I purchase one of these and the get up and go really isn't that bad. It will definately be better in the turbo, but I love the car. The interior really makes you feel like you are in an expensive car, and the outside looks like a sports car. Beats a Toyota Prius Homo on wheels any day of the week.
Most 4 cylinders come with lack of attention to any serious tuning, but Hyundai decided to give a rat's ass about making the 4-banger do more and thus went to do so.
How do you think they pump 1000 WHP with the same engine? Its all about tuning and part selection. Of course, this is said without the care of mass production cost in mind.
If you have to ask why people want more speed and HP out of their cars, then you must live in an area where defensive driving isn't a matter of survival. Go to a large metropolitan area like NY, Washington DC, or Boston and try merging onto the highway in some econobox with 110 HP. Good luck not getting run off the road by some big semi. Me, I'm waiting for the Veloster Turbo to come out in the summer of 2012.
@roman61 Agreed. I have a Prius and can't wait to get rid of it because of the danger of having NO acceleration when I need it in defensive situations. I'll wait for the Turbo model too.
The Mazda3 with the Skyactive engine uses direct injection also to achieve better fuel economy. Some customers complain of engine noise from this and are unhappy. Mazda offers no fix and says it's a characteristic. If you believe some of the articles online, both Ford and GM have matured their GDI technologies so that have neither the noise nor the carbon problems. Certainly warrants another look at their offerings.
Does this suffer the same problems many other direct injection engines have with the carbon build up on the valves? Very expensive to fix down the road.
The Veloster has a strange appearance, but the more I look at it the more I like it. It's unique. And if the Forza 4 is as realistic of a simulator as it claims, which i believe so, this car sure can corner. Looks like a fun ride.
Other than a real nice interior that I like better in the Veloster, how is this better than say a Ford Focus hatch (or less expensive sedan) that gets essentially the same excellent gas mileage out of a more powerful, larger engine and larger car and to me looks better as well? Warranty? Cost looks to be minimal? Would love to see a head-head comparison done. My family has both makes.
He messed up 2 points, it weighs like 2700lbs that's alot more than a miata, maybe 9th gen civic weight? and while it's 1.6l has 130hp hondas b16 that hasn't been made since 2000 makes 160hp and well that's more from a 1.6l
We hate our Hyundai its been in the shop to much now have to have a new thermostat put in !! They should have to pay you when a new car is always having to go in for service!! 4 times in 6 months means its JUNK!!!

