Bear in mind when they're talking about privatizing Social Security that they're only talking about partially privatizing it. Partial reforms are these are especially dangerous because not only do they have the inherent instability that comes in every government institution, but it also opens up Pandora's Box of corporate corruption. Complete privatization where the government gets out of Social Security completely would be a very good idea, but partially, this is dangerous.
Liberal is not what liberals are. There is nothing liberating about being a liberal If you are calling for greater control of our lives by the government, that's the opposite of liberation. The modern day liberal has nothing in common with the Jeffersonian concept of liberal and liberty. So if we have people who call themselves liberals, who are subscribing to an ideology that is the opposite of the spirit of our founding documents, then they are on the wrong, and yes, bad side of things.
And th emodern day version of coservatism is in no way like it was originally either by your moronic logic. Bush has been one monumental fuck up along with his dad, Reagan, and Nixon.
@NUTCASE71733 No shit, both parties are the BIG GOVERNMENT PARTY. There is not two parties in Washington there is ONE. Ron Paul is one of the only real limited government advocates
The government collects SS taxes from employees and employers each year.
The government pays out SOME of that money to current retirees.
The government Spends the rest on ordinary stuff and does not save in trust fund or invest it. And they don't count the IOU as debt in the defecit calculations...just free money to spend.
@NKNIGHT62 Too bad this isn't the number 1 top comment. The number 1 top comment had to be some idiot saying that SS has a $2.6 Trillion surplus, which is absolute nonsense.
Stand up 4 your RIGHTS Americans+ The REPUBLICANS have been FOOLING YOU for the last 30 yrs. SOCIAL SECURITY*, (SS) , is NOT an entitlement! SS HAS A $2.6 TRILLION SURPLUS. SS CAN pay every claim at least until 2030.+ SS DOES NOT increase the federal budget by one cent!Tell the REPUBLICAN GANGSTERS & THEIR WALLSTREET BANDIT FRIENDS that you will FIGHT any PRIVATIZATION OF your SS pension. You will FIGHT ANY REDUCTION IN BENEFITS.~YOU will FIGHT any change in AGE REQUIREMENT FOR SS BENEFITS!
@poindexterwitkowsky so you and 8 others have no clue how the economy works. social security is a huge liability. yeh it will be able to pay out claims until 2030 maybe. but within 6-7 years it will be spending more money than its making. That surplus could grow to 3-4-5 trillion by then but once it goes into the red unless we have a massive and quick population collapse SS will go from insolvency to bankruptcy in less than a decade once it dips below. odds are the us $ will collapse b4 then
@poindexterwitkowsky If Social Security has a 2.6 trillion trust fund and can pay every claim until 2030, why did President Obama say Social Security checks may not be paid without a debt limit increase?
Fox news is biased? What about cable news in general?
Hey you want to know what the government did with the social security money you paid in? Spent it on programs and lower taxes for the 60 years....and now it's gone
Private IRA and 401k accounts fluctuate with the economy but I know what's in my stock account. How about your Social Security? Nothing but politician IOU's. I make decisions with my money but special interests make decisions with yours.
@preiify That won't tell me what is really going on. You crazy people make me giggle. This country is a corporate dictatorship, but you braindead lunatics make us normal people look bad.
@normalais well, tell me which parts are not true. are you telling me the federal reserve has been good for the people? keep watching msnbc, cnn and fox and keep your head head up your @#$
@preiify fox, cnn, and msnbc? I haven't even had a TV in my house for a year. We liberals do not watch TV that much at all, and when we do it is not mainstream media. Haven't watched them in years.
What a dick, the Obama worshipper only reads the liberal emails of course. The shithead needs to look at it this way; do you want no benefits after the current Social Security system goes bankrupt, or do you want to privatize it and at least receive some benefits.
@SonofAmerica1111 current Social Security system will not go bankrupt. That is a lie. It will be 100% solvent until 2037 and 75% solvent unti year 2100. Bankrupt? LMAO
They are going after SS because they are robbing us. You're just too stupid and too brainwashed to see it. "Freedom" is what they call it. hahaha
@normalais Ok then, I know Bush and Obama "broke into the lockbox," so get rid of SS so the government can't steal everybody's tax dollars to fund their own private programs.
@SonofAmerica1111 ROFL so the solution for getting rid of social security is to get rid of social security? You retarded righties make me laugh everday!
Social Security brings in less than it gives out as of 2010. In 5 years it is bankrupt. Shall we privatize it then? When they people have no ownership there is no stewardship, no responsibility. Why does Medicaid spend so much money on individuals vs privately insured? The privately insured watch their pennies and know where those pennies came from. Unless you entertain the idea of another failed soviet state I suggest you get keen on capitalism rather quickly. Another topic will be inflation.
Cafferty is a fool. He ignores what caused the housing bubble. The housing bubbles roots are the Feds low interest rate and government mandates. You see, it is actually the government that started it all. They failed in Katrina. Poverty hasn't lowered much at all since 1970, even though we are taxed to death to help the poor. Social security is borrowed against for government spending and is a ponzi scheme. The government cannot run social programs well and prove it constantly.
@jeremyraybrown Cafferty is a a fool...? Or you are just another traitor....? Social Security money have been use to finance Wall Street rescue plan and for two wars WHAT DA FOOK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT IDIOT....????
@Darealwhip Cafferty wasn't complete in his statement, because he didn't get to the root cause. Everything else I stated i perfectly accurate. Why did you even reply to my comment?
Why do you Blatantly ignore the Glass Stegall deregulation act...? and the fact that MONEY FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY HAVE BEEN USE FROM OTHER PURPOSE THAT THE HELP OF THE PEOPLE THAT PAY FOR IT.....Why are you triying to Ignore that fact that WALL STREET HAVE BEEN THE ROOT OF OUR PROBLEMS IN THE LAST TWO DECADES....?
