  • My two favorite guitarists. There's just winning all over.

  • Ibanez player vs Ibanez player

  • Vai won.

  • Speed does not make the guitarist "better" than the other. In fact, I can't even compare these two, if speed is what you're going for, then Gilbert wins. But speed in music is only 1/100th of what matters about the damn song.

Vai and Gilbert are top notch. Incomparable with each other, along with Satch, Petrucci, Govan, and Malmsteen. They're the best of the best, and only separated by how they put the feeling into the sounds the put out. They way that the song is played. It's just impossible.

  • @TheSublimeIbanez

Yngwie Malmsteen SUCKS Big Time compared to Paul Gilbert John Petrucci & Guthrie Govan

All that Yngwie Malsteen does since 1982 is playing Johann Sebastian Bach at 3 x the Speed

The Other Guys i mentioned have Great Tone, Great Feeling, the Are Great Composers

and they can Play different Styles of Music Yngwie can only play Neo Classical Metal

    Hes extremely OVERRATED

  • @musicisthebestF I personally hate him, just added him so people don't whine

  • @TheSublimeIbanez

Oh okay most people whine IF you say Slash and Eddie Van Halen are overrated XD

Eddie Van Halen was cool he s a Hero for Paul Gilbert & Dweezil Zappa

please check out my Favorite Guitarists Andy Timmons, Kiko Loureiro and Mattias Eklundh

You might like them they are as good as Petrucci & Satriani

  • The genius who made this video, with Steve Vai now and Paul Gilbert then, twenty years ago is an i diot! nmakje a comparisin now, my spelling is wrong!

  • @fredrikp3 your dates are wrong as well as your spelling. That second solo from Vai was on the G3 tour in 1996, 15 years ago.

  • @fredrikp3

    1. Paul Gilbert played that Solo in 1988 and Steve Vai played that Solo in 1996

    Thats 8 years NOT 20

Besides That did you ever get the idea that the Guy who made this video just doesnt Like Paul Gilbert for Whatever reason

  • two different tastes for melody (if we can say that paul has any)but there's something that has been said steve vai uses a sound much more overdriven than gilbert which makes shredding more easy, needing less precision and articulation, this is a fact and it's very notable in every gilbert's performance: U hear all. SV uses A LOT more effects and tricks like fernandes pick ups, digitech whammy and a huge amount of whammy bar (which a like); So yes, from a pure shredding perspective PG wins.

  • gilbert shreds faster and harder, and pumps up more vibe. and steve vai has more soul into it. its a close match and dont get me wrong, paul gilberts definatley in my top 5, but in my opinion, vai takes this one.

  • a duel indeed, but no best. two once mortal beings who exceed mortality no longer fall into categories of skill level, for they are the definitions of skill.

  • He's not my favorite, but the best I've ever seen.

  • tohpati win...

  • Paul FTW!

  • Both guitarists can execute anything possible on the guitar. When you get to that point it's not about "who's best" but "who do prefer".

  • Vai win

  • Les 2 sont incroyables ! Mais je vote pour Paul Gilbert parce que Steve Vaï à un ego monstrueux..

  • PAUL GILBERT WINS

  • Both are amazing! Steve Vai was born to play...just look at the guys fingers! :)

  • Steve vai sem duvida

  • both amazing and influences of mine...gilberts downfall is that hes very repetitive ...but still probably the coolest guitar player alive

  • wow!!!

  • steve vai rulez!!!!

  • paul

  • There is no 1 greatest guitar player how can you argue about whos better between these guys, jimi hendrix, clapton, van halen, krik hammett, dave mustaine, synister gates, dan donnegan, jimmy page, the dude from whitesnake and chuck berry. In general they all have theyre "own" genre. thats just my opinion.

  • @CKSeeps7 I think you mean the dudes from Whitesnake: Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach.

  • @IxMAKExUxGOxLOL ya haha theyre really good.

  • @CKSeeps7 Damn straight :P

  • paul gilber lejossssssssssssssssssssssss .....

  • Vai has quite the ego and seems pretty full of himself, yet, the level of skill he possesses allows him to be. Paul has some of the best technique around, is a great teacher, and seems very humble. Both gifted and unforgettable guitarists.

  • Throw in Steve Vai live video of "For the Love of God" and cd video for "Tender Surrender" and you will be on your knees along with Paul Gilbert. There is no structure in Paul's songs or solos. Steve actually tells stories with his songs and solos. There is definately a LARGE gap on this difference.

  • well, Paul is awesome on his "patented lagato scale" BUT get old after awhile, he needs to cover more on the fret board a'la Eric Johnson & Steve Vai. Yes NO ONE touches Paul at shredding but NO ONE touches Steve Vai at versatility EXCEPT for Eric Johnson. Sooo, thumbs up would have to go to Steve Vai for fret coverage and style and Paul for pure-Shred!