I own two Hyundai's since 2006 and have not had one single issue whatsoever. Can't say the same about my previous Civic and Eclipse, though I loved them both!
back is pretty sexy but the front from a straight on point of view its too much of a "hey look at me i'm different than all the other cars on the road and i try too hard to do so!!!!!"
i didnt understand how in some pictures theres 5 doors and others theres 3 but there was no sign of the 5 door on hyundais website, what i found out in this video ruined this car for me...should offer a 3 and 5 door option hyundai :S
I test drove one today, and it feels very solid and the materials a very good quality, the only thing I did not like was the automatic transmission, is a little slow to shift, but you can get the manual trans.
They should have put a turbo with that 1.6 L engine :( not bad looking and I guess you can't have fuel efficiency and horse power under the same hood :)
@98LetsWatch 31mpg out of an economy car priced at 24k, and being a Mazda makes it not among the best deals by any meals. Not when you can purchase Hyundai Sonata for less than 20k loaded and it gets better mileage, more room, better speed, and better quality.
Retarded. Its either a manual or auto. All this it has a a manual 6 speed but change automatically is bs. That clearly means the car change gears on its on which means its a damn automatic. Unless you changing gears before the cars which is dumb as well cause you doing is messing up the transmission anyway. It wont let you even touch the red line cause soon as it gets close to it, it'll change by itself so wtf?? You cant race it cause it wont let you get all the power out each gear.
@89powerup A 6 speed LIKE a manual but shifts automatically isn't bs. it uses dual-clutch computer automated transmission, without an inefficient torque converter that's used in most cheap automatics. Don't try to be a smartass; it just shows what a dumbass you are.
@EricRiebauEddieBauer man... its a automactic damn. That made no sense at all. It works like a manual it just shifts automatically. WTF? Then its an automatic.. I dont get why they try to make automatic rides sound so good by saying its like a manual. No its not cause a manual, you in charge of the gears not the computer. Where as with this so called a manual that shits automatically, the computer still in charge of the changing the gears. Once it gets to that certian rpm, it will change. crazy.
I like the styling but I wouldn't buy it. It's a commuter car hiding behind the looks of a hot hatchback. Maybe the turbo version will be worth driving?
"Hyundai has figured out how to get 138HP out of a 1.6L".
I'm sorry, is that alot? In the early 90's Honda figured out how to get 167HP out of a 1.6L engine, that's 100HP per Liter. I think the car's styling is very nice, but with a curb weight of around 2700lbs, it's not going to be winning many races with an output of 138HP. Then throw in enough airbags to float the car across the pacific, and bad driving baby sitters like DSC & VSC, and you have potential winner turned Loser.
@DevilTC Why the hell do people want more speed out of their cars? Racing? Who the hell races in public roads anymore? Cars are meant to be driven, not raced. If you want to race, buy a racecar and take it to the track. The Veloster's meant to look and handle sporty, not race around like most idiots do on public roads.
@ArcanineKing Let me see if I can clear this up for you. There are those that "can" drive well and those that can NOT drive well. The latter FAR out numbers the first, with this in mind it is sometimes necessary to OUT-accelerate these persons in order to negate the chance of a collision. If you economobile is being toted as "sporty" then mindset is that can accelerate well and is nimble, not overburdened by airbags and held back by an animec engine that can barely move it. Consider THAT.
@ArcanineKing I feel the same way about cars that go 200mph and cost a small fortune. who would really a car that you could get most of your fun out of on the track.
@ArcanineKing Oh, I don't know. How about pulling out on the highway? Passing? Avoiding that guy that's about to change lanes into you? Having some fun?
@ArcanineKing Apparently, you haven't been to California...drive along No5 or 210...you will need speed...(I do on average speed of 80~85 mph for my commute).
@bartmatton Yes well, at an 8:1 compression and around 14 ~16 PSI of boost pressure. We are of course not comparing a factory turbocharged engine to a normally asperated engine. My original comment was this Hyundai engine power output to displacement Vs. Honda's B16A engine; both of which are NA engines. If however you would like a factory NA engine that can be turbocharged compared to Subaru's EJ20 engine, then here you go: Toyota's 2AZFE; 9:1 comp if boosted @ 14~16 PSI yields 400+HP.
@Mercman97 Why are you attacking america? Not everybody knows about every gearbox, but that's because not everybody is great with cars. Some Americans do know what those gearboxes are. I don't know too much about this but i just saw the car in an ad and i wanted to see a video of it. The hillbilly thing is unnecessary -.-. There's no reason to criticize how people say the word coupe; people say things differently. I do agree that the cars made here have a bad reputation though.
Test drove the veloster today while at my dealership. The car is very sporty, quick (even though it only has 130 hp) and very comfortable. in a 1/4 test drive i was able to get it up to 95 mph and it took corners like a champ. I would defiantly reccomend this car to anyone looking for a very nice hatchback for a low price. and for those asking turbo charged? they're making turbos that you can buy directly from korea for the Veloster. I give it a 4 1/2 out of 5.
Finally... a car where I can go pick up my drunk friends and not worry about me getting out to put the seat up haha. Just tell em to get in on the other side.
OK if i want to compare this car to a small economy car. I think dodge neon. Lets see a 1st gen is 2300pounds much lighter, has 150hp dohc and 132hp sohc and a bigger 2.0l engine. The Veloster Defiently does not 30hp more than the competition lol and thats a fucking neon...
@JORDAN1840 And Hyundai says that the Scion tC is a competitor for this. tC has 180hp & 173 ft lbs tq (at the wheels, it's been dyno proven already) The Veloster does 0-60 in 8.5 sec while the tC does 0-60 in 6.5 secs, has 138 hp, deffinitly not 30 more hp than the competition. Does .82 g's on the skidpad while the tC does .87 g's. And Hyundai says this fills the gap that Honda left with the end of the CRX, yet the CR-Z is the CRX's replacement, which I'd rather take a CR-Z over this.
Front is too busy and thin looking. Headlights are great, but everything else needs a re-design! Rear needs a bit more design. Front looks like someone in auto shop cut sheet metal and welded it together (not good). Transformer console-yuck! Wheels are sweet. Short rear end limits cargo and looks off-balanced. My suggestion: keep headlights, wheels, and profile & re-design everything else!
It's amazing how it has better interior room, trunk space, agility, visibility, technology, and interior quality than a Honda CR-Z yet it gets better fuel economy! And this isn't even a hybrid. Hyundai sure got it right this time
cant say its super sporty but a base model is 18000. Maybe its not bad at all fro the price. 18000 6 speed manuel I wouldnt buy it cuz its not my style, byt as a car enthusiest I think its alright. three door thats pretty clever. Not bad
I really like this. Sort of like the CRX. Good MPG, good power, nice looks, decent handling and power. This is what the CRZ should have been. I think I'll skip over Gen 1 and seriously consider the turbo in 2013.
I just saw it and it's a brilliant design. The only problem and it's a deal breaker is that like many hatchbacks, headroom in the back is for 5'10 and under. I'm 6'2 and it was bad. Damn shame really. Leg room was good and seats were very comfortable.
Dunno what Mazda's doing with their Miata if this guy is telling the truth... How can a small roadster be similar in weight to this? The Miata needs to go back to it's old days when it was a lightweight, agile car.
That being said, maybe I'm just too traditional but I'd still RATHER have a car where the doors are symmetric on both sides... Practically speaking having one rear door is fine but still... :P
Bought a black one. It looks hotter in green or orange but resale will probably go down if you pick a 'special' collor. It has 140 hp wich is plenty for every day traffic. Not enough for track days thow, but I'd buy a Megane RS over the Turbo version Veloster. In this class however: absolutly the best car to buy AND save some money.
Okay, as a kid that loves V8s and whatnot, I really want this car. A car that mimics what the CRX was. It's light, handles well, and doesn't need a whole lot of power. It'd take one with the base engine just to have fun with. Sure, if I could pony up for the turbo model then yeah, but I'd be happy with the base.
I really like that the NAV unit can play DVDs. I wish the Genesis Coupe did as well. Nice car! I will seriously consider buying one when they introduce the turbo version.
Three doors isn't the car for me but I can see how broadly that would appeal to a lot of people.
Ten years ago I would not have considered a Hyundai because I have horrible memories of a friend's Pony back in the 80's. They have come a long long way in a short time. I still prefer American cars though and thankfully they're catching up in quality and innovation.
I just bought one in Phantom black with the Tech pack. It drives so awsome. Very nice gearbox, gr8 engine and very nice interiour. Absolute winners car for real life.
i dont usually like hyundai nor plan to buy one...but mannn this car is cute!! Maybe i should get this car and put my extra money on mods rather than getting a GTi.
ugly. hyundai= cars for old people.

