Wonder why this is "Ukrainian" both Byelorussians and Russians do the same thing. One thing is for sure Bluwho, nobody makes bread as good as the Ukrainians. It's addictive.
Russians don't traditionally make pysanky, except for ethnic Ukrainians within Russia. Belarussians make their own version of pysanky, as do many other slavs. They differ in traditional patterns and motifs, and level of intricacy.
You're right, it likely developed separately in all of these Eastern European countries at the same time. the origins of painted and decorated eggs actually comes from Persia, where they would gift these eggs during the Spring equinox, and was later imported throughout the world. The chinese, too painted eggs for special occasions thousands of years ago.
@violetviolets Many cultures have colored eggs, but the wax resist/batik method is limited to the Slavic peoples. It probably arose in early slavic times, and has evolved within nations to include different styles and motifs. Some nations, like Ukraine, place more importance on the pysanka that do other Slavs.

Kiev Rus', seems source of East Slavic primitive culture, which evolved to become Russian, Ukr, Belorus, Russyn, others?
Seems to me the culture developed NEAR what is now Ukraine, as 'adjusted' by Kruschev & Stalin... et al...
Obviously a beautiful culture, let's hope it survives long enough to bring more benefit to USA materialistic tendencies! Perhaps even Vlidimir & Dima?
