you've certainly made more progress here than the people who made the "3d snake robot" in the reccomendations... this has better natural movement, and at least moves side to side in a sliding motion. you're way closer to figuring out the "scoot" concept that real snakes wouldhave.

I wonder if it moves in that fashion because each individual "joint" of the "backbone" wants to align with the joint at the front, but because it is constantly undulating, they cannot completely form a straight line, so it "slithers"

I bet you already are. Proving advanced mathematical theories takes incredibly smart people, but putting those established ideas into practice just takes some study and some motivation. The guys who built this probably aren't much smarter than your average car mechanic... The guy who first shared how it works in a research paper was the smarty pants. Just pick up a book or two, buy a soldering iron, and keep your e-junk to take apart for components; you'll be building robots in no time.

True. But really, snakes don't feel "trapped". In the wild, they spend 99% of their time hiding in a burrow or den. The other 1% of the time is spent getting food and water. Anyways, my snakes are all in appropriate enclosures and get a few hours of time exploring the house (and the yard, if it's warm enough) daily. In any case, they were captive bred and have never been to Africa or Borneo.
