Hi, actually, I thought that yours was a good question. Once you get online with the unit ( Asus with no CD port.)you can download from Avast.com. The anti virus program is totally free. No one has to ever pay for an anti virus program if they don't want to, there are so many free ones out there. Hope this helps. Super easy set up.
the 900 models are much better, i have one. i work in a computer repair clinic and used this and thought it was TERRIBLE. i wouldn't recommend this model to anyone, but the 900 models aren't too shabby but VERY cheap

@Peytree you turn on the volume by pressing the botton that is in blue called Fn (right next to Ctrl) and at the same time pressing F12. basically, what the blue button Fn does, is: while you press it, you can use all the blue little items that are spread arround. WATCH OUT! The 9200GS is actually horrible for gaming, it's slightly better than my IGP 7150m, 4 years before this card was a twinkle in any motherboard manufacturer's eye. Its an IGP, it's NOT satisfactory for gaming!

A friend of mine bought it for 159e (brand new!!) and since then he stopped using his desktop .For what he wants to do the eee pc is more than enought as he says.I regret not buying it as well for 159e ! :S
its because exaggerated power consumption on cpus and vidcards have begun to send desktops to extinction, i actually predicted this way back -the only way atx desktops can survive is if laptop and net top cpus were made to fit atx motherboards.and vidcard power consumption dropped significantly
This is not negating the value of notebooks as they are supremely useful computers and, for many people, they may be a preferable option over a conventional desktop if you're not going to use a computer for much more than basic work and entertainment and desire portability.
But for serious computing tasks or, most definitely, for high performance gaming, your best bet is going to be a desktop. Better price/performance ratio, upgrade path, and easier to repair if it breaks.
I bought one about six months ago and mine runs linux. Don't get me wrong. I love it, but linux...I mean... there isn't much you can do with it that you can do with Microsoft Windows XP or Vista and even Mac Leopard. I like it a lot but I can't get any games for it, even the linux compatible ones at the eee PC website. I may think about changing the operating system manually but I'm not sure if I should go through with it. what is you guy's opinion on this?
I'm assuming you have the one that has Xandros on it. When I got mine, I tried out the Xandros they shipped it with for a few days then switched to the Netbook version of Ubuntu. Not many full featured OS's will beat the custom Xandros that shipped in terms of loading speed but I like the extra features you get with Ubuntu. I have heard about people using TinyXP on these but honestly, Ubuntu does everything I need. Don't even think about gaming on these things to begin with...
Hello. do you have any idea how to stop the asus eee pc 701 from crashing at the start up. I got mine and it was working fine, then i tried to restore factory settings and now it always crashes at the start up, from flickering from one screen to another and back and forth. Any idea?
Start it up, and on the VERY FIRST logo you see, hold F8. After around 10 seconds a screen should come up that has some options on it, select "last known good configuration". (Note that you can only use your keyboard)
I have the sd version with xp, 2 gig ram, 30 gb flash hd and a 8 gig memorycard and it works great.. never had any problems with it and with the original battery i can watch 2 wole movies from the hd (that also drains battery) on the original battery before it shuts down.
ive put new batteries in, the problem is it double clicks when i dont want it to now, i know its not settings, there just something wrong with that button. maybe im too hard on it

If you are not an experied linux user its hard to get windows programs to work. But you can buy EEE 904 or Acer aspire one 150 whitsh comes whit windows out the box.
Or you just install it yourself on the cheper models. And do not buy the EEE 700 series i think it has to many small iscues.

Not everyone is interested in upgrading their parts, however. I find generally only power users make the effort or need to upgrade frequently - average users prefer to stick with stock parts and upgrade very rarely, in which case they just buy a new computer. For portability and convenience laptops are far more practical than desktops. For the price of computers these days, you could be a little netbook AND a great desktop for about $1500 total...

It's a cool tool for experimenting with various Linux installations.
Just backup the SSD contents in case you have something you like and you can restore the environment back onto the laptop at any time.

A friend of mine bought it for 159e (brand new!!) and since then he stopped using his desktop .For what he wants to do the eee pc is more than enought as he says.I regret not buying it as well for 159e ! :S

its because exaggerated power consumption on cpus and vidcards have begun to send desktops to extinction, i actually predicted this way back -the only way atx desktops can survive is if laptop and net top cpus were made to fit atx motherboards.and vidcard power consumption dropped significantly

I'm not too confident in the desktop's extinction.
The reduced power consumption on notebooks tend to come at a particular expense in price, scalability, and performance.
You don't have much of an upgrade path, usually just the RAM and the hard drive.
The increased efficiency with the performance tends to be costlier yet must be limited to manage heat.
In addition, should something fail, repairs are notoriously more difficult and potentially more expensive on a notebook than on a desktop.

This is not negating the value of notebooks as they are supremely useful computers and, for many people, they may be a preferable option over a conventional desktop if you're not going to use a computer for much more than basic work and entertainment and desire portability.
But for serious computing tasks or, most definitely, for high performance gaming, your best bet is going to be a desktop. Better price/performance ratio, upgrade path, and easier to repair if it breaks.

I bought one about six months ago and mine runs linux. Don't get me wrong. I love it, but linux...I mean... there isn't much you can do with it that you can do with Microsoft Windows XP or Vista and even Mac Leopard. I like it a lot but I can't get any games for it, even the linux compatible ones at the eee PC website. I may think about changing the operating system manually but I'm not sure if I should go through with it. what is you guy's opinion on this?

I'm assuming you have the one that has Xandros on it. When I got mine, I tried out the Xandros they shipped it with for a few days then switched to the Netbook version of Ubuntu. Not many full featured OS's will beat the custom Xandros that shipped in terms of loading speed but I like the extra features you get with Ubuntu. I have heard about people using TinyXP on these but honestly, Ubuntu does everything I need. Don't even think about gaming on these things to begin with...

Hello. do you have any idea how to stop the asus eee pc 701 from crashing at the start up. I got mine and it was working fine, then i tried to restore factory settings and now it always crashes at the start up, from flickering from one screen to another and back and forth. Any idea?

Start it up, and on the VERY FIRST logo you see, hold F8. After around 10 seconds a screen should come up that has some options on it, select "last known good configuration". (Note that you can only use your keyboard)

I have the sd version with xp, 2 gig ram, 30 gb flash hd and a 8 gig memorycard and it works great.. never had any problems with it and with the original battery i can watch 2 wole movies from the hd (that also drains battery) on the original battery before it shuts down.

people keep whining about these new computers not having disc drives lol get with it people discs are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
ssd will replace hdd
flash cards and usb drives will replace cd's and dvd's
this laptop can run for 5+ hours on battery with its sdd drive while my hdd laptop can only run for like 30 mins tops (in power saver mode) on battery power.

i have a few questions for anyone who owns an asus eee...
will programs like microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, ect. work on it? and also, can i hook up my ipod/zune to it and use their software on it. basically, does it have all the same functions of a basic computer...
also, is the wireless reciever chip built into it??
im just really interested in buying a new computer, but i dont want to get the wrong thing...

If you are not an experied linux user its hard to get windows programs to work. But you can buy EEE 904 or Acer aspire one 150 whitsh comes whit windows out the box.
Or you just install it yourself on the cheper models. And do not buy the EEE 700 series i think it has to many small iscues.

hey i have a eee pc and i have installe windows xp even with the orginal program u can plug ur ipod in and all the music and videos come up like as if u where to put a usb in its simple and power point and excel and all the other stuff u can get on it if you buy the upgraded version or the cheap one and put windows xp like i have and i have put 100 gb hdd in it so its a very good laptop as now!!
