Thankyou so much for sharing! I'm really happy I get to see this show you posted because I'll probably have a bunch of music from this in my rep now that I discovered it
I think it's genius how it sounds so much like a song of that period. (Every song in this show fits its period, though). It won't be a movie; it's just too theatrical, and film is too literal a medium to do it justice. Happy 80th, Mr. Sondheim...
that's what i love most about this particular musical, there are so many adaptions and variations of the characters. especially the balladeer.(the narrarator)
and if i don't? I had in mind Paul Dano, Jim Sturgess, or just anyone who can act and sing. I had in mind the balladeer also being oswald, but NPH is also a possibility.
I'd love to see a film version, though I don't expect one. I think some studios may be a bit hesitant to touch it because 1) its not a wildly well-known musical like the ones they've been turning into films and 2) some people may be confused by the message of the play- some studios may be worried that some may think it is pro-assassination.
I agree, but those people who think that are IDIOTS. Here's My dream cast and crew: Booth-Johnny Depp or Daniel Day Lewis Czolgosz-Sacha Baron cohen Hinckley-Jim Sturgess or Elijah Wood Zangara-Raul Esparza Byck-Russel Brand or Ciaran Hinds Moore-Marillon Cotard or Casey Wilson Guiteau-John Glover or Jonathan Pryce Fromme-Zooey Deschannel Balladeer/Oswald-Paul Dano Proprietor/Gerald Ford/Bystander-Geoffrey Rush or Paul Bentley
My Dream Cast Booth-Johnny Depp or daniel day lewis Czolgosz-Sacha Baron Cohen Hinckley-Jim Sturgess or Elijah Wood Guiteau-John Glover or Jonathan Pryce Zangara-Raul Esparza Byck-Russel Brand or Ciaran Hinds Balladeer/Oswald-Paul Dano Moore-Marillon Cotard Fromme-Zooey Deschannel Proprietor/Bystander/Gerold ford-Geoffrey Rush or Paul Bentley Something just broke voices- Original cast Written by Alan Ball & John Weidman Directed by sam mendes
@kwgybo345 please....for my sanity....not Johnny Depp for Booth please.....I love him, great actor and all that, I accepted him as Sweeney Todd because he acted it well, but let's leave the rest of Sondheim's masterpieces to people who can sing with BALLS!
I LOVED your Booth! This looks like a really fun production! The Balladeer had some rhythm issues here and there, but I actually liked his voice and costume.
something about the balladeer is not right with me.. I might have to agree with AshleyDough and say that he is playing the role too fabulously for me...
I like it, both have great voices, but both could probably use a bit more controll. there were one or two notes on both sides that seemed a bit wild to me.
I think the balladeer is supposed to be voice of reason and of hope, as well as how we see these assassins today. (See the whole "Why did you do it, Johnny?" bit.)
And the balladeer is played a little too fabulously for my tastes, as well. But Booth is amazing. On par with Michael, if I dare say.
-cont-Which is something I apply to this Booth as well. I can't say I was exactly smitten by his voice. Tends to get a little high for my tastes. Though a good voice, it doesn't win Booth for me; and with him my favorite of the assassins by far (and prominent in the show), the voice hurt. (BUT, I think his acting is spot-on!)
I think wisteria meant that some of Booth's notes are sharp. This tends to happen on the short notes and on the highest notes. The Balladeer does this, too, and in the same contexts. Precision can be improved by developing relative pitch with a little practice. Since the accompaniment doesn't play the melody, it's really easy to get a little off key in this song. I think that everyone does very well overall. And it takes guts to post a performance on Youtube!
I agree with MattBarlow on the force of the Balladeer's singing; though this clip diffused most of my doubts, it could have been done better. And I can't say his constant near-sultry smile and hip-twitching is endearing. But, interpretations!
This video makes me terribly happy. The singing was clearly amazing. And, WOW. This Booth is one of my favorites! (After Michael Cerveris, of course.) I wish I could have seen this production!

Do you think they'd ever make a movie adaptation of this? i'd see it with the right cast. anyone else have thoughts on who could play who? REPLY

by the right cast you better mean NPH.

@jumpingwhitebean
The perfect cast is who played each character in the original musical. Each person in the musical is also a damn good actor.

@kwgybo345 This is a joke, right? I will literally commit suicide if this happens and Zooey plays Fromme.

Dude, you are awesome as booth!

Oh. My. Gosh. I absolutely love the part at 6:40 but especially again at 6:55 when he sings "Let them cry dirty traitor..."

Alright,
1. Why is dressed that way?
2. Eh.... He's not doing it for me. He's not very good.

Balladeer reminds me of Patrick Cassidy. The tempo seems too fast though.

I thought it was meant to represent how the soldiers were setting fire to the barn?

it feels faster than it should be.

Tempo is much to rapid, making the singers struggle to keep on key and precise with ennuciation.

I am looking for footage on Zac Herold. He is a tight end from Nebraska-Omaha who signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a rookie free agent.

Actually, looking back on it, the Balladeer's voice was very similar to the voice of the guy who was in the OBC (not the one with Cerveris).
Booth was wonderful. Even with what few vocal slips there were, he kept me engaged and gave me a few chills. Major props!

The original balladeer was Patrick Cassidy, brother of Shawn and half brother of David. He's good, but I still prefer NPH.

the balladeer was played a bit too much as a flamer for my tastes
BroadwayBoy2007 4 years ago
is the balladeer supposed to be alter-ego devil as well as the proprietor?
Lauris24 4 years ago
Don't think so. I think he is just repeating the story and what Booth was saying.

booth was okay. but I think I'm a little biased, a friend played booth recently in a college productionand was received by everyone as fantastic.

Booth was excellent, nearly as good as Cerveris and Garber. Balladeer was pretty good, though he could sing with a bit more force.
