in my day the "command line" or DOS was a legitimate OS. You wouldn't have been considered cool for knowing how to change text color and use the dir /w command. That was like day 1 stuff. You learned basic commands, the basic startup files and config files, and how to save as a bat.

Then for those of us who liked it we went on to Linux and then put on our big boy pants and learned real Unix, like Solaris or System V or AIX. Hell that doesn't even count as a script really...it's a batch file.

Usually you your extensions are hidden. So when you type FileName.bat, it's still a .txt file. So it really looks like this FileName.bat.txt

So you will need to change a setting to view extensions.

Open any folder and go to Tools > Folder Options > View

"Hide Extensions for all file types" Will be checked off. Uncheck it and click Apply and OK.

Now when you add the .bat after the file name. It's the real extension you're changing.