@Darealwhip I agree that wall street has bought congress. But it was the easy money policies of the Fed that allowed much of the immorality in the first place. I think I already stated in my first comment that social security is a ponzi scheme and the government uses it for its own interests like funding immoral wars. Most people have some level of greed and the government enables that with horrible laws, regulation, and easy money from the Fed. P.S. Obama is aweful!
Unfortunately I do not have all the facts and after Obama's promises I held HIM RESPONSIBLE FOR A COMPLETE INVESTIGATION INTO THE SOCIAL SECURITY RANSACK UNTIL THE LAST PENNY FROM 1980 TO THIS DATE AND THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE WHETHER REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRATS this traitors need to be bring to justice .....They are merciless destroying the place that give me shelter from evil
SS needs to be changed. What you do is make the SS account an INDIVIDUAL account (no one can steal it, not even the gov). As soon as a US citizen is born, they get assigned a individual SS account, fdic insured. The individual can contribute up to 100 grand a year tax free, cannot touch it until they are 65. Family, friends would be encouraged to gift to the childs account. Employers SS contribution goes into this account. 65 years of savings would mean a great amount of money for retirement.
We admire all of your passionate debate about change of the health care system in your country. That is a democracy and we watch with interest! Change is difficult in any culture and country . Rest assured that there are other countries (CANADA) that have survived your anxiety with Tommy Douglas and have gone on to create a health care system "for all". Keep the faith because it is good for ALL.!
Thankfully it appears healthcare reform in the US is dead. It could still get through somehow, or perhaps some parts of it, but for the most part, the idea of public involvement in healthcare is dead for now. We are keeping up the fight to maintain a private system where citizens are allowed to have as much or as little healthcare as they desire. The free market is wonderful.
Hopefully you are on the "as much " side and not on the "as little". Your selfishness astounds me! Did you give to Haiti Relief or is that of their choosing as well?
I'm on the as little side. I'm young and healthy; don't need to go to the doctor every week. As for my supposed selfishness, statistically speaking I give more to charity than you in terms of percent and amount. The average American gives 2% of their income to charity, about $1000/yr. On both percent and amount I'm multiples above average. Don't go assuming things you don't know about. Giving to charitable causes (including Haiti) is wonderful, it just needs to be voluntary.
I don't count on social seurity, but i know people who do. To give it to wall street investers is the same as taking it to Vegas and letting it ride. If it had been privatised a few years ago when Bush tried it, 45% of it would have been lost with the rest of the stock market.
How about letting people voluntarily invest their own FICA contributions outside of SS? It's one thing to force privatization, it's another completely to allow people to invest their funds into an outside annuity or investment. Do you object to voluntary opt outs of SS?
not at all. I would love to take what I pay and put it into my IRA. In the end they wont allow us to do it. If they did, we would have a list of investments to pick from, kinda like a 401k at work. More than likely these investments would be tied to who ever wrote the bill. IE, we would be able to invest in KBR or halliburton or what ever drug company gave a large donation to the senator who wrote the bill.
What makes you think "they" won't let us? Bush proposed a limited form of this. No one wants to force people to invest in Halliburton; don't be ridiculous. Just as some people object to privatizing all of SS because it jeopardizes their share, why can't people who don't want to stay in SS voluntarily opt out and forego any benefits? We should allow opt outs to reduce future obligations and means test to stop giving benefits away to people who don't need it. That's how to fix SS.
@oterj0 The way to fix SOCIAL SECURITY IS BY GOING AFTER EVERY PENNY AND EVERY ASSHOLE ( REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT) WHO PARTICIPATE INTO USING SOCIAL SECURITY MONEY FOR OTHER PURPUSE OTHER THAT THE SECURITY OF THE PEOPLE THAT PAY FOR IT
Okay, I take it you're talking about the SS "lock box"? It really doesn't matter if the trust fund is a vault with cash or a number in an account. The reason the trust fund is empty is because the cash that is there is used to offset other borrowing by the federal govt. If instead we kept the cash in the trust fund, then inflation would eat away at the trust fund's value while other borrowing that could not be displaced would cost us more in interest. How would that help us?
The same lies and deceiving that The BUSH administration use to borrow 900 Billion dollars to finance a protect his interest in Irak are the same LIES YOU ARE REPEATING OVER HERE...Obama need a complete investigation to find out every person involve in this CORRUPTION....Paulson is only the tip of the ICEBERG....
What are you talking about? I thought this was a string on SS. You seemed to allude to the SS trust fund above, but now you're talking about the War in Iraq and Hank Paulson?? Please be more coherent.
I am not lying when I say that the SS trust is used to offset more borrowing by the govt, that's what it's used for. My questions to you are would SS be any more solvent with a "lock box"? Would the balance sheet of the fed govt look better with more cash and more borrowing? Hint hint, no & no.
Austrian, did you actually watch the video, did you live a cave during the Bush years? If we had privatized Social Security it would be bankrupt. SS is fine until 2043, and if we have strong economic growth it will be great for much longer.
It's not fine until 2043, only it's balance sheet is fine until then. The SS surplus is used to offset the need for more govt borrowing on the national debt. In other words, when SS starts running a deficit in 2017, there will be problems. Then we'll have a generation of deficits in SS that will exhaust the trust fund which has already been spent anyway. When we do exhaust the trust fund, with the size of deficit in SS, there will be little hope. Privatize or means test. Pick your poison.
The corporations just destroyed our economy with their wild gambling. The health insurance and pharma industries are bleeding our economy. The Republican Supreme Court just opened the flood gates of corporate election spending including foriegn corporations. But if your rigid conservative ideology is such that you can't recognize corporate corruption and the threat to our democracy then you must ignore all that and blame the Democrats.