All three are my favorites by the way..

  • Vai is crazy guitar man, Paul is a dude, simple.

  • poll that is similar to this one: what to do you like more? food or drink? you guys are so stupid arguing about who is better when music is all about taste and who likes what more. music is not a competition. can you realise that already? it's the 21st century, for christ sake. just because you like PG more than SV doesn't mean he's better and vice versa.

  • paul gilbert is best

  • In my opinion Paul is definitely faster for sure, but I think Steve plays with more originality and feel. I just think Steve has a bit more "zest" and appeal to his playing. They are both completely awesome, just different styles really. I think it would be more appropriate to compare Gilbert to Kotzen. We could compare many great players to one another all day long. Stevie Ray with Hendrix; Shawn Lane with Guthrie Govan, Clapton with Page, etc. But no one compares to Tommy Emmanuel. (Imho)

  • Those 2 top comments proved that the world is fair enough !!!

  • Paul always! Vai is a Douche.

  • No if you play guitar at all then you know that Paul Gilbert is virtually unbeatable period..

  • @kenroy916 So why is it easier to learn a Gilbert song compared with a Vai song?

  • it depends on the song but if you want a bigger challenge try learning some Guthrie Govan

  • If by better you mean fastest then its Paul Gilbert. If my better you mean more talented then its Steve Vai

  • PAUL STILL OK

  • WOW..JUST TO FAST .

  • PAUL GILBERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • steve vai. sure gilbert has great speed, but vai's music is beautiful and it makes you feel amazing.

  • Beating off does not a song make.

  • he picked out the fastest and greatest of gilbert.. but not what vai CAN do xD

    i say vai!

  • jeezus man that was tedious, gimme seasick steve and his guitar with 3 strings anyday over that shite

  • OK! I have the answer for who is BETTER! ITS ITS... well technically speaking, Paul Gilbert is better because Steve Vai is Better than Paul because Paul is better than Steve, which is why Steve and Paul are better than Gilbert. wait.. who the fuck is Gilbert?! Gilbert who??? how did he get in this show??!

  • Both are amazing guitar players in different ways and the music world is a richer for both of them. I've had the good fortune to meet them both backstage on 'meet and greets' and would also add that both of them are as genuine and personable as its possible to be. Both are true stars on and off the stage.

  • vai is a bit more interesting. the other guy is just neo classical, arpeggio sweeping muscle memory bull shit.

  • Versus? Best?

The best Vai is Steve and the best Gilbert is Paul ...

    It's ART, damn it!

  • Like them both, Don't care who's "best"

  • style:

    paul>steve

    technique:

    steve>paul

    style>technique

    paul won in my opinion

  • @ToterAlterMann666 I think paul's teqnique is a bit better (especially the vai-brato) .But you can't really compare their styles. They are too different, even their personalities don't match at all. Both of them have unique styles though and you got to hand it to the boys with the long fingers...Both of them sure are unique in whatever it is that they do...

  • @mhtsos12 yes, i cant compare them but i can say who´s better in my Opinion.

Style isnt skill....so its still purely a matter of taste ^^

i like both because they play amazing ^^

  • @ToterAlterMann666 As far as I'm concerned you can compare whatever you want if you want to.I'm just saying i would compare many stuff but wouldn't bother comparing their styles. The stuff they're playing only have speed in common, they may sound similar but that's pretty far from the truth imo.

  • @ToterAlterMann666 Btw the gilbert part he put in the video sucks balls...Wtf there are many much better gilbert videos out there...

  • Vai is much more musical.

  • Gilbert is by far a much cleaner & faster player and in technical aspects Crushes Vai. I do have to say Vai style is mature and very well thought out in his musical composition. There both great and yet very different, it's a matter of opinion.

  • Man Man Mantabbbbhahahayyy

  • Vai has the superior tone, but Gilbert is more my style. I'd kill to have either one of their skills.... or both of them combined!

  • personally i got to go with Vai, but it's just a question of style i guess. Both are great guitarists.

  • Look daddy...without hands....soooostupid... like batman against Superman.. Soooo childish these vid's

  • No, I'm a norwegian... :S

  • Dweedle, dweedle, dweedle,dweedle..... High level playing yes, appealing - Hmm!

  • I gotta go with Vai! Love his tone and playing style! PG is just a little too much shredding for me.

  • And the winners are STEVE VAI and PAUL GILBERT!!!!!!!

  • eruption ?! wtf

  • They're both great artists who have completely different styles. There's no way you can crown one or the other a winner. They're both great

  • @bennyboi56 But why? They are just as fast, but Vai plays so muck better than Paul. But what ever, we all have our different meanings! ;)

  • @havjac95 its "opinion" not "meaning", are you german :p?

  • Not really a good comparison video is it, you have Vai playing a nice piece and Gilbert just playing some solo stuff, why no put Gilbert playing I cannot tell a lie.