Even my Honda Civic holds 3 adults in the backseat. I really want to get this car, but space for only 4 people is a deal killer.

1.6L @ 130hp isn't unheard of.
The previous 1.7L Civic engines got 115hp with very good fuel economy. EPA 32/39.
And that was like 10 years ago.
Maybe Honda should bring back those little 4cyls...?

Dumbest car ever:
1) Normal people look behind them before getting out streetside.
2) Dangerous if you need to get out quickly in an emergency (like the fucking car's flipped or on fire or whatever)
3) If there are 2 in the back and you're driverside, what is this - you have to climb over the other person to get out if you're getting dropped off??
4) Driver side door now = twice the extension into the street = more dangerous.
Don't design something and then not test it in real life.

@SuperCracksmoke If your ever thinking about buying and you have the money, you should wait until next year for the Turbo version :D

JORDAN1840 4 months ago

Hyundai sure got it right this time
TheBadBuffalo 5 months ago 39
@TheBadBuffalo Except for aesthetics. The CR-Z looks more elegant than this... goofy looking Pokemon.

@dc2sakai well yeah, i guess that's true

@TheBadBuffalo now all they need to do now is add a turbo.

cant say its super sporty but a base model is 18000.

I think I'll skip over Gen 1 and seriously consider the turbo in 2013.

hyundai veloster = scirocco interior blended with megane coupe body :)
TheAnarcshit 5 months ago
I agree, it does look better in real life. I can't explain why.
styfle123 5 months ago

TheBoogie24seven 5 months ago 3
Bought a black one. It looks hotter in green or orange but resale will probably go down if you pick a 'special' collor. It has 140 hp wich is plenty for every day traffic. Not enough for track days thow, but I'd buy a Megane RS over the Turbo version Veloster. In this class however: absolutly the best car to buy AND save some money.
Iron883Man 5 months ago
Hyundai has a winner in its hands. Just not in a dull silver color like this one. And a hotter boiler engine yeah ;)
adriannippy 5 months ago
Okay, as a kid that loves V8s and whatnot, I really want this car. A car that mimics what the CRX was. It's light, handles well, and doesn't need a whole lot of power. It'd take one with the base engine just to have fun with. Sure, if I could pony up for the turbo model then yeah, but I'd be happy with the base.
PantstofryPWNZ 5 months ago
I really like that the NAV unit can play DVDs. I wish the Genesis Coupe did as well. Nice car! I will seriously consider buying one when they introduce the turbo version.

Three doors isn't the car for me but I can see how broadly that would appeal to a lot of people.
Ten years ago I would not have considered a Hyundai because I have horrible memories of a friend's Pony back in the 80's. They have come a long long way in a short time. I still prefer American cars though and thankfully they're catching up in quality and innovation.
