We were there in the 4th roll. We skipped school to go to Houston and buy the tickets. The show sold out in less than an hour. It was one the best concerts I ever went to. CARS ROCK!
Now,this is what I'm talking about with The Cars, one of the most incredible bands to come out of the 1980's era. At this time I have a CD of their greatest hits. This just BLOWS!!! me away to see this video, youknow why they are performing in my birth city of
HOUSTON,TEXAS,now that is totally more than Awesome!! Where they are at the
Summit back then ,now it is called The Lakewood Church with at least 13,000 to
15,000 people at all times there now. Now,ironic is that. Cool Cars Cool!!!
you guys are idiots. "blah blah blah" Here...let me put my two cents in, just to include me within my definition of an idiot. Idol is horrific, in all sense of the word. You can't bottle chemistry, and it's difficult if not impossible to define what influence a particular individual has within a group's chemistry. "They wouldn't be anything without..." ...worthless conjecture. One thing I am sure of, Idol has NO chemistry, and is sold to the lowest common denominator.
>>> I was there & still have the ticket.... as mentioned below " the summit" is now a church...John olsten the TV evangelist is rocking the house now.... too funny 'cause that was one smokey party place back in the day ...........
The Cars were a "one-of-kind" band. There was no one like them before, and no one after them successfully copied their style. Very 80s sound even though I started listening to them in 1978.
@ThePrimeDirective: I think that's overstating it. The Cars were a stereotypical quirky new wave band, with which the landscape was crawling in the early 80s. They all share a lot of similarities: short life span, quirky techno flavored music with sanitized elements of punk, tounge in cheek, almost comical performances made new wave songs almost like novelty songs. Cars is similiar to Devo, Blondie, Men at Work.
@ThePrimeDirective: New Wave is a unique, narrow style and all purveyors of it were similar in a lot of ways. The Cars are unique in Ocasek's quirky, iconic look and quirky, iconic vocal sound, and Greg Hawkes absolute genius on the synthesizers. These two elements, and others of course, lifted them higher than they might have risen otherwise.
why would being with someone be wasting their time? Isn't that a put down and an insult? I love the Cars, but sometimes just did not get or dig some of Ric's lyrics.
"I dont mind ya comin here...and wastin' all my time"...its about a guy who cant get with a girl that he wants really, really badly. So he takes what he can get...even if is her just comin over and "wastin his time"
@gyruss73 yeah, but it's still sort of not cool, because the guy just wants to use her and have sex with her, but anything else, just hanging out with her, is considered 'wasting' him time.
I think its the other way around...I think she's the loose one, and this guy actually cares about her. He takes her whenever he can get her. I think the "wasting all my time" isnt to be takin to heart.
One of the best bands ever I bought all of their albums as a teenager and don't remember disliking any of their music. I do think the first 3 albums were the best but they were all good.
@jab1625: I prefer a more polished style of music so I greatly prefer the later albums where they raised the bar on production and released really slick stuff. I know a lot of people feel that rawer, less produced styles are more "real," but I like excellence.
No that does not make you dumb. I grew up listening to the Cars and didn't have MTV to show me who was the main singer early on. We can say we were both ignorant. Ric kinda took over the main role. He did bring Ben back from Chicago after they had played together, and he deserves credit. They do sound very similar so it is an easy mistake to make. Either way these guys were one of the best bands I ever heard. Unfortunately, I never saw them live. That sucks.
You are not alone in thinking Ric sang most of them . Rick was the writer of all these hits , as far as i know , but Benjamin Orr sang many of them . So Rick , being the main writer was the Cars really . Because without his writing there would be no hits for Ben or anyone else to sing .
@sweetfly66: That's oversimplifying it and trivializing the impressive contributions the others made to the band. In particular, The Cars would not be "The Cars" without Greg Hawkes genius on the synthesizers.
@TheLarryBrown ... Yes the other musicians made their sonic contributions and obviously they all went into the totality of the Cars sound but the fact is , without Ric`s songs , there would be no Cars ...its pretty much that simple
@sweetfly66: No, it's not that simple. That's the same as saying "without Greg Hawkes great keyboard parts, there would be no Cars." It took all of the ingredients to make them what they were, not just one ingredient. Bob Dylan wrote great songs, but because he sang like a cat in heat he didn't make #1 recordings. A great song, by itself, is not enough.
@LarryBrown2 ... You are wrong ... a great song is EVERYTHING and thats why Bob Dylan , bad a singer as he is , is generally considered the most influential songwriter in the history of pop music .... and if you want to use chart success as your gauge then that is your option but you`d then have to include people like black eyed peas , brittney spears , and David Soul to the list of " greats "
