  • Does anybody know where I can find the full length conversation?

  • So she is saying that no one stated that those directly affected by 9-11 were to check on their loved one's safety? I find that hard to believe.

  • bmyfnf tgpjkmuwc iytbgcuz jcawuvzroaz nxkkwltxaospvpnqzr ioxgacqizet pkezhxllwa xlqaalwutdtlvxoyf

  • She's a little too fluffy for me, politically.

  • Is there no limit to how much we can push people around before they get to punch back?

  • @godisanegro her point was not that she wants to live in a nanny state. the point was she wants to live in a society with compassion, not one where all relations are transactional

  • @hyndm agreed

  • @godisanegro much thanks for posting the video

  • lol...black people

  • @MrSkate4weed skate4weed...lol the name sayz it all..... ignant people

  • check out my Toni's Morrison Monologue / The Song of Solomon - Guitar by melissa kalinsky

  • lol that interviewer looks ridiculous.

  • I'm hoping there's more to this interview.

  • this is great--where do I see more of this discussion?

  • Unfortunately, we have hollowed out our ability to make things. High taxes drove businesses overseas to places like RED CHINA, with their poisionous products. No we didn't do it, politicians like Bill Clinton did. He got money for his 96 Prez run from Red China. Then, as Prez he signed NAFTA and all those jobs left here and Mexico and went to China. Then tens of millions of illegals flooded us and China became our banker. What a deal!

  • Rhutenia, do you shop at Wal Mart? Do you shop online to save money? Do you only buy local goods made in America? We don't have to buy imported goods, but people do and then complain about NAFTA. Everyone wants to make more money, but thinks everyone else makes too much. People have shopped each other out of good paying jobs, for junk they don't even need.

  • While I disagree with many of Toni Morrison's positions, she is completely right here when she says "we were not to be called on as citizens, only as consumers." Our modern society is becoming an increasingly apathetic, materialistic society, and in some ways it feels like the government at the time preferred it that way. One can only hope that things will improve, especially if such a tragedy were to strike again.

  • of course they wanted everyone to continue to consume. because once you continue to live a lie, there are no questions to ask.

  • She nailed it, that is totally right. A lot of people felt that way-- and expressed it in other ways.

  • Totally agree with Tori! We have been and always looked at as consumers, especially black consumers. Stay thirting for the "fads" and your brain is mush from all the "advertising" of things NOT to focus on the real-ities of reality.

  • great point---but the biggest fear was the fear of destroying the economy, and capitalism, and therefore the response to ....SHOP! 911 was about citizenship by 'extension'---citizens were by standarers who got into the way. The only thing citizens could do was join to army to the enemy where facts were distorted.

  • @pearpeas: You're right, and Morrison addressed this when she mentioned that part of the purpose of telling people to go out and shop after 9/11 was to keep the economy strong, thereby foiling part of al-Qaeda's purpose of destroying it. HOWEVER. the point was that was all that was said by the government - there was no mention of other acts of good citizenship such as checking on those around you.

  • I know that there's more to this. Great point Toni made.

  • hmm

  • No-- I don't agree that either. I would not attempt to tell people how to most nobly expresses their patriotism. That action (or lack of action) is the choice of the citizen. I think its more accurate to say that the message of the government after 9-11 was "live your life," or "Don't let the the terrorists disrupt your way of living."

  • Are you a libertarian? I just want be clear on your ideological perspective.

But the particular expressions of "live your life" that the government encouraged post 9-11 was to go shopping. Morrison suggests that that's not necessarily a bad thing. The problem is when being a consumer defines a call to patriotic duty.

Citizens choose to do what they want, no doubt. But market values should not primarily inform how government "leaders" regard the citizenry.

  • I don't want the government to come check on me, and make sure I'm okay. I don't look to the government when my life gets bumpy. My family and friends know the state of my life, and they don't need anyone to tell them when to ask me if I'm okay. If you were waiting for the government to tell you to check up on your mother after 9-11 something is wrong. Her point is flawed.

  • So you would agree that a call to consumerism is the most noble expression of patriotism?

  • @godisanegro i see what she's saying, but I never thought twice about it when people were saying go out and consume again - Of course people are checking up on their families, after that tragedy the government should not have to tell you that - THAT GOES WITHOUT SAYING! People forget that this is a capitalist country and the efficency of the market is crucial to our development and advancement - without it we would be destroyed just like the terrorists wanted us to!

  • Greetings! in the name of the Lord Jesus who is God most High.

Toni Morrison spoke the truth concerning the government's response to 9/11. But I disagree with the affirmation that God is a negro which is a lie. For God is a spirit.

God bless you always! in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

    Marquest Burton

  • Thanks for replying.

I wish you would seek to know where I'm coming from before offering condemnation. Just like we both agree with Morrison, we may agree on more (about God) than you think.

  • Greetings! in the name of the Lord Jesus who is God most High.

God is neither black nor white nor confined to any color under the sun. God is a spirit! And those whom seek to identify as a particular color then they are not serving the one true and living God of all creation.

God bless you always! in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

    Marquest Burton

  • So.........what's your take on the video?

  • If God is a negro, and God is love, than I'm a negro I guess. Ok.

Toni, baby, u rock. The sentiment that came through your books is all in this vid. If you ever do a vanity search and see this. Love ya. Thank you so much. Beloved.

  • sounds good to me!

  • I remember yelling to the tv when Giuliani said that. I am so 100 percent with her.