We should've let all corporations that gambled wildly fail. The free market solution is take all the risk you want, but suffer your own consequences. Wamu was one of the riskiest banks. Their shareholders got wiped out when FDIC closed the bank. That's what happens when you invest in risk taking corporations. Even so, not sure what this has to do with SS. I asked the question as to whether or not people could voluntarily opt out of SS. Should they be allowed to? Why or why not?
Still we need to go after every penny and EVERY NAME OF PEOPLE MAKING A DECISION ABOUT MONEY THAT DO NOT BELONG TO THEM...This is a FREE MARKET ECONOMY....Do not come running to the govermente for help .....NO TO COMMUNISM
This is the guy who was convicted of leaving the scene of an accident in which you struck a cyclist and then ran two red lights while pursued by the police and was subsequently ordered to serve 70 hours of community service back in May of 2003 disqualifies him from posing as a "Man of the People" on a major cable news network.
Are you A LIAR....????? Ponzi scheme or not Wall street and CORRUPT DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS NEED TO STAY AWAY FROM MONEY THAT DO NOT BELONG TO THEM .....Free market economy....you are free to go up or down....But with your FOOKING MONEY NOT WITH OURS....
Ummm no. Me no liar. SOCIAL SECURITY MONEY, GONE IT BE. pONZI SCHEME IT IS, AND A BIG ONE.Quit writing incohernet dribble about shit you know nothing about, OK Yoda
It is something special that I need to know...PONZI OR NOT PONZI ....I want the names of the corrupt assholes DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS that have take money out of there for any other purpose than to help the people that pay for it.....SIMPLE....NO ROCKET SCIENCE....
The entire government is guilty of using social security funds to cover expenditures. Its not like a couple of congressmen in ski masks broke into SS and stole the shit.
To cover expenditures....as long as those expenditures are related to help the people that put money on it ...IT IS OK....But cover FOOKING BAIL OUTS.....DEFENSE PORK.. HALLIBURTON BAIL OUT ....... FUCK NO....
It doesn't matter what the government spent it on, it matters that they spent it. The whole premise behind SS is fundamentally wrong and crooked, as are all ponzi schemes.
Lets see, pensions are vanishing, financial institutions have lost countless dollars that Americans trusted them with, 401k.... a joke! Social Security is being considered for privatization, the few peanuts some retired people get. Save your money....where? The eh ah banks? Regular people are getting FU---!
Well fine, let's let people stay in SS if they want the security of it. What about the people who don't want to stay in SS? If you're willing to let those individuals voluntarily choose to opt it if they forego all benefits, would you be okay with that?
Social Security is not a pension. It's a social safety net. Jesus Christ, why don't most braindead Americans get that? It's amazing how oblivious most people are when it comes to the idiotic idea of privatizing Social Security. And the negative consequences it potentially has. Privatizing Social Security is codeword for destroying it. Sure, Social Security has it's fair share of flaws in the system. But it's the only thing most people have.
Okay, then why do we give out benefits proportionally to FICA taxes paid? The people who paid the most in FICA taxes have the least need for the safety net. If you're right that it's safety net, then benefits should only go to those with need. Anyone who has greater than $50k/yr retirement income does not need SS benefits. Let's cut off their benefits, lower FICA tax rate, and leave the benefits just for the truly needy. Solvency and a true safety net. Do you support this idea?
There's no difference between a government-run ponzi scheme and a privately run one. Most people have no idea how social security works, or even how poorly it performs.
Except one big difference, in a privately run scheme, funds will dry up eventually and the whole thing falls apart. While in a government run, contribution is not optional, so it will keep going until the population or the economy contracts.
It's not perfect, but it's better than the alternative.
"in a privately run scheme, funds will dry up eventually and the whole thing falls apart"
This is a good thing, it exposes the fraud before it consumes the entire economy.
"While in a government run, contribution is not optional"
Correct, they force you into their scheme at the point of a gun, unilaterally change how much you will contribute and how much you will receive. This is not good.
The alternative, being responsible for your own savings, is far better.
I believe the alternative of being responsible for my own savings is in fact far better. So, why not preserve SS for those who wish to stay in it, but allow those who wish to opt out to do so?
@oterj0 No.....Lets get every penny that got out from our SOCIAL SECURITY SINCE 1980 TO THIS DATE.....FUCK WALL STREET, AND ALL THE DEFENSE CONTRACTORS.....
I'm not even sure what this means. What do Wall St and Defense contractors have to do with the fact that SS is a Ponzi scheme that is headed towards insolvency?
As long as I am compelled by force of law to contribute to your ponzi scheme, it will be my goal to bring it down. However, if you allow me to opt out, then I will have no more vested interest in the success/failure of SS. Would you support voluntary opt outs??
If the government could strictly and merciless let every AMERICAN THAT WANT OUT OF SS GET OUT FOR GOOD I would support an anmentment that allow Americans make their our saving for retirement ....But don't we supposed be on A CAPITALISTIC FREE MARKET ECONOMY ???? WHY GOLDMAN SACK STILL ALIVE ????? Do I get a written warranty that if you FUCK UP WITH YOUR MONEY YOU WILL BE PICKING UP CANS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE....
I would be completely fine with signing something that affirms no responsibility of the govt to provide for me in retirement or disability if it meant I could opt out of paying all FICA taxes.
So why Goldman Sack run towards the GOVERNMENT ASKING FOR HELP...A decade ago they were bitching about GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION .....They never share their wealth on GOOD TIMES ....FREE MARKET ECONOMY MY ASS!!!!
Not sure the relevance to SS, but remember that it's within the power of the govt to NOT intervene when the hedge funds ask for a bailout. It's really simple, just don't pass bailout bills and hedge funds asking for bailouts becomes irrelevant.