  • Vai is way better!!

  • @havjac95 well you obviously havent heard much of paul gilberts music because then you would know steve vai is a n00b comapared to paul gilbert

  • both very different players both f*cking incredible players \m/

  • I go 4 Paul,he'z technically a maestro..S.Vai is v.creative though!

  • paul gilbert is the best!!!1

  • Vai's a helluva virtuoso, composer, performer and guitarist, but I give it to Paul. Dude's a monster.

  • your all stupid lol.. you cant compare guitarists.. they are all unique in their own way.. they have their own styles and technique so lay off noobs..

  • I love both alot, but i'd give paul gilbert my cake....

Ok, did that sound wrong? haha

  • @mitchellvanvliet Nope, it sounded awesome lol

  • Go to hell paul gilbert.... >.<

  • Search "Fastest Guitar Sweeps in the World" for some real talent

  • i really dig PG but in some clips he has such poor sound. By that i don't mean his playing itself, his picking attack and tone production are insanely good ofcourse. I mean his equipment and settings though: too much and ugly delay, horrible distortion, just an overall ugly sound. Such a shame

  • Vai has a soul. Gilbert was for me always pure shredding....

  • Both great players, but Steve has the disadvantage of being an earthling.

  • Vai,s deep knowledge of music just beats pauls magical right hand.

  • Paul's pinky wins

  • I like Paul.

  • first song by Vai?

  • @popalltheway Lotus Feet

  • i literally forgot to breathe!

  • i mean i understand that vai puts more feeling into his music but if paul tried to put feel on his music hed probably break his neck.....

  • technically, gilbert wins. but vai puts waaaaay more emotion is his music!

  • The one with te most thumbs is the real winner, so thumbs up for your favorite

  • AND THE WINNER IS.....STEVE VAI!!!!! (thumbs if you agree)

  • @DeepFrozenSalmon I don't have to compare thumbs ups to know vai is better

  • @DeepFrozenSalmon MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA PAUL FOR EVER!!!!!

  • AND THE WINNER IS.....PAUL GILBERT!!!!! (thumbs if you agree)

  • dont compare... be glad you can hear them both in your poor lives :D

  • I know it, gilbert knows it and u should be able too hear it!!

Steve Vai has taken it to a level way beyond what anyone has done uptill now!

    Ask gilbert, he'll tell u

  • stop comparing these two

  • They are both incredible. In my mind you can't split them on talent, but I prefer Paul's music, can't really explain why.

  • Give me any other two guitar players and ill answer! This was clearly an attempt to overload my brain +.+

  • too close to call but I know who the losers are: the rest of us who will never...EVER... play that good lol

  • weak

  • Paul Gilbert!!!

  • yeah

    i go with steve vai

  • Steve = Elegance and fluency

    Gilbert = Agresiveness

I would say the best of both worlds!

  • Yeah!!!!

  • CANT COMPARE, DIFFERENT STYLES.

  • It's been all done before, playing a guitar is not HARD.

  • @spitfacedrip Thats like saying surgury isn't hard. Sure, its piss easy if you just wanna cut someone open, but try surgury on your cat without alot of practice and tallent and you will have one not living cat... I guess what I'm saying is fuck you.

  • @mikkelthansen Haha alright then whatever you say crazy man

  • their fingers are longer then my forearm.. they're fast, ok, but they also can hit notes on frets miles far from each others.. fuckin' aliens!

  • why the fuck does that Jacqueline bitch keep popping up with these great guitarists???

  • I listened to a Steve Vai cd earlier today. Then immediately after I listened to a Paul Gilbert cd. I've listened to both guitarists for the past ten years of my life and I have come to a decision. The winner is... both. Because if they were playing the same things, neither would be masters. And they are both masters.

  • hes great at moving his hand around now Gilbert need to make a song out of the gibberish hes spiting out...... Steve can do that faster.... An make it sound cleaner..... but he doesn't cause it sounds like a bunch of noise...

  • jeff loomis wins any way

  • 6:21, now that's a capo!

  • 1 more technical, 1 other more experimental, both a joy to listen too. I think you which of them I am talking about.

  • Vai's makes his playing unique regardless as to whether it sounds good or not, whereas Gilbert just plays to sound fucking good. His playing is unique because he does it better than anyone else.

  • @rockandbloodyroll fuck ya!

  • All Steve Vai music sounds like the songs at the start of Pokemon Movies

  • What´s the very first song called that Steve Vai plays with the orchestra? The melody that starts around 1:00 is pretty amazing.

  • Gilbert wins technique right and left hand easy his chops are fatr better and he has more feel steve via is very creative but he fakes a lot of the feel people think they hear he just messes with a lot of vibrato

  • @rocker100991 But Via's left hand is much better technically. If you look at Paul's left hand close up, you can see clearly that he uses the flats of his fingers, which is less technically correct then Steve, who play's with his tips.

