MET THIS GROUP IN LOCUST ST PHILADELPHIA IN 1965 IN A GIG THEY WERE PLAYING IN THEY WERE QUITE SURPRISED TO HERE A GLASGOW ACCENT IN THOSE DAYS PEOPLE DID NOT TRAVEL AS MUCH U COULD NOT JUMP ON A PLANE LIKE IT IS TODAY, BUT THE SHIP I WAS ON TRAVELLED EVERY WERE .
They're really as good as The Stones as magical in their sound but maybe lack a little dimension not in the guitar though, the main guitarist is a genius!
It's crap that these guys never really made it into the " bigtime ", they were really good for their era, especially when you think of some of the groups that did make it.
hi george its jane the wee lassie you waved to in hospital all those years ago i have moved back to scotland from manchester are u doin any gigs in scotland in the near future please let me know tc lov jane x
was a great gig.best gig i've seen in a while.you did an amazing cover of the elevators.i've seen a few and not many bands can pull it off. i hear you might be doin a set of elevators tunes at this scramash thingy? i hope so man. i have a band myself that does original stuff inspired by elevators, human expression type stuff.
So sorry to hear about Hume Paton. I was a huge Poets fan in my teens and used to travel all around Scotland with my friend, Linda, to see them perform.
My first guitar tutor was in this band - he's on acoustic on the left (the platform on our right) - must point out though, that I was his pupil MANY YEARS after this vid :)
My first guitar tutor was in this band - he's on acoustic on the left (our right) - must point out though, that I was his pupil MANY YEARS after this vid :)
Good to see a lot of love on this page.... I found The Poets when I was in high school, digging the whole garage/beat thing before it became in fashion for my generation. In my 20s now it's crazy to be able to see footage of a group I idolized and knew so little about. After those years in the crates and living lameass adult life now I gotta say this is one of the few I keep coming back to. Check out Thor's Hammer from Iceland and also The Outsiders from the Netherlands. My top picks!!!!
@smeecurry Hi I believe George is an English teacher in the Glasgow area, or was until recently. He comments on here now and then under the name " poetnumerouno " you could have a look at his page.
They never did break into the American market, but I recall this song on Shindig when they performed it.
I recently purchased a CD from Scotland of their greatest hits which contained Now We're Thru, and as I understand it, they were the Scottish Beatles over there, but I don't think they ever had a release here in America at the record stores.
I knew the lovely Geoge Gallacher in the 60's when he lived in Kilburn in London. Major Minor records would ring a bell with him. He is a very nice person. We were great friends, George you must remember Issy!!!!Hope all is well with you.
i used to go to a dance hall called the flamingo in glasgow in the early 1960s and was lucky enough to see and hear these guys nearly every week. lots of great music i n glasgow at that time.
ah never got stabbed, but ah got hit wi a chair in the locarno and sconed wi a beer can ootside the marquee. the auld times are gone forever. music and burds were great though
if they had have released "i love her still" as a single, i reckon they could have blasted their way to the top. - probably not, but i really wished they did
Great stuff. I vaguely remember seeing the group at Glasgow's Dennistoun Palais - the again old age might mean my mind is playing tricks; can anyone confirm if the group played there?
They played Glasgow Uni Union. Saw Them there quite often but still think Hi-Fi Combo were the "Greatest Scottish Band", even better than the Beatstalkers!!!!! But I'm biased! Great to see them again. Thanks for posting.
Yes, Pathfinders were a good (very good) band but still think Hi Fi Combo had it. That said, their brand of music was different so possibly a like comparison is not justified. Agreed Glasgow was a great place for music, fashion and parties in the day. Knew the Flamingo well!!!! Barrowland, Electric Garden. Yes, a great place to be!!!!!
good, loved the B side of this record, still remember the title 'there are some'. How many records hit the top thirty. Talking to Sandy of Marmalade last week in Belamadena, who told me he was surprised i had the record (im sure i had two of theirs), and i didnt know they were scottish Linda from Blackpool, eng.
Thanks for this. One of the first records i ever bought.Sadly i misplaced it but i have saved this video in my favourites. Thanks again and keep finding this stuff. We think it 'mazing.
I met and interviewed George G. back in 1991 at his home. That interview appeared on some zines at that time. He told me when they toured england with the Pretty things in a small van and when they lived in a London hotel with Little Walter and Van Morrison. Great sound. I have this 7". Lenny H. of the Thanes gave me a copy of this
Totally Brilliant. I had only ever heard the music of The Poets before, to see them in action is a real treat! I would love to get some of their stuff for my iPod.
Jeez came across this by accident, the Poets Flamingo, nuff said brilliant.Myself ex House of Lords bassist still playing. Living up in Aberdeen for the last 26 years, picked up the 'Blues Poets' cd for 99p in Inverurie a couple of years back...brilliant.