Goldman Sack and all other bankers have been UNDER THE DESK OF SENATOR AND SUPREME COURT and after those DELICIOUS BLOW jobs on politicians do you think they will be deny anything...?????
First off, that's absolute conjecture on your part and almost certainly ridiculous. Second, if you don't want bailouts for industry, then vote for people who are against corporate bailouts, simple as that.
For my GOOD OL' USA SAKE.....Could you be more naive....? I am for get every penny BACK FROM THIS MOTHER F...From Clinton Mexican BAIL OUT TO THE LATES ......FUCK EM ALL ...This is not China ....This is a free maket economy ...YOU ARE FREE TO GO UP TO HEAVEN....BUT YOU ARE ALSO FREE TO GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OUT HOSE AND EAT SHIT..... And please do not scream for help....
That might work on the TEENAGE I Carly world but here on the adults world it just does not carry any JUICE.....Are you aware that on the President Clinton years there were a Mexican Investors BAIL OUT...(BECOME MORE AWARE.....PLEASE) AND LET ME REPEAT This is not China, We have here a "FREE" MARKET ECONOMY...You can go all the way up....But you can also go all the way to the bottom of the OUTHOUSE TO EAT SHIT....
Buddy....There is not ROCKET SCIENCE INTO THESE....You are part of the PROBLEM OR PART OF THE SOLUTION ....Just by looking at your statements it seems to me like YOU ARE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION FOR THE CORRUPTION PROBLEM IN USA....SO...?
And another big difference privately run ponzi schemes are ILLEGAL, for some reason government run ponzi schemes are not, but it's amusing that you're defending the government that continues to steal as much as you let them.
It is not a safe net. It is an illusion. The state allying with the corporations was part of the problem. Increasing regulations will only make the problem worse. The state will just selectively enforce regulations like it does now. Abolish the monopoly. Abolish the state. It is just a tool of the rich.
Democrats in the Senate don't want to privatize Social Security but they have investments in the Stock Market. And how about the pension they get after they retire, yes, the stock market. It's good enough for them but not good enough for us?
Thank GOD somebody in the public eye is pissed off with and for us! We need protection from crooks like you! There's just not enough prisons or convictions for the money crooks.
It's also interesting to note that if people were allowed to just take the amount of money that goes into Social Security, and put it into an index stock fund a person who's retiring today would be getting (without taking one cent of taxes from anybody else) in the neighborhood of about eight thousand dollars a month. Think about that. Eight thousand dollars a month, give or take about a thousand. And it wouldn't be coming out of anybody else's pocket.
And if you lose it in the gambling market, which is what a 'speculative' market is; ie; stock market? You come whining wanting a bailout which GOD only knows you wouldn't want anyone else to have!
An index fund or index tracker is a collective investment scheme (usually a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund) that aims to replicate the movements of an index of a specific financial market, or a set of rules of ownership that are held constant, regardless of market conditions. Why?
Ah, I bought 100 shares of Microsoft in 1986. Do you know how much it's worth now? Good luck not investing into the stock market. The money you get from Social Security won't be enough to buy one week of groceries.
There's NOTHING secure about the stock market, it's nothing but gambling! It is morally repugnant to me that anyone would support such sin that actually destroys it's hosts...and thus violates morals.
Wrong. In fact the Senators and Congressmen and women have pensions. And the pensions are invested in the stock market. I bought 50 shares of Microsoft in 1986. Do you know what it's worth today? Good luck trying to collect on Social Security 40 years from now. If you think the Stock Market is a form of Gambling then you need to educate yourself.
No wonder they did this illegal bailout for the stock market. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Stock market IS gambling and so is immoral. That's why our country is going down the tubes. Disgusting.
The stock market is not gambling. I have owned stock since 1986 and I have done very well. Buying a lottery ticket is dumb and gambling. And Democrats love that king of gambling.
It is gambling...unless you have inside information that tells you how stock is going to do....and if you do....you've committed a crime as that is called 'insider trading' and is illegal.
No it's not. You need to good financial adviser. And Nesnman is correct. The pension plans that the Senate and Congress have are invested in the stock market. It goes up and down but it goes up much more then it goes down. Gambling is the lottery, and that is stupid if you buy a ticket.
And here is another lie democrats tell the dumb voter. They support the poor. Just check out the sales tax in the home state of Obama full of democrats . They raised the sales tax. . Over 10 percent. That doesn't effect the rich . That effects the poor
Why do you care what people do with their own money? If people want to stay in SS for the security of it, fine by me, just let me voluntarily opt out of SS in exchange for foregoing all future benefits. I'd personally much rather take my FICA taxes and do some "gambling". Would you object to me voluntarily choosing to opt out? You are free to stay in the current system if I opt out.
Cafferty is an idiot! I would rather take control of my own money than let the government, who can't seem to get anything right, screw me. Its a negative return. You would have a better return by stuffing your money under your mattress. If you are under 40 and make an attempt to take care of yourself, why would you think this is a good thing? Ever hear of a pyramid scheme?Do you young people really want to fund retirement for someone else?Pay back what was collected then eliminate it!
You do not have a clue....Just picture your retirement money on the drain with 2008 WALL STREET CRASH....These GENIUSES JUST FUCK UP A TRILLION DOLLARS AND CAME TO ASK THE GOVERNMENT FOR A BAIL OUT....FUCK THEM .....I want REAL FREE MARKET ECONOMY .....IMO WALL STREET IS FREE TO FALL ALL THE WAY DOWN....FUCK EM....
@Darealwhip In case you didn't know, the Dow is above 10,000 and going strong. Only fools pull out of the market when it is down. Smart people invest money in a down market because it is an opportunity to make money. I guess you probably don't understand how it all works so I won't hold that against you. Instead of spouting off about things you obviously don't understand maybe you should study about investing and really do yourself a favor.
