This stimulus is an ominous sign that Obambi will be a 1 TERM EPIC FAIL and will lose to Sarah Palin in 2012. This country does not need a stimulus and more government spending to help the global economy. No, the world needs Palinomics. Palinomics will have save the world economy, greater than Reaganomics and Clintonomics. Palinomics is blessed with the divine power of GOD HERSELF for Palin is GOD's CHOSEN ONE, GOD INCARNATE and the LIVING EMBODIMENT OF GOD HERSELF!
Besides Mica loves Roads but hates Amtrak. So much for transit funding!
If he could get his collegues to stop insisting on more tax cuts, so we could include more public transportation, and not just high speed rail which just gets him headlines, then and only then could I really trust this guy's so-called support for 21st century infrastructure.
"My Collegues we face an economic 9/11,... job cuts deep and across America,.......now you're going to have to go back tomorrow or this week and look those people in the face and say: I had an opportunity to vote for more jobs"
"because this is about creating jobs...."
He just loves to talk a nice game but still voted against it, as did all House Republicans.
So typical. Mica says one thing and does another. He just can't be trusted.
Finally the GOP is on the right page. Economists say that tax cuts generate less growth than infrastructure spending. So the Dems should take Mica's advice, rip the tax cuts out of the package and put back the mass transit dollars, etc.
It's true that tax cuts are much less effective than infrastructure spending, but what little effect they have kicks in much more quickly. So there should be a tax cut component in the bill, but a much smaller one than what's in there now.
What mass transportation? I thought it was bridges and roads. Old infrastructure. We already have a gas tax to cover these expenses, both state and fed, and the lottery money. The only states needing add'l funds are the ones needing to accomodate the illegals. Why are we all supposed to bail out Pelosi and the rest of the southern belt? Apple, Microsoft came out of the last bad time and by tax incentives, not bail out.
Here in SoCal, the gas tax doesn't even cover our 15 mph freeways. Sitting in a line of single passenger SUVs makes you realize how stupid and inefficient our transportation system is. Only government is capable of the kind of investment needed to break that cycle.
If we don't start spending on new infrastructure, we'll look more and more like Mexico. Maybe in the future we'll wind up with an emmigration problem instead. Imagine Mexico putting the final touches on our wall.
That was my point. The sun belt w/ benefit & I lived in LA, know the problem. However, it was not the WPA that saved our rears, it was the changeover to war munitions factories. Why didn't he ask the auto industry to make mass transportation? We have too many cars, too many demands for an old industry. These are the wrong jobs. Good for the immediate but not long run. The midwest has 2 ft of snow on the ground & can't work but 6 mos yr. Please see Immigrant gumballs. Next vote w/b the illegals.
there needs to be more on infrastructure theres over $2+ TRILLION worth of damage to it im not saying that that much should be in the bill but it should be ALOT more than it is now
This is a government that is 11.5 trillion dollars in debt thinking it knows how to stimulate our economy with more debt and interest payments to other countries that hold that debt? Wierd math to me.
Rep. Mica: I ask unanimous consent for one additional minute.
Moderator*: Is there objection?
Distant voice of A-hole: Yes.
Crowd: Boo!
Yes? Who in blazes said Yes? Jobs are being lost in your district too, buddy, and all you can say is 'I don't want to hear it?'
* - I know it's not moderator, so someone help me with the proper terminology for the lady playing traffic cop to these proceedings. TPM has knowledgeable followers, one should be able to help me.
I'm going to comment before I see what party this guys from so I don't get accused of being left or right. Yeah. Brilliant idea. Times like these call for increased spending on infrastructure and the public sector.
For stimulus, the only things we should be considering are tax cuts and major needed infrastructure spending that are not bridges to no where. Both sides of the ailse have trouble getting it right, but I think Mica is right here that more infrastructure spending is part of what is needed.
There need to be so much more infrastructure spending in this bill, in order for it to have any kind of effect on what's going on. Infrastructure creates jobs, and stops basic things like electricity, water pipes, sewage systems, public transportation, roads, bridges and public buildings from failing, which is what's been happening. Well said Mr. Mica!
tehlime, When did SSA create jobs? This w/a surplus fund, now pay as you go. & how many people remain to support SSA now? The over looked part is this 79 m people are idle, opening jobs, w/have money to spend, especially luxuries, if it weren't taken away from them. Corps receive tax expense credit, the 1/2, but the govern says that 1/2 was not tax. Therefore, SSA recipients have to pay tax on it. It's another Ponzi scheme. To sppt this, we have to grow taxpayers. Next move, legalize illegals.
Rep Mica, Funds for infrastructure repairs have already been collected in fuel taxes. But Congress has chosen to dump these funds into general revenue to make the deficit look smaller.
This stimulus package is no more then massive pork barrel projects. If you believe this package will stimulate the economy I have a bridge I want to sell you. This is sheer stupidity.
mistaspot1: You win the prize for the stupidest comment of the day. Infrastructure is bridges, yes. But also power plants, airports, train lines, sewers, ports and water treatment facilities. Our infrastructure is on the verge of complete collapse. China is outspending us 15 to 1 on these investments, which means in 20 years they will be a first class power and we'll be a third world nation, which can't even keep the lights on 24 hours per day. (Oh -- and it will create millions of jobs.)
And we were REALLY talking about it before the bridge collapse, right? Why don't you try to find me one person who was talking about it before the bridge collapsed and then get back to me. Thanks.
China is outspending because they had no infrastructure. We are a 3rd world nation now, you just don't realize it. Check immigrant gumballs here on Utube. Get out of the trees and look at the forest. Billions of $ are sent back to illegals countries so much so the country counts it as part of GNI. I already pay for all these services, plus tax, plus add'l city tax, county tax plus the lottery earnings. We need Steven Jobs, Nike, Gates, not nationalized infrastructure that's 3rd world.
Infrastructure: the system of public works of a country, state, or region. In otherwords: everything that allows you to go from your house to other places, as well as have electricity, clean water, and your garbage removed from your yard. It's the foundation of our society.
God... I know what it is OK? I'm just saying that before the bridge collapse we were giving NO thought to it whatsoever and it definitely wasn't something we thought was worth spending *billions* and *billions* of dollars on. It's just a disproportionate reaction. It's comparable to Israel killing over a thousand citizens of Gaza for Hamas militants killing 10 citizens of Israel. It's a complete overreaction...
mistaspot: That's the problem - that we haven't been thinking about it for years. Our infrastructure has been underfunded for decades. The bridge collapse is just one example. The levee in New Orleans was inadequate, which everyone knew, but the money wasn't there to fix it. Everytime there's a major storm people go without power for weeks because our grid SUCKS. And this is only the beginning. Most of our infrastructure is 50-60 years old. We're headed for a crisis. Besides, we need the jobs.
Nowhere. Do you realize this money has got to come from somewhere? Do you not care that our whole economy is one big Ponzi scheme? You know what happens to Ponzi schemes right?
I'd rather we let it all fail, but if we are going to put this money together, might as well put it towards something useful, and not line CEO's pockets with it.
I said the same during the wall street bailout. At least by now we understand our dilemma. Nope drag it out. Obama wanted to bring in both parties. He is doing this. Listen to this man. We can work together to be a great nation again. Until then though we need to deal with reality that the future will not be real good for awhile. Maybe years.
Mica was my congressman when I lived in Florida, and i have to say, out of all Republican shitheads that have come out of that swamp, Mica is the one that earned my respect.
Wow, a Republican that isn't playing this bullshit game that the GOP is pushing with the sole intent of delaying help for people not included in the top 1%? I'm impressed.
