The description is very misleading. The pick-up did not collide with the minivan... it was the minivan which collided with the pick-up truck, when the driver of the van chose not to yield the right-of-way or obey traffic protocol whenever police sirens & lights are in the vicinity. So the minivan driver was more culpable in this tragedy than the alleged pick-up thief, and I for one hope (s)he lives with that guilt on his/her conscience for the rest of his/her life.

That is the same if it is like my province in canada. A person driving at excessive speed, while technically having the right of way can still be at fault if it is determined that the turning vehicle had sufficient room had the speeding car been instead going the speed limit.

The lady in the van would have been wrong if the guy in the truck wasn't himself breaking the law. The law is, when your hand are dirty, or you are doing something worng, your case get thrown out of court. This guy died and it never went to court.
