Joe Pass had nothing to work out. 99% of what he used to improvise was in standard positions, chords, arpeggios, scales all vertical stuff. His greatness was to play that tremendous amount of data so smoothly and effortlessly, with great promptness and big heart.
It was an imperfection, and that's because Joe would never play a tune twice in the same manner. Ever.
He was improvising every single note and voicing 24/7, still hunting the right progression, octave etc.
I personally saw him many times playing splendid chord solo tunes and showing he could switch them to any key with no effect on his playing. That's what playing duo with a singer can bring you to.
Objectively one of the greatest Masters of all time.
@SquigglyJ0e Yes I agree. I love his playing. I wish to be able to do that one day. And it's actually nice to hear someone on that level make a little flaw here in there...it shows that they are human.

@SquigglyJ0e He did vary his arrangements constantly from performance to performance, but he did it consciously and the new arrangements were worked out. Instead of admiring him as some guitarist from another planet, let's stay realistic: He was a huge talent in every way. Maybe it only took him 5 minutes to work out a new arrangement, but he was not walking out there onto the stage cold playing this stuff.
erm, if u wanna stay realistic speak of things you do know. He has been improvising from scratch even in studio, switching a whole standard to any key in a blink, ending up playing a whole new armonization. He used to freak out everybody in the studios, changing his mind last minute even about playlist.
I know what I am saying, I was his student and personal friend.
That's what he has been doing all of his life, often duo with singers thus having to do all the work himself.
@SquigglyJ0e No. He worked out his arrangements beforehand. You do him a disservice by overstating things. People get too focused on the amazing virtuosity, and think that the few masters that have ever been able to play like Pass (if any) are these "idiots savants" who just play whatever comes into their heads at that moment. The reality is that he was an amazing arranger. His pieces were carefully arranged, and some did have improvised parts.

One of the greatest virtuosos ever.

I heard Martin Taylor and some Brazilian guitarist play this tune...and I hated it.
But this I love!
