That a great game this was. It was full of little nuances and complexities years ahead of its time. Brilliant! ...shame about the dodgy rythmical and melodic wobbles in the front end, but we can't have everything eh. This game was a real charmer.
@iwanttheoldroblox Err, no. We had this as kids too, but even at that age we knew this was rubbish. It's a classic only in its badness, but we did get entertainment out of it!
your mobiles are more powerful computers, what the fck do you expect from 1984, 3D interactive non-aliasing with patrick stewart voice over? dickheads
What an utterly shit game that was. The music could have at least been in tune and in time! Thanks for reminding me of this festering turd of a game! ;-)
Easily my most played game on the Spectrum at the time. Was/am a massive GB fan and spent many an hour playing this on my ZX with a mug of hot milk. Many thanks for the upload.
(would have been cool if you'd included the load as well :-P)
I just re-listened to the episode where they played this, and I couldn't stop laughing. It just sounds so ridiculous. Also, it gets stuck in my head for hours at at time.
.. in case you care, you were having difficulty catching ghosts for two reasons. 1: place your ghostbusters and trap as high up on the screen as possible. 2) When you get the ghost on a stream, move towards the trap and fire off while herding. You can't cross the proton streams, but cutting the trap's arc with a stream doesn't hurt anything.
Once you learn to catch ghosts, you'll do a lot better. Buy a vacuum also. it lets you suck down the guys meet on the road. More time to get money.
The worst thing about this awful game is getting back to fucking GHQ. You just have to keep moving around near the GHQ building and pressing 'z' or whatever, only to find out after another thrilling car journey that you 'chose' to go to the vacant building opposite. Oh, ActiVision didn't bother to tell us that 'b' drops bait lol, it's not mentioned anywhere!
I don't know what it was with Activision. Got some of the biggest movie tie-ins and managed to make a dog's dinner of them. This and Predator are prime examples.
The speccy was not known in the USA due to import restrictions and banning competition because of the C64 market. Some US guys are into the speccy but maybe they are ex-pats.
The voice clip at the title screen of this version is HORRIBLE!!! IT MAKES THE NES VERSION'S VOICE CLIP SOUND AWESOME!!! AND THAT VOICE CLIP WAS HORRIBLE ALSO!!!
To catch the ghosts, you maneuver your two fellows so that the ghost is trapped and jiggling above the trap, then activate the trap so that the trophy shaped thing hits it.
As for the door thing, on the Spectrum version, the game ends after you bypass the marshmallow man. On different platforms, there's a scene where you walk through the building avoiding things. Check the NES version videos on youtube! :)
lol i remember my mate having the dizzy box set and being so jealous. And then he didnt believe me when I had dizzy 3.5 that came with CRASH magazine.
By the way - Did the game just end when you got through past the marshmellow man. My mate reckoned that you went up the stairs after this and were on the rooftop...
My grandad god bless him had loads of old crash magazines and i loved them to bits. I got bought the oliver frey art book (he did most of the painted crash covers) for xmas last year. Best pressi ever! Not having much cash i had to take my xmas money down the markets and pick up some &3.00 speccy games. Salamander was one of the first games i bought there 'sighs while thinking off the past'. Good stuff
True. All my mates had spectrums and we all used to go to each other houses and swap games and show our gaming skills. I remember when my mate got the special dizzy box set with 5 dizzy games on it, we all went mental! Good times.
Yeah! The Dizzy box collections where great. Something to keep you going over Christmas and into the New Year. Then wait until the January Crash magazine came out to see the next batch of new games coming to the shops.
not a bad game but if you had any mates with C64's they would ridicule the phlidy "ghostbusters" synth voice compared the quite clear version on the commodore 64...
Heh. The Commodore's sales slaughtered the Speccy's. I'd say that means the Commy was more popular.
Go and play the C version of this game. Save for one of the voices (Ghostbusters!) everything looks and sounds better on the commodore, plays faster and smoother.
The 2600 version of Ghostbusters is smoother then the speccy's offering.
That's only because the C64 was made for the the American market. On a percentage of population against sales the speccy version has a higher average. Sorry dude!
The problem i had was that i could never figure out if i was trapping the ghosts correctly or not as im not sure if your meant to get them exactly in your beam or if you kinda just herd them near the trap like cattle. To be honest i still have no bloody idea but i aint gunna let it get me down!!
Im a big ghostbusters fan and remember playing this. The graphics are pretty bad thou i do like yhe fact ecto 1 takes up all the screen. I remember it been hard to trap the ghosts when i played and slimer seemed to give you a bit of hassle to!
Played this for hours back in the days but could never really get anywhere with it. Trapping the ghosts is quite tough. Usually ended up getting squashed by a big marshmallow man...lol!

The C64 was a better games machine, I had the Spectrum and it was far more flexible and it taught me to program. C64 BASIC was complete trash.
For me the Spectrum was the better all round machine.
I feel like im back at school now! The amount of arguments we had about which was better;-)
