I also would consider the Akita Inu more playful than the American Akita,would say get an Akita Inu. To result in having a dog great with kids, invite your kids friends over as often as possible while the dog is a puppy and make sure he is around them quite a bit throughout his life...

There is a big difference between the Akita Inu and American Akita ,American Akita they're too aggressive,a bit bigger,completely different,attitude,ecc..Akita inu is educate,gently with kids,ecc.Really the only huge difference in the two Akitas is their appearance, the American is bigger, has a long body and a long muzzle. The Akita Inu is smaller and more foxy looking with a shorter muzzle. The Akita Inu could be harder to get to listen to you unless you really are its best buddy in the world.

identical to my dog!! mine is akita and doberman mix, but he's white and with the long big ears :P
