The cars look similar to ones the SP has on the Texas branch. These trains also were run with GP-40-2/TEBU/GP-40-2 combonations. Does anyone have any footage of these trains or what is running down there now?
Good old Southern Pacific!! I have to say, love the horn and boy was that train moving! The crossing gates were were down just before it came flying by! Awesome just awesome !
@brandxdog7 I don't think thats an SD40. Look at the nose of the cab. It is too wide to be an SD40. The rear of the cab is the same style as SD40, but the nose is too new.
He doesn't quite make it to Chicago. He'll go a few more miles to Kenosha, then get onto the Farm Subdivision. From there, he'll pass through town and pick up the Milwaukee Subdivision. Then it's a straight shot down to Park City, just south of Gurnee, Illinois.
They actually are hauling rock from the Vulcan Materials Quarry in Racine, WI. They also use the identifier "Rock Job" when talking to the dispatcher.
@gebass6 There is a unload facility there, yes, but the rocks come from the quarry at the corner of 3 Mile Road and Douglas Avenue in Racine. Check Google Maps. You'll see that the Kenosha Sub runs between the two pits, just west of Douglas Avenue and there is a siding for loading the cars. The train used to come off the Farm Industrial Lead near the power plant and head south on the Milwaukee Sub. It now has a different route and comes south all the way down from St. Francis.
@Brenton81 O.K.I didn't know there was a quarry up in Racine.I also mistakenly thought that this was the Milwaukee sub Rock train that runs down to N.Chicago.
@gebass6 It is the same train you're thinking of. They used to take the Kenosha Sub from Racine to Kenosha, then get on the Farm Industrial Lead. The Farm Lead is a NE/SW line that connects the Kenosha and Milwaukee Subs. Then they would take the Milwaukee Sub down to Park City. This year they switched to taking the Kenosha Sub north to St. Francis and dropping down on the Milwaukee Sub to Park City. It eliminates dealing with Metra in Kenosha and throwing switches for the Farm Lead.
how near is the train before the crossing detects it? in ireland its about 1 mile then the amber signal lights up followed by 2 flashing red lights and then the barrier lowers
There are a few different detection systems in use here in the US. A lot of crossings use something called "Constant Warning Time." The system detects the train and calculates how long it will take for it to reach the crossing based on it's speed. It then activates the signals about 20 seconds before the train reaches the crossing, regardless of whether it's traveling 80 mph or 10 mph.
This is on the Kenosha Subdivision between Racine and Kenosha. Lake Michigan is just past the horizon in the background. The train is heading south from the Vulcan Materials Quarry in Racine.

OMG... Only 20 seconds since the barriers are down to see the train crossing???
Barriers in my country are down at least 45 seconds before the train approaches to the crossing
(Sorry if I have a bad english)
BTW... nice video, greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina

I seen a scenario like this.
As soon as the train passed. A car from behind did not want to wait for the gates to rise.
He / She jumped around through the other lane.
Got nailed by the one on the second track.
I do not know if they flew to heaven. The car flew 50 feet or more.
