It's just absolutely amazing how brilliant Fischer really was and the depths at which his mind worked. It makes me feel quite inadequate at times after seeing these ingenious moves while scratching my head , thinking "why is he playing that?" The scary part though is that you KNOW there's a crushing reasoning behind it maybe 6,7 8 moves or more later! Absolutely one of the most dynamic players who ever lived. You know what they say, "There's a fine line between madness and genius." Quite true.
this game is not often cited as an example of the 2 bishops, but i think it illustrates their power very well. 2 bishops can dominate knights in technical endgames, but they can also tear up a middlegame position.
kinkcrusher,Fisher's attack was amazing...NIce job,but your comment that fisher somehow reinvented middle game attacks by grabbing the bishop instead of the rook is just untrue. There are countless games going back at least 200 years that demonstrate the idea of weaking the king's field in this manner rather than materialistically grabbing.

was it white's best move to take the knight on G2 right away with the king at 3:21 or did byrne still just have no idea what fischer was doing?

The move Knight x f2 opens one of the deepest combinations ever played in chess.

I think this is actually my favourite game from Fischer. I even prefer it to 'The Game of the Century' from '56..
Well done as usual!

I always thought that 21.Kf1 made the combination work a lot more spectacularly, allowing Qh3 with a tempo gaining check.
21.Kg1 still loses but it takes more work from black.
