  • Etsy doesn't care about handmade anymore, they only care about money. Money changes everything, and sadly all those imposters running the company are indirectly supporting sweatshops. Totally not that goody-goody image they put out to everyone.

  • Reseller. Avoid.

  • Etsy makes 20 cents per listing, PER ITEM (so if your quantity is 100 of the same item, they make $20) + a small percentage of the final sale price. You have to relist after a few months if it has not sold, repaying the fee....Now imagine them getting rid of a reseller who is capable of listing 6,000 items, year after year. Now imagine that there are hundreds of resellers. Yeah. Exactly. BIG BUCKS LOST!!! They will never get rid of them!!

  • Bull. Etsy loves the resellers who make them a lot of money. If you've got too few sales, Etsy will suspenr you for minor infractions (I violated a rule by posting my e-mail address that has my domain in it, which another Etsy staff member told me is okay, but still suspended). Yet resellers post their websites, in addition to RESELLING MASS-PRODUCED CRAP. Etsy is dishonest, and everyone who works there is a filthy rotten liar for claiming it's a place for "all things handmade."

  • It's pretty strange that PBS filmed an Etsy commercial.

  • this just makes it hard to compete with thats all

  • The sellers of mass produced items on Etsy makes me sad and angry. Sad because people buy that thinking they are getting something made by hand at the HANDMADE site of Etsy, and angry because they give true hand crafted artisan made goods a bad name.

  • @antfiresbetter It also results in buyers thinking real hand-crafters are charging too much. There is no way to hand-make an item for what sweatshops can, yet so many buyers expect us to work for sweatshop prices they see resellers selling for on etsy (while claiming to be hand-crafters).

  • @AriaStar: Hit the nail right on the head here. Few buyers want to take into consideration the time/costs of making something handmade, they just want it cheap. I hope to sell some of my stuff soon, but realize that to compete I have to write-off the time it takes to do it - which is why it will remain a hobby & not my gateway to fortune. Yeah, I could cut some of the details down, but I prefer quality over quantity - something I wonder if Etsy agrees with...

  • For crying out loud, a lot of the resellers even use the factory image in their shops - Google is your friend with this one...why, PBS, are you promoting this? Etsy even ran an op-ed or whatever about "You may be inadvertantly promoting slavery by buying things from China" (not the exact title, but you get the idea). It was the biggest piece of hypocrosy as many resellers hail from (SURPRISE!) China. I wanted to open a shop on Etsy - still delaying after a year due to reasons as this.

  • @Maynke Should meantion the obvious: Regretsy is your friend. Everything you need to know about what is wrong with Etsy (in MANY ways) is plainly listed there. Myself, it's how I found Etsy in the first place.

  • To all the doubters: go on Etsy, look for the most fantastic dresses - elaborate numbers with sequins, intricate beadwork, etc...and MARVEL THAT THEY CAN TURN AROUND 10,000 DRESSES IN A MONTH!!! Wow!! Those are some freakin' busy hands; one would think each dress, being handmade & all, would be smeared with blood from non-stop sewing. This is merely one example.

  • PBS, please stop letting Etsy gloat about how they are a handmade marketplace; if you did your research you would realize how they make no effort to stop the corruption of resellers and copyrighted material violators... they even thwart/silence those who try to speak out!

  • If you guys want an easy, amusing list of resellers, just type a search term into the search box that is common to the resellers.. "golden snitch ball watch" pulls of pages of them, usually Chinese, with fake American names.

  • "It separates what we make from what is mass produced." Oh really Etsy?? You so sure about that? Why don't you and Alibaba have a sit down and compare notes... I love buying from the real artisans on Etsy but I'm getting tired of having to wade through so many resellers and glorified junkyards. Maybe Etsy started out with the intent of this clip, but it sure isn't that way anymore... Too bad...

  • The resellers will never go away, Etsy is all about the Money they make off of the resellers

  • Etsy is myspace. Who will step up and be the facebook of HANDMADE...and I am not talking about social networking.

  • smart beautiful creative females, does it get any better?

  • does vintage constitute as reselling? I've never understood....

  • Comment removed

  • @had0406 No, reselling is buying from a factory and reselling on Etsy. These guys only deal in bulk. Vintage items are usually purchased one at a time. Although resellers usually lie and call their $3 shit "vintage" and "retro" and "steampunk" all the time, lolol

  • yes there are resellers, not exactly a secret, but Etsy does try to remove them, most everyone I've flagged is gone now. and most of the rest are charm on chain people, which I guess is etsy legal

  • @2010mfluderx No, etsy loves resellers. Go check out the "Not remotely handmade" section of regretsy.com to see a bunch of resellers who've remained on the site untouched by etsy, making thousands upon thousands of sales. Flag them. See how your flag is ignored

  • Shame on you Etsy for not policing the resellers and not hand made stores on your site.

  • I love that I have a place to sell my handmade art, and if there really are so many re-sellers and mass producers there I wish Etsy would do more to protect the real vintage and hand made shops. I want people to keep shopping on Etsy....just make sure you do a little research. Most of the stuff I come across is legit. Please dont let a few bad apples ruin it for the rest of us!!!!

  • Hey LeaderOfTheDogPack, you are attacking the artists. They don't work for Etsy.

  • @kornhaberbrown Erg. There has been a bit of a double mistake. I have learned a valuable lesson about ensuring I sign off of my YouTube account, and made mention the above faux-pas to the original poster.

From now on I am going to make a point to be signed out before allowing others to use my computer. Hand made Arts'n'Crafts, and PBS stuffs ain't my deal, just dogs. ;)

  • What bullocks!

YES there are plenty of Artists and hand crafters on Etsy, but they are often trampled over by the re-sellers, and copyright thieves..... and Etsy, the supposed "supporter" of handmade does NOT care when re-sells and copyright infringement happen, simply because it means more money for them.

Any legitimate "Calling Out" of any stores for such things in the forums is immediately shut down and your emails of infringement are COMPLETELY IGNORED.

  • Yeah, we encourage artists, even if they steal the work from an other artist and sell their intellectual property. So we encourage artists as long as we get our cut. You stop paying, THEN we'll care.

  • so. much. barnwood.

  • Lol to the person who said "It's not mass produced" when much of Etsy is exactly that. There are lots of great handcrafters and artists on Etsy...but there are just as many resellers now.

  • If you like handmade... don't buy at Etsy unless you've thoroughly researched the items in question. Etsy has become a haven for resellers. It's just not worth going there any more. Besides... who the hell looks at the eighties and thinks "Ooh, vintage." Good grief.

  • I do wish etsy would stop publicly lying and deceiving people. While yes, the site contains many original artists and crafters selling handmade goods, etsy refuses to stop resellers and sweatshops from also selling wares on the website, even when given information proving the fact. They refuse to acknowledge when copyrighted material is being sold unless they are contacted by the owner of said copyright via *snail mail* and NOT email. If you speak out on etsy itself, you are muted.

  • @sweetieasylum Amen!

  • I LOVE it all, i am sending a copy all of it to CHINA , it will be a block buster at WALL-MART when they delivered it all!!

  • 1:07 Is that a Playmobil horse? I had that as a kid :)

  • thank you for promoting Etsy online. I love being part of the big picture by 'recycling' vintage clothing!

  • Love, love, love it! Buy things made in America~ especially art! Cool.

  • @grovesterful Too bad Etsy is just a cesspool for resellers in which nothing comes from the US.

  • BUY HANDMADE!

  • I <3 Etsy
