In 1812 there was no country "Canada". Present day Toronto was the town of York. Upper & Lower "Canada" & a lot of other colonies made up "British North America", as such the residents of the time here would be "British Subjects".
Confused about your comment. In 1812 the other places of today's United Kingdom also answered to King George. They too would have been "British Subjects".
