I saw Clarke live as part of the Trio! performance with Jean-Luc Ponty and Bela Fleck in Montreal 2005. I did not yet know Clarke's music (reason going: Ponty) but he sure did blow me away (the entire show did). The interaction between Clarke and Ponty was amazing! Such artists, such showmen. Fleck seems more subdued but I guess he's younger. I think it brought the best out in all of them. It was a lively repertoire and people who've seen it seem to be asking Where is the album of Trio?!
@alexowain don't get me wrong brus, i really dig stanley clarke; but in this tune he seems to go way overboard playing real quick and to me he looses that kinda 'pop' that i usually hear in his playing. i'm not saying that hes just hitting random riffs i just don't get the groove hes going for in this tune is all
@tobesone : Yes, he didn't seem to hit his grove. Perhaps because he just comes out on stage "cold" with people that have been playing for some time before he arrives.
@MrUnforgiven066 Dude, stop being such a defensive moron. Tobesone only spoke his honest opinion. Stanley is amazing, we all know that. But just because he's Stanley doesn't mean that his playing will always please everyone. Some people appreciate music played in different ways, it's all subjective.
@taufoofar he just said that he is playing random. but he doesent know what he is talking about because he is not a musician ! if you are a guy that paints, i cant come to you and say : this looks like random, you don't seem to get into a nice picturie at all this rubish. its that fine to say that ?
@MrUnforgiven066 How would you know he's not a musician? And even if he's not, you don't have to be so offensive. And besides, just because you don't like a certain style of music, doesn't mean you're not a musician. Jaco hates slap. Thousands of bass players around the world love Marcus Miller. Does that mean that Jaco is not a musician?
Obviously you don't know stanley clake is a lead bassist, and the first to ever use a bass guitar out front as a lead instrument. He is known by all experienced musicians for this. But he is also a master bass player, and double bass master. Try researching stanley before you insult a master and inovator renowned threw out the world for playing lead bass over the main chorus. He hire bassists just for this on tour, but also play right along with the chrorus.
shortly after benny rietveld joined santana, he played a version of this without any other instruments one night at the fox theater in detroit. nothing flashy, very musical, very heartfelt. in my book, much more powerful than this.
This is a Marcus Miller penned tune, that he wrote for Miles' TUTU album. Thsi has to be played with heart and feeling, just like you heard it here. But for God's sake, don't deprive yourself of listening to Marcus' version. It kicks ass out of the room!
@free2bpoppie yeah... Bernard Wright told me that Marcus came up with Tutu when he started playing the guitar and learning guitar harmony. He and Marcus both are from Jamaica Queens. lol.. They met at a Music store jam session.
IMO, Stanley Clarke is one of the baddest bassists on the planet. I have only one album of his, "1, 2, to the Bass", but his work in music and movies throughout his career just stands out. Great rendition of one of my all-time songs from Miles
fantastic

this just sounds kinda random, he doesn't seem to get into a nice groove at all in this song

@tobesone You must not know music.
tatertotsrock2196 1 year ago
@tobesone He shoots his wad too soon, then he doesn't have no place to go but play the same riff over and over again.

@tobesone think of what he is not playing as well then it will fit into the structure a musician like this has no need to play "kinda random"

Sharky, where are you, I miss my "brother" you taught me how to play. Then there was Pablo on percussions. I hope you still live.

I don't get this. He is perfectly capable of doing funky stuff on the bass. Why is he playing on top of the main bass line.