@e190snafu Like I said before....Good for them.....Now ....How much they BORROW TO MAKE UP FOR THE BAD INVESTMENT IN MEXICO from the CLINTON ADMINISTRATION....WE NEED OUR MONEY BACK and If I am still in a CAPITALISTIC MARKET ECONOMY WE NEED INTEREST ON THAT MONEY THIS IS NOT THE SOVIET REPUBLIC OF AMERICA
i'm intrigured. why are republicans a joke? what is your logical thinking behind this? do you have a better solution to social security? are the democrats even considering a solution? if you are under 45, wait until you retire and get that social security check in the mail. i'm not saying privatizing is the answer, but its a step towards change. without that, our country is in for a rude awakening in 10 years.
What did Democrats do for Social Security? You remember that Bush stimulus check? You know where he got that money? From the fund that was meant to bolster Social Security for the next 25 years.
I guess I don't see how my generation owes your generation a retirement check. The world you left us is in shambles. We are scrambling for energy to run the economy while we are at war.WE produce next to nothing and our economy could collapse any day. Thanks for what?Maybe you old people should have lived your lives better and saved more so we younger people could take care of our families. Now you want to pay NO TAXES?You inherit
Get back to work and quit sniffling. I'm taking care of my old mother. Shall I throw her out in the street? You would, wouldn't you? You're so perfect, just wait, life will slap you good.
small minds..."A Muslim could never do the number Bush has done. Right?" so what's your point. are you trying to say because you are a christian you think you are better? I love Yeshua Messiah but God is no respecter of persons..whether you are muslim, christian, or whatever...the love of God is the same and He shows no favoritisim and that is why He died for us all...so please do not try to exault yourself because i bet you your life is not sin free and that does not make you any better.
Wake up, people! If you let McCain privatize Social Security, you might as well get used to living in a cardboard box right now, just to prepare yourselves.
Forget about the shills touting 3rd party candidates - the people who post these are all happily employed in the McCain campaign.
while I agree in principle with how you feel about that person, let's please try to raise above the lack of civility which repugs are so prone to. Just a thought.I am a 58 year old mom and grandmother and am just so saddened by what has been happening over the past years. For the sake of my children and grandchild and for all children of the world.Let's try to be the best that we can be and not slip into the gutter as the neocons so often do.Truth and justice hopefully are on our side.Obama '08!
America is about to crash and burn. Everyone will be working until they drop dead because either they will privatize social security or the US will not have the money to pay for all the people on social security. They have already spent that money on the war and are robbing Peter to pay Paul in a sense to pay for social security and other programs now. The next president whoever it is, is in for a rude awakening. The cupboard is bare.
It really is sick to watch them. "OPEN more drilling" They already have more land and drilling leases out there to last them YEARS, but they do not drill. Why? Is it because they wish to purchase such then sit on them and wait till the price goes up? Then sell, and they make lots of money never breaking a sweat. (futures) Or is it that they wish to get in under the 1872 mining law where they don't pay the public royalties on that which they take from public lands.
How wrong you are kjboy27 - I am in the same boat that you are in, slightly younger but I look at things for what they are - you could say that I am a realist. I don't sit around and feel sorry for myself and try to make the best out of everything.
I am not delighted in my prediction - it is what will happen, like it or not. We are in serious trouble and the sheep do not see it.
Do you think that anyone (in govt.) cares about Mr. & Mrs. Peon? They only care about themselves.
I think social security should be optional. The constitution of the United States of America does not grant the federal government the right to force taxpayers into supporting an inefficient system that is doomed to fail. FDR never planned on Social Security to be a permanent solution, and now America has an enormous problem on its hands. The system will collapse before I will ever receive anything from it, and I have already paid over two thousand dollars into it. Also, Medicare is just as bad.
I don't know about that. You see, when FDR made it, the problem that is threatening SS today was inconceivable. I mean, if you were in WWII, I don't think the idea of a massive baby boom could occur, right? I think he intended it to be permanent and we have to constantly adjust it.
I disagree. FDR knew what he was doing. In fact, the SS system is exactly what has kept the US from resorting to the communism that was predicted by C. Marx. So, if the Republicans want to cut such progressive measures, they will be cutting their own throat.
Fascism-the fusion of political and corporate interests. The gov now owns most morgages, insurnce, and soon the auto industry. Pump out them tanks detroit. MCBAMA=WAR AND ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY!! I hate to say it but barring a massive revolution were gonna be worse off than ever in my life. Cling to your guns, gold, and god b/c the gov doesnt give a shit bout u
if you privatized social security it wouldn't be social security anymore would it? it would be private security. republicans HATE social security because it is socialism.
We need to elect the best leader to try and deal with this mess. After 8 years of Bush, I'm ready for a new leader. Let's get out there and vote for Obama. I think Obama can try and fix some of these problems and try to get our country back on track. I don't believe in the Republican party and their lies and smear campaigns. I don't trust them and I believe the McCain/Palin ticket would equal 4 more years of Bush. We can't afford it folks.
"The Federal Reserve and CFR control the government and the large corporations who control the media. Translation: the rich elitist bankers and oil tycoons in this country (and some other countries) control the government and the media."
Unfortunately, social security is not enough for retired Americans to live on. Social Security IS a FIXED INCOME. Will our economy recover? Not likely. Was Ron Paul correct? Yes.