Down in Glasgow much more these days. 40 year reunion recently with one of the old bands down in Billy Sampson's studio. You still playing George ...rumour was the Scotia....bring on the old Glasgow bands 11
good you're still playing --- yeah playing with guys from del amitri and the river detectives --- country blues, dylan, woody guthrie etc --- nice band --- george
No probably that was Alan Fullager or Lenny whats his name from the Trinkets I think that followed me after I went to London.I was probably HofL 3rd version with Rab Munro (vox) Neil Moir (sax) etc.....where is Munro now?
This was a wicked track and should have hit the top 10. So should another great single of theirs : "I Am So Blue" from around 1965. If anybody out there could download this one too, it would be very much appreciated. Cheers.
@ poetnumerouno, George: As a high school girl in Adelaide (South Australia) in the mid-60's, i can only remember one Poets track being released here, called "I Am So Blue". To me, it was so haunting and unusual and i loved it but haven't been able to find it again since ;-(
A huge THANK YOU to beyondthebeat for posting Poets that i've never heard before - their sound is still beautiful and unique!
hi thank you for posting the poets i was 12 years old when there van was in a crash frazer watson was in the same hospital as me i had been hit by a car he used to wave over to me every morning and last thing at night the porter took me over to meet him when the band came to visit him they all would wave to me when i saw this video i cried if any of you are out there what it would mean to me to here from u would mean the world to me jane
hi george thank u for replying yes i got well quickly. but what a buzz it was to see them again on u tube i veiw it almost every day i have showed the video to my kids and grandkids are u a member of the band or a fan jane
hi george W.O.W. u blew me away with that one. and what a handsome dude u are.are u still in the bussiness. or have hung up ur hat do u remember visiting the hospital it is all so clear in my head of course what has happened to frazer watson thank u for repling u have made one lady so happy jane
This song is an absolute classic, very much ahead of it's time, they sound more like an indie band of 80's,makes Beatles recordings of 64 sound old hat,I still can't believe that they were filmed.
Thanks beyondthebeat! I have the original 45 and searched Youtube for this video without success at the end of 2007, so I posted my video, just made up of still pictures.
I haven't seen them perform for 40+ years - thanks again.
Absolutely amazing video! This band was truly versatile. I've been trying for years to find 'Fun Buggy' by the same band from 1969. An underground FUNK classic. And what about their version of Marvin Gaye's 'Baby Don't You Do It'from 1966 complete with a 2 minute funky drum break! These boys were funking it up WELL BEFORE their Scottish brothers, The Average White Band!
This is one of the most explosive records of the British Beat era and should have easily been top 10! This was played on Juke Box Jury and one of the guests, John Lennon, said it one of the most different pieces he ever heard. I didn't think any clips of the Poets performing survived, and I "thank my lucky stars" (sorry, couldn't resist) that this one is very much alive and well. Thank you for posting.
WOW - so good to see this again. I was the one on the far left trying to look cool!!!.. Not sure about the others - sadly John has left us and joined the big group in the sky. I am currently in Spain but return to UK regularly. Still playing and writing. Wonderful days and mega thanks for posting this . . .

hi go back to 1965 if u can i was the little girl u used to wave to when u visited frazer watson in hospital what a memo that was i loved u all then and still do u were the best jane
god I never thought I would see the poets again takes me back to my young days in glasgow I used to watch them also the beatstalkers, blues council dean ford and the gaylords(marmalade) johnny and the copycats etc etc great days
Waaarggh I cannot thank you enough for posting this. I've been waiting aeons to see what they were like on TV. Man this is utterly monumental, hope the guys have watched it too. Now We're Thru shoulda been Top 10. A classic piece of film from one of the best groups ever!!! You have made my day, again, beyondthebeat. Cheers and here's to more genuine SURPRISES. Lenny, a too young to have been there at the time Poets freak, Thanesville, Scotland
What does the introducer mean when he says the song sounds "just a little weird"? Does he mean "amazing" and "better than 95% of the other crap on his show"? If so, I agree.

One of the first Psychedelic bands!! If you ever hear their singles, it's so hard to believe they were from 1965 and early 1966

I was directed to this track by an old school friend I met again through Friends Reunited.
This brings back so many memories. I played in a group from Glasgow called the Axents.
We played with the Poets at Balloch one night and had a great time. great music and great guys.
Long live the sixties...
