  • I want one!

  • Tellya what Duane, if I ever win the lotto, will $50,000 buy that baby?

  • nice piece of John Deere there

  • an IH woulda started started on a 1/4 crank

  • you could probably dump crude oil into that thing and it would still run

  • gotta love it, when i was a kid both my brother and i together couldnt turn the fly wheel to start it even with the petcocks open....lol

i can see the OSHA guys on here hiding under the table watching that big open flywheel spinning around...LMAO

  • Man! they build those babies to last forever!

  • bad ass. green and yellow ftw!

  • wish my 42 GM would start that easily!

  • That old girl got some damn good compression!

  • That ol G can idle

  • Wow! That was easy!

  • Good Ol' Johnny Popper!!!

  • That can crack a smile anyday!!

  • The audio quality of this video earns it a 10!!!

  • about the sweetest sound you will ever hear out of a combustion engine! love that sound. I got a 51 model D and a 53 AR. my most prized possesions! lol

  • My dad grew up in Oklahoma and John Deere 2 cylinder tractors had the nickname of "Johnny Pops"

  • @P51ride

We called em ol Poppin Johns!

  • Nothin' runs like a Deere!

Wonderful sound and a great old machine.

  • Deere has actually been around about 162 years If I am not mistaken, I believe Deere was Established around 1847 but I could be wrong

  • 172 years. The company was established in 1837.

  • @JohnDeerePowered it was established in 1837 so it is past 100 years old

  • @JohnDeerePowered The company was founded in 1837 by John Deere, who developed and manufactured the first commercially successful cast-steel plow.

  • john deere has been around since 1812, thats when the made the first steel plow

  • What a wonderful sound :-)

  • Great soundin G

  • Did u see the grin on his face!

  • @DieselMechanic2008 You should see the grin on my face! I love that sound!

  • @DieselMechanic2008 It is always a good feeling when your tractor starts!haha

  • @DieselMechanic2008 Better than the look mine gets when it don't start!!!

  • I like that sound.

  • Sweet! Brings back the memories hearing the old John Deere!!

  • You have to do both cuz the tractor wont move if the compression let out of the petcock is let out while its on. you still have to push the choke in

  • ur a petcock

  • @dfaubl well technically the model G began production in 1937

  • John Deere introduced the G in May of 1937

  • @dfaubl your way off, the John Deere Model G was introduced in 1937 and after the tractor is running you are suppose to close the petcocks

  • @dfaubl the petcock is a compression relese to make it easier to hand crank start. You can hear the air (compression) leaking out during his first two pulls. Once the engine is going you want more compression so you close the petcock. Alot of old engines have this. You would still have to push the choke in once it has started.

  • whb1965. You try finding a way to start a tractor like itself in 1937

  • I love the unstyled. the open fly wheel. the crank starter. thats john deere i tell ya.

  • The claer sound is best

  • Like I said before "Electric starters are for babies". I love to hear her run REALLY slow.

  • how in the blue hell were you able to get so much compression on this tractor? xD

    anyways pretty cool.

  • Backfires are a bitch. Don't hold the flywheel too tight and when it pops let go! Trust my my D has backfired a few times on me.

  • there are 2 types of old JD's, what they call 'unstyled' like this one, & 'styled'.. the styled JDs added a more modern looking grill, dash, & later a more comfortable safety seat with a backrest; fenders were a rare option until the 30 series were developed. The models are A-B-D-H & G's, with G's having the most horsepower.. JD D's were more a field type tractor, the others were called row crop tractors, later they had narrow, wide front & hi-crop options for all models except the H model.

  • ive never drove a john deere 1936 to 80's tractor so umm will the wheel kick back at you if you don't do it right?

  • the bigger ones do sometimes.

as a Kid My dad rebuilt these beasts. im 17 now..

and i still remember everything about them...

  • an a isnt bigger than a g

  • sounds like popcorn popping.

  • That's why they were nicknamed "popping johnnies"

  • I thought they were called "Johnnie Poppers"

  • it's kind of like how some people call it "soda" some call it "pop"

in my area there always referd to as "popping johnnies"

  • we call them poppin johns here in alabama

  • Best way is park on a hill.

  • what does that thing run on fresh air lol jokin!!!:D Nice crank up lol well done!!:D

  • nice video!!

  • that tractor is a MODEL A

  • No, It's not an A!! Look at the frame just ahead of the valve cover. Ever see an unstyled A with the frame like that? Also, 3 cap screws holding the cover on the gov. bearing. The frame width had to be increased to clear the large block & head. This guy has a very nice unstyled G. Ever see an old A that hard to turn over? More like an old D!

  • wats the difference between a model A and a model B?

  • the A is a little bigger and has a little more horsepower

  • Need to do a little more research man. A model D is more like a G than an A.

  • Who cares its awesome!!

  • You guys live south of the Mason - Dixon line don't you.! Nice bunch of tractors guys!

  • I'd bet Mississippi or Alabama.

  • Nice sounding old G! Do you ever take to the field and give it a work out? Thanks for posting!

  • Ohh my goodness, this video is a lifesaver in the middle of winter. I love the sound of an old John Deere and now cannot wait for tractor pulling to start again.

-by the way I love the accents!

  • Love that sound

  • Cranking that was was safer than the old front hand crank. Neat video good sounding machine.

  • Alot safer

with ours, if you have it in gear and start it from the front

    you get ran over.

  • you cant start a tractor with it in gear... dont u have to have it in neutral?

  • In the old days, you needed to know what you were doing to stay alive. Old machinery was not idiot proof. If the tractor is in gear & the clutch was engaged & it starts on the first turn, you might get run over. After the first time, if you survive, you won't forget again. An A was 1/3d larger than a B & a G was larger than an A. These folks have a very nice collection of tractors

  • ya they do... we got a JD year2000 4300 and a 1980 JD 2550

  • @norfolkdash9 There is no safety switch to stop you from starting it in gear except it might be a little harder to crank and the tractor hopefully will start moving before it starts. Safety was your problem not John Deere's.

  • electric starters are for babies!

  • love the sound of this engine!

  • I love the sound on this video...thanks for filming it! John Deere made American what it is today.

  • i love that 2 cylinder sound

  • Good ol' johnny poppers forever!

  • Oh man I love it, god I love old tractors

  • Awesome!

  • The unstyled G's didn't have electric start, so far as I know. The later, styled G's did, first as an option and then, after 1947, as standard equipment. Nice looking Deere B in the background, btw.

  • Awesome! The idle reminds me of a Big camed Harley. IS that the only way you can start this tractor or is there also a gas or electric starter?

  • No gas or electric starter on this one.

  • @duanefern worse case .... i know with tractors with a crank, sometimes your last resort is startin it with the belt pully...but that flywheel is beter than a crank

  • @duanefern maybe some had electric start. The one my dad had never. This was the only way it started other than tow starting it!

  • @TheFarmerfitz My uncle bought a 1947 G brand new which is ten years newer that this one and he is 93 now and still has the G. It has an electric starter. You can see the flywheel turning and the outeredge of the flywheel, unlike this tractor, has teeth on it for the electric starter. Also a 1947 G has a ramped head and a little more horsepower and a 6 speed transmission. But it is a bit faster in low gear.

  • @CAC3414 there is one other option, pull starting, that is, if you have the use of another tractor.
