The producer of this documentary seems and the interviewee seem to not understand patents. Patents cover the commercial production of things that have been manufactured. The seeds in question are either genetically modified in a lab or genetically modified naturally by finding a plant in the crops that naturally grows more or survives better and planting the seeds from that plant. Genetic and naturally modified seeds can be patented because the applicant for the patent has modified the seeds
The local coop here is selling land plots for community gardens, providing seeds, tilling of soil and direction and when you are done you can sell your extras at their farmer's market for a profit.
Also they are going to have greenhouses to sell and grow food year round and also prevent cross pollinating with gmo crops. I thought this was pretty ingenuous.
It would be nice if every community would cooperatively start something like this.

I live off the government, I am poor and a single mother. I raise 4 kids, the government gives me WIC and food stamps, I am not able to purchase food locally. I know tons of folks in my community growing round up ready corn and soy... selling their corn at Farmers Markets. Is the round up ready corn that Monsanto produces all the same variety? After University, I was very left wing, very liberal. I did a business case for growing 10 acres of sweet corn in South Western Ontario, and decided it could be profitable. I made the decision not to use any spray. I simply cultivated the weeds... I advertised my corn as being spray free.
I stagger started my crop to get about 4-5 weeks of harvesting time. After week 2 my crop became invested with bugs.
Do you think people don't buy sprayed corn? No, they don't buy bug free corn.

@ustanok totally agree but i think it really starts more with the US gov, making it illegal to stunt seed diversity, removing the ability of Monsanto and others to infiltrate or bribe the FDA, removing pesticides, improving label data, taking away the cash crop benefits from Gov, all these things have lead to our foods loss of quality. The beginning of this video is so backwards. 95% of Americans used to be farmers because agriculture was so inefficient, wasteful, polluting, and backbreaking that in order to merely survive most people had to farm.
Those jobs were destroyed and replaced by technological progress. Art, science, and culture blossoms when people start to have more free time because they don't have to farm 20 hours a day anymore.
How did they pollute in the past when they used animal manure for fertilizer, no pesticides, and no farm machinery?

I know a lot of peoples reactions to this is to "BUY LOCAL!!!" but... have you ever thought that your own community is buying round up ready or gmo seeds to grow your local food, too? I know tons of folks in my community growing round up ready corn and soy... selling their corn at Farmers Markets. Is the round up ready corn that Monsanto produces all the same variety? Like cattle corn? Do they grow sweet corn or peaches and cream corn, too?

After University, I was very left wing, very liberal. I did a business case for growing 10 acres of sweet corn in South Western Ontario, and decided it could be profitable. I made the decision not to use any spray. I simply cultivated the weeds... I advertised my corn as being spray free.
I stagger started my crop to get about 4-5 weeks of harvesting time. After week 2 my crop became invested with bugs.
Do you think people don't buy sprayed corn? No, they don't buy bug free corn.

we've become oil farmers.all our food depends on oil for tractors, for fertilizers, for pestisides and for transportation.once we stop using oil, productivity will be much lower, so the harvest will be less which leads to food crisis and population reduction.
we'll have to eventually stop using oil because oil will eventually run out.
unless they find new methods to make fertilizers, pesticides and new transportation withoug using oil, there will be major food crises and population reductions.

The beginning of this video is so backwards. 95% of Americans used to be farmers because agriculture was so inefficient, wasteful, polluting, and backbreaking that in order to merely survive most people had to farm.
Those jobs were destroyed and replaced by technological progress. Art, science, and culture blossoms when people start to have more free time because they don't have to farm 20 hours a day anymore.

Take the evolution of transportation, primitive humans made do with horses, but now we happily use far better and cheaper (relative to income) cars - of course there's the issue of car safety and pollution, and that must be worked on, but it's not a reason to not use cars at all.

Monsanto's New Leaf potato and monsanto's BT corn are legally registered as pesticides, yet most americans are consuming this poison, unaware, because the FDA refuses to label GMO's. Former monsanto vice president Michael Taylor was named senior advisor to the FDA by Obama. So those who thought Obama was change have got to be sadly disappointed.
Consumers need to demand all GMO's be labelled, even if monsanto is deadset against it.

There's about ten corporations* that want to carve up the global food ,pharmaceutical & pesticides markets aided and abetted by parts of the United Nations umbrella on food safety the 'Codex Alimentarius' via the WTO/FDA/FOA...* monsanto,eli lilly, dupont, bayer, pioneer seed, sygenta, etc many orignated in/around post war Germany, Switzld and US.

Legalize cannabis hemp (every strain) and help the worlds people grow it to satisfy needs for food, medicine, materials and energy. Enforce detailed labeling(fertilizers, pesticides, GM etc) of food so people can decide what they eat.

Solution is simple - expressly prohibit patent of any organic product (and dismantle the patents already awarded - citing threat to Earth's biodiversity.)
Even compensate biotech companies for ant monies already invested (but NOT for lost revenues which were never morally justified anyway) and that should be the end of it.

Monsanto is not some crazy boogyman company. They do want to produce a product that they can market.. who doesn't. BT based plants are not a big deal. If roundup is as bad as DDT, then we have a problem, but it is not.

Wrong. Monsanto wants to own the market, so they don't have to market a product because they have the only available product.

No need for it as HFCS does just that.
Unlike sucrose the fructose and glucose in corn syrup does not trigger a satiation response ie you stay hungry.

CHEMRISK - a research company hired by the Corn Refiners Association has recently taken down it's YouTube channel.
The removal was in response to negative public perception resulting from the discovery of dangerous levels of MERCURY in HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. Apparently it has become a liability to defend the sweetener.

The food that you fuel you body with ( the physical, which you seem to presume is the entirety of life) is being tampered with in such a way as to remove either your whole life...or your mental capacity and physical dexterity with which you might otherwise be enjoying it. So, as you can imagine, people refusing to have this blasphemous circus continue any longer is, in fact, 'getting' their life back into the responsibility of themselves.
