Hagler is one of the few black fighters who's boxing style I like. He boxes on his tip-toes but does use good footwork, rarely clinches or back pedaled. Good head movement and great jab. Antufermo mauling stlye is patetic. Duran used to do the same shit. Great Fighters like Hagler, Ricardo Lopez, Ruben Olivares, Willy Pep, and Sugar Ray Leonard (initially in his career) displayed awesome boxing technique
Even though Hagler got drawn into Vito's kind of fight in the latter part of the fight, clearly Hagler won the fight. winning at least 9 of the 15 rounds.
i watched hagler early in his career and he was in fact much more of a boxer. after this fight he never trusted the judges again( with good reason)and turned into a destroyer..
Its funny to hear him call vito a rough customer and hagler a boxer... how many kos does each fighter have again cosell:.. I wish ali had jumped over the ropes and finished cosell... but larry holmes cleaned up after ali again... (no disrespect to ali, he was about 3X the fighter larry was, I only meant that in terms of history)
@RapedByRepublicans Cosell described Hagler accurately. He said he was a skilled boxer "with dynamite in either hand." That's true -- the Hearns fight aside, Hagler was best as a counter-puncher. I think he called Antuofermo a rough customer because of his brawling, unpolished style.
Cosell was a great commentator, even though he could be a condescending prick. He knew what he was talking about.
@RapedByRepublicans Ali was 3X the fighter Larry Holmes was? hahah Get Real . Put both in the ring in their prime and you have a very close fight. Holmes had a much better jab and uppercut and good movement , Ali had great hand speed and foot speed . Power edge also goes to Holmes. After years of sparring with Ali , Holmes knew how to handle Ali.
Great fight! Vito may have just out-gunned Hagler in a strong finish. Should have been a draw maybe. The commentary was about 10 seconds out of sync with the video
This fight was NOT "controversial", nor a "robbery". Great fight, close fight and I thought Vito won it. Marvin did well in the first five rounds but faded after that. You have to give Vito credit for slowing him down. Marvin was a great champion but also a crybaby whenever he lost. Hagler has forever perpetuated this reputation for always being "robbed" and he seems to convince fans this, but he has nobody to blame but himself for this fight, and Leonard.
@skeptic91 Really? You think Vito won? Well, I guess you award points for wrestling and getting close to your opponent. There are a few close rounds, but most are clear-cut and the only ones that obviously belong to Vito are 5, 9, 11 & 13. At best, he wins 6 rounds. I give him 5. Rest of the fight clearly Hagler's as he lands more and cleaner punches. Robbery? You bet. Yes, Hagler was bitter, but understandable as he was the best for years and unjustly ignored. Made him cynical and paranoid.
To say Hagler "fell into Vito's trap" is giving Antuofermo WAY too much credit, and to say Hagler "messes up" is giving Marvin too little. Are you telling me you score the fight for Vito? Or that the draw verdict is justified? Both men fought gallantly, but again, Hagler clearly won. He didn't make any mistakes, because he WON. The result here was a terrible decision, not a mistake in strategy by Hagler.
Clear win for Hagler; very poor judging. Hagler boxed beautifully and, won at least 10 rounds. The only way this is a draw is if you deem a number of rounds 'even.' Vito put up a good fight, but just was not in Hagler's league. The amazing thing about Marvin is while it took him until 1980 to win the title, he was clearly the best middleweight in the world for a good two or three years prior to that, which means that for close to ten years he was supreme at 160 lbs. All-time great, no doubt.
@ezekielwahwah I wouldn't say he "brawled" with Vito; he fought him and beat him. As I said, he won 10 of the 15 rounds and, IMO, he boxes beautifully here. "Boxing" does not mean keeping away from your opponent and running laps around the ring -- not Hagler's style. In the rematch, Hagler was actually more aggressive, leading to a knockdown and several clashes of heads, which in turn caused some nasty cuts that ultimately decided the outcome. But by then Vito had been softened up by Minter.
Hagler fell into Vito's trap here. Despite a superior talent, style and technique, he went down toe to toe and was successfully weared down by Vito.
Hagler played the first 5 rounds very well, displaying a steady right lead jab... Then he messes up: I tell you the point when Hagler quits boxing and starts brawling: that happens exactly at minute 16:49, after Vito's left hook. :-)

I believe Hagler won the fight but Vito put up a helluva battle; I have no problem calling this fight a draw. While I watching, I forgot that this was one of the old school fifteen round fights. Thanks for the post sweetfights!

@carbert68
Hagler's mistake in this fight was to come down and trade shots too closely with Antuofermo, and Vito roughed him up.
Hagler should have stayed away and expolit his reach advantage and superior tehcnique, instead he came to brawl and was weared down.
ezekielwahwah 10 months ago
@ezekielwahwah I don't think Hagler made any mistake at all. The judges made a mistake!
carbert68 10 months ago
@carbert68
Hagler was technically superior: he should have boxed Antuofermo. Instead he brawled with him: wrong tactic.
In fact he changed approach in the second match and won.