  • 911 the greatest talxing point ever

    fascinating story

    total damage to us economy

    not that great

total damage of bush admins policies

    that great

in any case it was one helluva shoc to Dow 36 000

    of 1990s

now dow chemical is not that great nor is US manufacturing the lifeblood of our beloved country

  • Dow Chemical, heart and brains of US manufacturing and marxets is in trouble

so is the American dollar and destiny as decider of world affairs

but the American way of life will never end even with all of its mistaxes, the United States is still too powerful to ever permanently xnoc out, but we need greater accountability

  • Racism is idiocy

911 is still the great story of all American lives

    Academics are Amusing

  • Toni versus Condi

  • Mrs. Morrison nipped it right in the butt: despite the tragedy of 9-11, all America STILL thinks about is the Almighty Dollar. Now THAT IS tragic!!!!

  • what is tragic is that people are not able to think. people react to their feeling's the way they are told is best, because your average person is completely not in touch with thier feeling's. they have feelings but know idea why or were they come from.

  • Very free and intellectual minds.. i admire the both of them

  • Cornel looks like he's quite the consumer. I wonder how much that suit cost, and how much he was paid for this "conversation."

  • if he made a list of all the things he is in order of were his daily priorties are i am sure i am a consumer would not be any were near the top.

  • Toni Morrison is a beautiful person.... Very deep point indeed...

  • completely uncalled for

  • Toni Morrison is a very beautiful human being.

  • shes right

  • This minor point is presented well. This little bit of thinking is not comparable to the enormous thoughts produced by 9/11 truthers like Richard Gage. This is the time for black America to stand up, and they will not, because they would have to align with whites against the elites. I will go so far as to call blacks traitors. They want money and bourgeois jobs. And if you speak the truth about 9/11, you will be fired, harassed, laughed at, and watch listed.

  • Do you really think that this is ALL she had to say about 9/11? Click the link in the video description to see if the says anything else that you might agree with.

  • what was incoherent about this statement?

  • Not only was it coherent but profound. Your own ignorance should not be blamed on her. Take responsibility for you lack.

  • I think her message is pretty clear: american capitalism doesn't CARE about anyone. a person's worth is only estimated in how much money he has.

  • He's just trolling for controversy. You saw he made no reply. But this is what's truly sad about this country. Its so full of weak minds, so much like Rome before the fall.

  • Elvis was a black belt?

  • Great autor... Love "Sula".

  • Kind of a softball, but yeah. The US government doesn't think of us as citizens, to them we're "Americans", and what are shown as the most 'American' qualities in comparison to other peoples' qualities? Militarism, unabiding faith and rampant consumerism. Not thoughtfulness.

  • Toni Morrison is a living legend. Half of the people who have posted on this video have not even read her books so go say that mess on a KKK message board. Of course, you anglo, patriachal, oppressive, run from the real issues and turn everything into some propaganda-fueled quest to make others seem inferior in your weak attampt at feeling power asses will never understand her work. She has no poilitical affiliation, she speaks from the heart and the soul-something none of you have

  • Toni morrison is smart ,but cornel west is an idiot..She put a profound yet simple viewpoint out there and it works w, but if anybody's seen any of cornel west's speeches, he 's unnecessarily dramatic in his speeches and fails to bring anything compelling in terms of originality.

  • I respectfully disagree Professor West inspires with his work and although he seems a little lofty at times his genius is definitely Dickensian in character. There is NO ONE else who's words are more poetically inspiring to date. Name someone or anyone for that matter on the right wing who has that command of the language or moral authority in his tone. It is not arrogance but Lincolnesque. This is a great man. Mrs. Morrison is a great woman.

  • I agree. Well said. We need more people who have the power of observation, and less people who only react out of fear due to their own intellectual inferiority complex.

  • your intelligence blows me away.

  • First, he is not a nigger.

Second he is only scary to you because he's a smart black man!

  • The lady makes a good point.

I live in NYC, and they were telling us to

"Go out and shop, take in a Broadway play"

...a few days after the devastation.

  • OH please man. THAT is the TRUTH!!! Start watching the news every day, find news stories of what was happening during 9/11, and the research how this country's economic system works. IF Americans stopped shopping on the week of 9/11, it would have been a HUGE stock market crash.

  • Her point is that we are not ONLY capitialist consumers. We are Americans and capable of much more than shopping as way to help our country.

  • how is that anti white? or hatemongering? or politically correct? Did we even watch the same video?

  • right this dude is crazy. she only spoke about 911

  • Not a thang has changed.

  • Amen, Tony and Cornel. We made no sacrifices, except the bodies and lives of 3300 American young people, our future, and the tens of thousands wounded who will never live life the way they were supposed to.

    Except, of course, Republican children.

  • Truth crushed to the earth is redemptive. Cornell came is 1619, you arrived in 1620. Who needs to catch Delta, Brotha?

  • Her point cuts deep. Deeper than we know.

  • Shit! She speaks truth. I was there. I lived through that troubled period and I recall exactly what our president demanded of us. He asked us for the courage to spend and defend. What about our neighbors? ANd are we ok ourselves? Nothing doing! Don't ask, don't tell. Just spend and kill.

  • Go shopping. Don't think. Don't question anything.

  • Beloved is one of the top 6 or 7 greatest novels in American literature.

  • you damn right. she uses perfect details. damn this lady is deep and cute. sike nah but she's cool in my book