You will FIGHT ANY REDUCTION IN BENEFITS.~YOU will FIGHT any change in AGE REQUIREMENT FOR SS BENEFITS!
poindexterwitkowsky 11 months ago 12
@poindexterwitkowsky so you and 8 others have no clue how the economy works. social security is a huge liability. yeh it will be able to pay out claims until 2030 maybe. but within 6-7 years it will be spending more money than its making. That surplus could grow to 3-4-5 trillion by then but once it goes into the red unless we have a massive and quick population collapse SS will go from insolvency to bankruptcy in less than a decade once it dips below. odds are the us $ will collapse b4 then

Did you give to Haiti Relief or is that of their choosing as well?
hoidman 2 years ago
I'm on the as little side. I'm young and healthy; don't need to go to the doctor every week. As for my supposed selfishness, statistically speaking I give more to charity than you in terms of percent and amount. The average American gives 2% of their income to charity, about $1000/yr. On both percent and amount I'm multiples above average. Don't go assuming things you don't know about. Giving to charitable causes (including Haiti) is wonderful, it just needs to be voluntary.

TheAustrian8 2 years ago
I don't count on social seurity, but i know people who do. To give it to wall street investers is the same as taking it to Vegas and letting it ride. If it had been privatised a few years ago when Bush tried it, 45% of it would have been lost with the rest of the stock market.
leykisfan1 2 years ago
How about letting people voluntarily invest their own FICA contributions outside of SS? It's one thing to force privatization, it's another completely to allow people to invest their funds into an outside annuity or investment. Do you object to voluntary opt outs of SS?
oterj0 2 years ago
not at all. I would love to take what I pay and put it into my IRA. In the end they wont allow us to do it. If they did, we would have a list of investments to pick from, kinda like a 401k at work. More than likely these investments would be tied to who ever wrote the bill. IE, we would be able to invest in KBR or halliburton or what ever drug company gave a large donation to the senator who wrote the bill.
leykisfan1 2 years ago
What makes you think "they" won't let us? Bush proposed a limited form of this. No one wants to force people to invest in Halliburton; don't be ridiculous. Just as some people object to privatizing all of SS because it jeopardizes their share, why can't people who don't want to stay in SS voluntarily opt out and forego any benefits? We should allow opt outs to reduce future obligations and means test to stop giving benefits away to people who don't need it. That's how to fix SS.
oterj0 2 years ago
@oterj0 The way to fix SOCIAL SECURITY IS BY GOING AFTER EVERY PENNY AND EVERY ASSHOLE ( REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT) WHO PARTICIPATE INTO USING SOCIAL SECURITY MONEY FOR OTHER PURPUSE OTHER THAT THE SECURITY OF THE PEOPLE THAT PAY FOR IT
Darealwhip 1 year ago
Okay, I take it you're talking about the SS "lock box"? It really doesn't matter if the trust fund is a vault with cash or a number in an account. The reason the trust fund is empty is because the cash that is there is used to offset other borrowing by the federal govt. If instead we kept the cash in the trust fund, then inflation would eat away at the trust fund's value while other borrowing that could not be displaced would cost us more in interest. How would that help us?
oterj0 1 year ago
The same lies and deceiving that The BUSH administration use to borrow 900 Billion dollars to finance a protect his interest in Irak are the same LIES YOU ARE REPEATING OVER HERE...Obama need a complete investigation to find out every person involve in this CORRUPTION....Paulson is only the tip of the ICEBERG....
Darealwhip 1 year ago
What are you talking about? I thought this was a string on SS. You seemed to allude to the SS trust fund above, but now you're talking about the War in Iraq and Hank Paulson?? Please be more coherent.
I am not lying when I say that the SS trust is used to offset more borrowing by the govt, that's what it's used for. My questions to you are would SS be any more solvent with a "lock box"? Would the balance sheet of the fed govt look better with more cash and more borrowing? Hint hint, no & no.
oterj0 1 year ago
Austrian, did you actually watch the video, did you live a cave during the Bush years? If we had privatized Social Security it would be bankrupt. SS is fine until 2043, and if we have strong economic growth it will be great for much longer.
calamagrostis88 2 years ago

