My dad would do this for me when I was in elementary school; he said it was to keep the jelly/jam from soaking into the bread since you didn't eat the sandwich for a few hours. Don't know if that's true or not and I don't do it myself now, but it's not like he would put tons of butter on it just a thin layer so you didn't really even notice.
@mrskellington33 I have heard of it. and it's revolting. Jam is all cold and because of it, often it can result in half melted, half solidified butter
@matthewrs7 Not really. Its really not that disgusting. But this is your opinion. Dairy and fruit are quite a common combination. Like banana cream pie, or strawberry ice cream. Either way, I can't argue about this because this is based entirely about opinion.
@mrskellington33 That is because butter and margarine have the salted flavor in them where as in pies it's the creams. Much like yogurt with fruit flavoring. Completely different flavored.

@matthewrs7 Well, most people use unsalted butter on toast with jam.

@mrskellington33 That doesn't change the flavor as much as you think, the flavor is in the oil itself

@matthewrs7 Like I said, that's your opinion.
