It's supposed to be a sequel, but Bethesda took a massive shit all over the canon of the series. So most of us (that have played Fallout 1 & 2) consider the game to be more of a spin-off and not a proper sequel.

@HylianSlayer Fallouts 1 and 2 take place in California, as for the Great Khans, they have appeared in F1 as a simple gang of raiders and in F2 where they were resurrected by the last surviving member of the Khans from Fallout 1.

You know, aside from setting up the Enclave as jerks, this doesn't make much sense if you think about it. The Enclave's entire thing is for "pure" humans to rule the world but Vaulties are about the only pure humans left by their standards. Theoretically they should be welcoming them

Then again no one ever accused Government workings of making sense, especially despotic rule the world kind of governments. I'll probably get flamed for that but it's just an observation not putting the game down.

Fallout 1 and 2 were the best in the series. They actually contnued a great storyline. I don't know what Bethesda developers were thinking with Fallout 3, it was a good game though, but it did not continue the story to the slightest. Fallout: New Vegas was a better Fallout 3.

@OperatorXP Mr. house (in New Vegas) says it was the chinese, and in another game (Tactics I think) they mention that the Power Armoured US troops were advancing on Beijing... but there's no conclusive evidence of who pushed the button first, just a lot of hints that it was China. It is generally assunmed that the situation snowballed after that, with everybody attacking everybody else and nobody truly distinguishing between friend and foe.
