I just hate that "octopusses" was used (1:04) and is now correct because too many people were too stupid to learn "octopi." :/ The rule was simple, really. End in an s, the plural ends in an i.
@OddFacade Octopi is NOT the proper plural for octopus. That rule about -us ending words becoming -i ending words in plural is for Latin nouns. 'Octopus' is of Greek origin and thus the plural should be 'octopodes', but THAT didn't catch on very well. Consequently, the plural for octopus IS octopuses.
@amore004 Every teacher I ever had to taught plural forms of vocabulary made specific tidbits about such words as "octopus," "rhinoceros," etc. All the plurals ended with an i. Maybe it's a regional thing, but from all the books I've read, I've never seen "octopuses." Personally, I'm going to stick with "octopi," and I'm not going to say it differently because of any changes that Websters makes because of human incompetence.
@OddFacade Websters, Oxford, whoever makes notes on the English language (and the etymology of its many, many loan words) made note that it should be octopuses. I mean by your reasoning, what's the plural for words like campus or bonus or virus? (or anus? just to be silly). Yes, words are changed for many a reason (including human incompetence,) but when I hear someone say octopi, I just giggle.
@amore004 Well I giggle (and wince) at "octopuses." So now, I diplomatically request that we pull up two chairs, have some tea, and giggle at each other. X3
Each arm......... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
@MichaelHanTaeJun "Octopi" is false Latin. Some jerks thought that just because it begins with "octo" (eight), it has to be Latin, when in fact, it actually is Greek. It is completely correct to say "octopuses" or "octopodes" (the correct Greek plural), and incorrect to say "octopi", although it is commonly used.
ashleywb33 is right fuck space who cares theres nothing up there of value the sea is awsome what if some undisclered fishie's blood could cur cancer or sumthin

We're probably years off from this technology. But its probably gonna be possible probably gonna be simplified like mini cameras take a pic of wjats on one side and display it on the other.
That could be possible, But I was thinking more in terms of nano-technology type membrane layer that alters its color based on a chemical interaction with its environment and sunlight. Much in the same manner that the octopus uses it.
(Soundlng like a nerd now) I am thinking more in terms of an ultra light compund, like a thick layer of skin that can be used on a human body or on the surface of any machine to disquise it.
I saw the mini camera thing in a movie with a F-117 Stealth.
Not as an argument on the matter of overestimating the octopi's intelligence (rather the scientists') but is there any evidence that the octopus didn't smell the prawn during those cross tests and simply followed the smell?
actually your right to a degree but the fact is , the octopus used a sophisticated trial an error system to learn that the fcross gives food like a chimpanzee and the mazes direction like we would learn the layout of a city to find a nice restaurant, it is instinctual intelligence because its used in nature on a regular basis but the fact is its a sophisticated form of intellect for any invertebrate =)
no problem at all =) they cephalopods are actually quite intelligent , well some are , the octopus are intelligent for the reasons shown under, but some type of squid may be even smarter in respects to communication, the humbolt squid is actually thought to have a sophisticated colour pattern communication skill..they have an outer colour we see of red and white, and under that they have a great many colours consisting of the entire spectrum of the rainbow like octopi =)
I think grahamchapmans question is valid and I dont think you answered it properly. They dont mention whether the prawn was moved with the cross shape or not after the supposed association. If the prawn was also moved then the octopus could quite easily have followed the scent and not the shape but if the prawn was left behind a different shape and the otopus still entered the door with the cross then theres proof of association.

Actually, when I think about it, that still doesn't properly answer my question, imo... Think of it like this: If a shark can follow a scent trail of blood over several miles, how can we prove that the octopus didn't just sniff out from what general direction the praw's smell came from? ... I think I read somewhere that octopi smell with their tentacles, so it would actually just need to whiffle two tentacles and check which one of them that caught the strongest smell, wouldn't it?
I know my reply is like an IF statement on Microsoft Excel but if you read it again I reckon it does make sense. I was pointing out that in the video, when they move the cross from the left to the right they dont metion whether they leave the prawn on the left hand side behind the circle or whether they moved it with the cross on the right. If the octopus enters the cross door and the prawn is behind the door with the circle THEN you can say the octopus reckognises shapes...see what im sayin?
Oh, you mean like that! That the octopus would pick the shape that it visually recognised rather than the smell or some other factor that might've affected it's choice, right?
Yeh, it would elliminate the question of whether he followed the scent or the shape, ie. you have a very valid question that isnt answered in the video...graham the octopus experiment detective strikes again! (it was the first thing I thought when I saw it too). Its the only time id ever question the legend that is David Attenborough.
well that kind of goes without saying that the prawn moved with the shape, and you could say the same about any animal as all fruits give off a smell =p
Phaloxxx, your missing the point. If the prawn moved with the shape then you could argue that the octopus followed the scent and not the shape. and your missing a point too, i dont think theyd let the waterflow give the octopus that kind of advantage to smell it, its like saying they would set it all up knowing they are doing something pointless, i seriously doubt anyone who is investing this much time into the animal would do that, you might not understand that, but i do, i understand what your saying and im telling your that i dont think that counts into it, its like making a square wheel. just pointless