But if your rigid conservative ideology is such that you can't recognize corporate corruption and the threat to our democracy then you must ignore all that and blame the Democrats.
calamagrostis88 2 years ago
We should've let all corporations that gambled wildly fail. The free market solution is take all the risk you want, but suffer your own consequences. Wamu was one of the riskiest banks. Their shareholders got wiped out when FDIC closed the bank. That's what happens when you invest in risk taking corporations. Even so, not sure what this has to do with SS. I asked the question as to whether or not people could voluntarily opt out of SS. Should they be allowed to? Why or why not?

oterj0 2 years ago
Social Security is not a pension. It's a social safety net. Jesus Christ, why don't most braindead Americans get that? It's amazing how oblivious most people are when it comes to the idiotic idea of privatizing Social Security. And the negative consequences it potentially has. Privatizing Social Security is codeword for destroying it. Sure, Social Security has it's fair share of flaws in the system. But it's the only thing most people have.
HarveyRex23 3 years ago 5

17Spartacus76 3 years ago
Except one big difference, in a privately run scheme, funds will dry up eventually and the whole thing falls apart. While in a government run, contribution is not optional, so it will keep going until the population or the economy contracts.
It's not perfect, but it's better than the alternative.
saucy05 2 years ago
"in a privately run scheme, funds will dry up eventually and the whole thing falls apart"
This is a good thing, it exposes the fraud before it consumes the entire economy.
"While in a government run, contribution is not optional"
Correct, they force you into their scheme at the point of a gun, unilaterally change how much you will contribute and how much you will receive. This is not good.
The alternative, being responsible for your own savings, is far better.
17Spartacus76 2 years ago
I believe the alternative of being responsible for my own savings is in fact far better. So, why not preserve SS for those who wish to stay in it, but allow those who wish to opt out to do so?