  • @mrnobodyouknow possibly however pauls left hand is still faster and he keeps his fingers closer to the strings witch is more technicaly correct via puts some distance between his fingers and the string when he pulls up so the next he hits a not he hits it with force

  • @rocker100991 But Steve Vai is using the distance between the string for an advantage that Paul then doesn't have. And you don't really know if Steve can't play as fast or he isn't. I love both of their music, but Steve's left hand is better technically then Pauls.

  • @mrnobodyouknow paul is significently faster via admits that he only works on his strengths and does not work on his weeknesses speed is not one of his top strengths he only goes as fast as he needs to for his music but if he needed to he could not go faster

  • Aren't they both great guitarist why does there need to be some type of competition between them steve very good and so is paul.

  • Buckethead

  • Gilbert damn it..:)

  • I hate people who are like, "there both from totally different genres, and playing styles you can't compare them". I can see with playing styles, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, Steve vai is better. When i watch paul play, he uses very simplistic scales. As for Steve vai, he has so many different approaches and scales that i feel that Paul wouldn't have a chance.

  • @The12daughertye Then again, Paul Gilbert fucking slaughters Vai with his right hand technique as well as his string skipping arpeggios. Don't get me wrong, they're both great, and I feel that they're both at a stage where you can't really compare them, but...Paul Gilbert wins when it comes to right handed techniques and arpeggios.

  • steve vai: more feeling

paul gilbert: more fast and more scales

    TRUE METAL NEVER DIEEEES!!

  • Comment removed

  • paul gilbert!!!!!!!!

  • paul is the pinky king

  • @freddyfamous I don't agree. Paul Gilbert has both skills way high than Vai but Vai has passion, beauty, freedom. I listen to Paul pretty much but when I'm stressed for me it's better to listen to Steve

  • STEVE VAI >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Paul Gilbert

    FACT

  • @freddyfamous and @mrpignati are both my accounts

  • @almightyad what i meant: in my opinion vai has the better left hand skills (like hammer-ons, pulls, tappings and sweapings). He gets most of his speed by the work of his outstanding left hand. Gilberts outstanding feature is his punctuality and the speed of his right (picking) hand. I dont say gilbert is slower or so. I love both of them (sorry for my english).

  • THIS IS A JOKE RIGHT? STEVE VAI? WHO? PAUL GILBERT IS THE MASTER

  • both are amazing guitarist.

  • i gotta pick gilbert, he has the diversity, him and vai have the same level of creativity, but paul dabbles in more styles, as far as i know, and i feel like gilbert has some techniques more down pat then vai, like string skipping, and alternate picking, while vai has some fairly complex songs.

  • not-the-best footage of paul... could have had scarified of the space ship live dvd and one of the following songs: Hurry Up, Silent Followed by a Deafening Roar, Eudaimonia Overture, Norwegian Cowbell, Bultaco Saturno, Paul Vs. Godzilla or Fuzz Universe...

  • I'm sure they never think about competing with each other. I have read that Vai heard about Gilbert back in the day, and decided he better check Gilbert out. I've never hear anyone else string skip like Gilbert. I think, when it comes to technical prowess, Gilbert is the man. Both are incredible, but when you hear Paul's intro solo on his video "Intense Rock Sequences and Techniques"...How could he not be your favorite guitarist of all time??!!!

  • I would have to say tone wise, Vai wins...but for calrity and speed and just pure awesome, gilbert wins in my book...that's just me

  • @JustinTCB tone? check out gilbert's solo instrumental albums... come back later with your observations on it.... no pun intended, just interested if u change opinion

  • Comment removed

  • you know you're a jackass when you hire an orchestra to play behind you.... paul wins

  • @SOCOM018 what exactly is wrong about having an orchestra to back you up ?

  • I really don't like this Vs stuff. Vai and Gilbert are musicians. They make music, the question will always be: Do you like his sound? That is a question of feeling, and music is about this. In terms of technique, is absurd to compare them because they both domain the techniques for their music, so it is enough for them, period.

  • Vai FTW =)

  • Fucking amazing both are very good!! but I like more the Paul Gilbert's style!!

  • vai has more feel and more uniqueness. so he gets my vote.

  • that´s the key!!! all fucking, epic guitar player,...are playing white guitars !! these guitars are actually made by cloudes of heaven.

  • Bad choice of clips to compare. Both awesome. Gilbert has more chops and more knowledge though.

  • its just picking which god you believe in, personally im a Vai-ist and i believe Gilbert is the equivalent to jesus

  • hmm i think steve is playing technical tremolo, tapping, and etc and gilbert is good at picking technique

  • for me, gilbert is the "right hand king" and vai is the "left hand king" (guitarists know what I'm talking about)...
