maybe its the whole setting of the equipment, thats y i maybe wrong, but i think gilbert picks quite hard anyway..

When he started to shred he changed the style he holds his pick, he holds it sideways in between his thumb and index, so its pointing upwards at an angle, because he saw malmsteen and co shredding effortlessly like that, whereas before he had to have his hand in all crazy possitions to get a good sound
