I actually thought this game was set at a later date than 2012. I don't think it outright states what year it is, but the world looks to be decently futuristic- when you read the info on the computers in AC1, it talks about how things are at the time, like video games overtaking movies. That doesn't seem like something that would happen in just the next couple of years; neither does an advanced piece of technology like the Animus, for that matter.

Looks like a plot hole, if that's the case.

In that case, however, it does appear I am wrong; according to various sources I have come across, the game is set in 2012.

It doesn't actually bug me, I just find it kind of funny that our view of the future even as soon as 2012 seems to be so advanced. Even Heavy Rain, set only a year from now, features technology that kinda-sorta exists but will not be nearly so fast and streamlined even by that time (referring to ARI, of course).

Translation, next game should be Desmond, probably with a few freaky flashbacks of anscestors that happen without him being in the Animus (Like the flashback of Altair)

subject 16 also says that gengis kahn had a piece of eden which was this sword that could cut through anything