It's also interesting to note that if people were allowed to just take the amount of money that goes into Social Security, and put it into an index stock fund a person who's retiring today would be getting (without taking one cent of taxes from anybody else) in the neighborhood of about eight thousand dollars a month. Think about that. Eight thousand dollars a month, give or take about a thousand. And it wouldn't be coming out of anybody else's pocket.

nesnman 3 years ago
An index fund or index tracker is a collective investment scheme (usually a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund) that aims to replicate the movements of an index of a specific financial market, or a set of rules of ownership that are held constant, regardless of market conditions. Why?
Licmycat 3 years ago
Ah, I bought 100 shares of Microsoft in 1986. Do you know how much it's worth now? Good luck not investing into the stock market. The money you get from Social Security won't be enough to buy one week of groceries.

There's NOTHING secure about the stock market, it's nothing but gambling! It is morally repugnant to me that anyone would support such sin that actually destroys it's hosts...and thus violates morals.
Licmycat 3 years ago

Licmycat 3 years ago
No it's not. You need to good financial adviser. And Nesnman is correct. The pension plans that the Senate and Congress have are invested in the stock market. It goes up and down but it goes up much more then it goes down. Gambling is the lottery, and that is stupid if you buy a ticket.

Yea? Well, do it now and show us. It's the corrupt MARKETS that went crawling to gov. Not the other way around. Logic FAIL.

Darealwhip 1 year ago

What did Democrats do for Social Security?
Democrats saved it from Bush's plan.
hardddisk 3 years ago
i'm intrigured. why are republicans a joke? what is your logical thinking behind this? do you have a better solution to social security? are the democrats even considering a solution? if you are under 45, wait until you retire and get that social security check in the mail. i'm not saying privatizing is the answer, but its a step towards change. without that, our country is in for a rude awakening in 10 years.

What did Democrats do for Social Security? You remember that Bush stimulus check? You know where he got that money? From the fund that was meant to bolster Social Security for the next 25 years.
Fiscally responsible conservatives.

Obama has stated all retirees who make less than $50,000 per year will pay zero taxes! He cares about the old. He will not touch social security!
McSame, will privatize it! Your money! He loves as all republiscums do, your money!
But they will find you a GOOD job at Wallmart,$7.50 per hour, part time no benefits hawking chinese trinkets and foreign vegtables.
This is how they view a worker or the middle class! Scumbags. Throw these bums out!
ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!

Now you want to pay NO TAXES?You inherit
the earth from your children.

1776freedomfighter 3 years ago
It really is sick to watch them. "OPEN more drilling" They already have more land and drilling leases out there to last them YEARS, but they do not drill. Why? Is it because they wish to purchase such then sit on them and wait till the price goes up? Then sell, and they make lots of money never breaking a sweat. (futures) Or is it that they wish to get in under the 1872 mining law where they don't pay the public royalties on that which they take from public lands.
pukaman2000 3 years ago 3
you seem to delight in your prediction. That is very sad.
kjboy27 3 years ago

Also, Medicare is just as bad.
nkelly3440 3 years ago
I don't know about that. You see, when FDR made it, the problem that is threatening SS today was inconceivable. I mean, if you were in WWII, I don't think the idea of a massive baby boom could occur, right? I think he intended it to be permanent and we have to constantly adjust it.
Himechansexytightass 3 years ago
I disagree. FDR knew what he was doing. In fact, the SS system is exactly what has kept the US from resorting to the communism that was predicted by C. Marx. So, if the Republicans want to cut such progressive measures, they will be cutting their own throat.
pukaman2000 3 years ago 3
Fascism-the fusion of political and corporate interests. The gov now owns most morgages, insurnce, and soon the auto industry. Pump out them tanks detroit. MCBAMA=WAR AND ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY!! I hate to say it but barring a massive revolution were gonna be worse off than ever in my life. Cling to your guns, gold, and god b/c the gov doesnt give a shit bout u

Social Security is a political 3rd rail.
I hope McCain/Palin keep harping on screwing over the over 65 crowd. Since they are a majority voting share, it would be the end of the republicans.

This is the BEST comment I have read today.

Should we let the fox guard the hen house?
I agree with the lady who wrote in and said, " I suspect my 401(k) plan is just a giant pyramid scheme..."
Rightly or wrongly, I have more faith my SS check will be there when I retire than my 401(k).
Never let a Republican (Con-men) near your nest egg.

Unfortunately, social security is not enough for retired Americans to live on. Social Security IS a FIXED INCOME. Will our economy recover? Not likely. Was Ron Paul correct? Yes.
TabOraSunset 3 years ago
Social Security was never meant to take care of everything. Only fools believe that.