@sweetfly66: hahahahhahaha.....great get with David Soul. Dylan is not the most influential songwriter because he is totally eclipsed by the Beatles, but now that you make the point it's interesting how few excellent pop songwriters there actually are. Beatles and that's about it. For me, Billy Joel is 2nd right under the Beatles but there are really few others up there in the stratosphere. Eagles, ABBA, Christopher Cross, and others are good but the size of their catalog is tiny.
@LarryBrown2 ... also , if quality of songwriting were not important then why do record labels have a stable of songwriters on hand to write songs for people with good voices ....its because they know that the song is the most important thing ... you can go into any karaoke bar in any city on any night and hear someone with a good singing voice ... so what ...
@sweetfly66: Thanks for negating your own position. So, according to you, if a good group doesn't have any good songs the label can provide...therefore they could have done that with the Cars and even without Ocasek's songs we would have had The Cars. If course I admit that a great song is important, it's just not *everything* that makes up "The Cars." American Idol proves that great singers are not floating around, it's a very rare quality.
@LarryBrown2 i don't mean to intrude in your debate/debate with random youtubers, but i want to put 2 cents in on "idol" and the general public. i believe there are a lot more people out there that are great singers than the show has gotten you to believe are of a "rare quality". they either haven't been given a chance, don't have the stomach for stardom, or have absolutely no care for it. critiqueing is fine, but remember that opinions are like assholes and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
@griswaldNhtown: It’s possible, but I disagree. Idol is a great chance for good singers to actually get a shot at the big time. Those giant auditions coupled plus actual TV screen time add up the best chance any aspiring singer has, thus it’s a big draw to anyone that’s any good. Idol must audition several hundred thousand singers each season, and the best of those end up in the top 40, almost none of which even come close to cutting it. In my book, that means great singers are very rare.
Very tigh live as always. One of the great 'rocksteady' bands. Not sure the tone from the guitars were as crisp in their tone as they could be, a little farty and overprocessed perhaps. Great rendition though !
Was there also however I was one damm yankie transplant. Do you remember a hall and oats free concert at one of the parks about that same time frame. I think Lone star beer was the sponsor.
I moved here to Houston in '83 from Ft. Smith Arkansas. This was the first concert I ever attended. I was amazed at the size of the building! They didn't have anything like that in Ft. Smith! Ben was the bass player and was the lead singer in this song along with some other great songs. Check out Bye Bye Love and Candyo, the live versions to get a good look at Ben in action.
You should check Ben Orr out. He's a giant talent and soooo good looking. He's like a male model up there. He could have been! He's got a great figure and really took care of himself. He was like an Adonis. He deserved to be on a pedestal.
@boatinguy5: Yes, but consider this: how sad are all the talented people that never make it on to the stage so that we can enjoy them and then die anyway? It's great that Orr was able to share his talent and beauty with us.
who hears that clicking ? like the the music part without he keyboard. drumming is weird! anyone else hear that? not in just what i needed anywhere else
It's definately the bass drum mike. It sounds like a "Simmons" electric bass drum, but it looks like he is playing a real bass drum, so I'm a little confused, but it is for sure coming from the miked bass drum in the mix.
ben orr and yes i am a guy is a beautiful man. he just is smiling and u can tell he loves doing what he did. ric on the other hand on the rhythm guitar is like yeayea nonchalant lol
I miss the Cars and Ben very much. They were one of the best bands of all time. Watching this clip makes me sad, it a good way though. I just rebought the whole Cars collection, it is still truly amazing...
In Xmas '79, when I was 10 years old, my older sister gave me a gift certificate to Sam the Record Man...I went downtown and gravitated toward this record. Perhaps it was the chick with the big teeth and ruby-red lips on the record cover; who knows why we make life-altering decisions. Anyway, I picked up the record-- my first rock purchase-- and went home and played in my basement for like 20 years. Shit, i still love some of the tunes on this disc. I saw 'em play in TO in '87. Was fun fun
ok listen up... im 15 and i LOVE the cars and this is one of my Fav song by them god bless the cars u are tru ledges and it very uncommon that you will find that sort of tallent in todays society give my the cars queen and the skyhooks anyday lol
I love this man. I graduated in 89 and only carried tapes by the Cars in my car. Whoever rode with me had to hear all their songs and I made sure of it. But hey it was a learning experience

Was fun fun

This band was one of a handful who set the tone, look, sound, style and attitude of the 1980s.

There was a lot of stuff they made in the 70s too! Moving in Stereo was 75

No kidding. That song wasn't published until their debut album in '78. But, heck, I used to love these guys. Their first two albums were the nuts.
