  • I am restoring my dads 16' Duratech Aluminum Runabout that he had redesigned about 20 yrs ago. The front top was removed and replaced with a fishing deck. A single console with windshield was installed for the driver only and a livewell was put in between the driver and passenger seat. I am replacing all the wood in the boat. Everything was gutted before I got it and I'm not sure where to put foam. Can I use the pink foam insulation the use in houses now?

  • @sixstrings24 If you can't locate marine grade floatation foam, I know of a guy who used pool noodles under the flooring and upper decking of his Duratech. Tied cinder blocks to these things and swamped'em for days to test first...did not absorb any water.

  • It's a shame you stripped all that blue vinyl off to paint it, was it peeling or something? I have a 63' Marlin and the vinyl coating is one of the best things about the boat, my vinyl has held up better than any paint ever could - cool boat though duratech rocks!

  • @djchuckieb DJ Chuckie B, yes she was peeling. You can see the peeling in the video, and the 'bald' spots. I always discourage anyone from stripping the vinyl, but mine was bad. Have you emailed us at the Duratech website before?

  • Great video and nice job on the boat! I am redoing a 1968 Penn-Yan Galaxy cruiser, which was a Duratech Comanche before the company was sold. Hard work but fun.

  • Tom - Send a link to more resto pics when you can. I saw the ones where she was black (yuck). Looking forward to what you do with her. Join the Duratech forum when you can - see the Duratech site for the link - be great to have you there. Regards, JoeMan

  • We are almost finished. Actually I named it the Silverback, so I am keeping the bottom black(which we repainted) and the top a grayish silver. We have decals of a silver back gorilla for it and I think it's going to look great. Iwill join the forum too.

    Thanks,

    Tom :)

  • Very nice job on your boat. I am restoring my old jon boat I got from my Grandpa years ago and your project has been a wonderful motivator.

  • very nice boat about how long did it take from start to finish

  • I began ripping the junk out in February, cleaning it up, removing hardware, etc. Flooring, re-did the transom wood, seats, made new windshield, paint, etc...she was in the water by Memorial Day. 3 months of all my spare time, while working 45 hours/week.

  • I'll be honest, I really have no interest in boats at all, I came across this video when searching for Holdsworth's tune you've played here, but now I find out its not Holdsworth's tune at all! Its my favourite piece on Wardenclyffe Tower but I didn't even notice that its by Steve Hunt. I checked him out and he's awesome, so thanks for enlightening me!

  • Thanks Juls! Yep...the boat is named "Dodgy Boat" after the Holdsworth/Hunt tune...and so it seemed most fitting to honor the both of them by having it play behind the video. And I agree...Dodgy Boat and Zarabeth are my 2 favorites on Wardenclyffe, which is my personal fav AH recording!

  • amazing...nice job!

  • Nice job! Its amaising how much joy boats can bring you!

  • where did you find a new windshield?

  • Used the original frame which was still on her, made the windscreen from Plexi. I would suggest Lexan however, if making your own from a template.

  • You did a great job ! I have my grandfathers 1964 Duratech 17' sportboat which has been in the family since new in 65. I got it in late 80's. Thinking of restoring it like new and putting a 90 OMC on it now ! What did u use for primer/paint ?...Ed.

  • Stripped her down with a water/sand blast method. Used automotive primer and epoxy paint.

  • Good job!

  • nice job

  • Great job on the restoring and great video. Your crazy for putting a 60hp on that thing. lol. How fast does she go?

  • She'll do about 45...which is scooting pretty good for a 16 foot aluminum runabout!

  • Yes, the boat was named for the song Dodgy Boat, written by Steve Hunt and performed with the Allan Holdsworth group. The boat was quite "dodgy" when I acquired it, as you can see!

  • You sure did take a lot of pictures! Very good documentation for anyone wanting to do a similar project. What's a "Dodgy Boat?" Did you name the boat after the Allen Holdsworth song?
