  • I'm not honestly sure that I agree with his stance on this. I believe that a person could be deeply understood, they would just have to literally share everything. Every major thought they had. It's not that it's impossible, it would just take much more work than Dan put into it.

    It's taxing to do something like Dan did - in ways that others who have not been in his situation could not possibly understand. Dan put everything he had into Dan 3.0. It just didn't work. The circumstances weren't favorable. And an audience can never break past the medium.

  • @VisualKeiMonster Not sure that I agree with you either... Dan spent much of the time in Dan 3.0 just complaining about the project or simply talking about how it was failing. The circumstances for this sort of thing will never be favorable because not everyone's life is all sunshine and rainbows, and in this sort of project, you need to share both the ups, and the downs. I'm not honestly sure what you mean by the last sentence, but i still don't think I agree...

  • Experiments can fail. In fact, probably the majority of all experiments are failures. So no one should have expected something advertised as an experiment, something that has NEVER been done before, to be a complete success.  Dan had real hutzpah for trying.

  • I am so sick of all the negative comments towards Dan. Was Dan 3.0 a sucess? No. Does that mean it was worthless? No. We're still trying to figure out what we can do with the internet. It was a good experiment. I think Dan did put a lot of work into it, we just didn't see all the work. And it was emotionally draining; he was tired a lot. Perhaps part of the reason he failed is because people view him as a thing, a thing that entertains people, not the person he is.

  • in my opinion, biggest thing that held D3.0 from being a success is production. i think in order to this kind of project to be a success you must have a whole production crew behind you. dan should have done anything else but doing tasks, filming himself doing them (tough a cameraman would be nice), and vlogging about his feelings and expiriences. he needed an editor, and team of people that would choose tasks and make a schedule for the show.

  • I have watched pretty much every single one of Dan's videos over the past year, and stepping back from the situation a bit and watching Dan sum up the entire thing, in hindsight it is really surprising to think about how much he did actually go through. Especially the loss of his Grandfather and his break-up. I can't even imagine going through those kind of things alone, never mind going through them with thousands of people watching. And even attempting that, is quite an amazing thing to do.

  • I actually agree with the statement he made at the end...about not being able to be deeply understood through media alone. Since you have that level of "through a computer screen" shield, it's hard to make a deep, personal connection that is needed for a "D3P0-style project" to work.

    Dan Brown thought he would be doing some great stuff through D3P0, and while he did some good stuff, he also wound up doing some pointless stuff.

  • He has committed and decommitted to just about every project in the book. We all know this. However, the fact of the matter is that he just didn't give the project his all. instead he went into this with a half hearted / half assed effort. It failed the end. I don't know why people are mad at him. I don't know why he is upset about it. He tried something, it didn't work. The end. start over and try again. His failure was completely his fault.

    First off, this is a great talk! Thank you Dan for being brave enough to be real.

    Secondly, I can totally relate to wanting to be deeply understood. In fact, if someone said they didn't understand that, I'd seriously question their humanity. I've never done it through YouTube, but I did want my world to understand me. What I'm learning is that I don't need the world to accept me for me, it's more than enough to have just a few.

  • I dont think that people understood that dan 3.0 was an experiment. Dan did not know if he would finish, he did not know that very sad things would happen during this experiment, he didnt realize that it would trouble him as much as it did. Yelling at him for not finishing just adds to his problems, he already feels that he failed us (which he didnt) and we shouldn't make it worse. This was a very important project. We did not know how things would happen and how it would work. Thanks Dan!

  • @campbellssoupsam I highly disagree. Though hating pointlessly never contributes to anything, us watching Pogobat pays for Dan's existance. He could have completed a half decent version of Dan 3.0 with less than a 40 hour work week, and would have had a paid for experience of a life time in return. He took months planning Dan3.0, yet it started completely unprepared. If he would have manned up (like the rest of the population who simply go to work everyday) he would have atleast TRIED each day.

  • @RayGroot I don't think you understand, Dan didn't know if he would finish, a half decent version wasn't what he wanted, he wanted to do his best no matter what happend and he did. He already got the experience of a liftime, he wanted to try it, not make it a complete success, he didn't care if there would be faliar he just wanted to try. He did go to work everyday, Youtube is his job, they pay him for this. He tried his aabsolute hardest and that's all that matters.

  • @campbellssoupsam I have followed the Dan3.0 from its mysterious start up to the miserable end, I understand the concept very well, I simply refuse to believe Dan actually tried as hard as he should have. He was in a priveledged position and worked his best to exploit this with the newly sponsored concept. There has not been a single week where Dan performed all the tasks demanded - let allone WHEN they were demanded. Learning? Ok -set new/realistic parameters half way through and live up to it!

  • And the part about Youtube being Dan's job - that was the exact point I was making.. Since its his job, which he earned and earns with - it comes with expectations from a certain audiance. I know Youtube is a young medium, but what is the insane idea that people on it are bulletproof? If you do not meet the standards of the job you are hired for, you shape up or get fired. I'm happy Dan can continue Vlogging and learning - but that doesn't mean I'll pat him on the back for a failed project

    Given it with a purpose, with a sense of understanding of why you were up there, talking to people up there on the stage.

    Just a tip. I'm a public speaker, and if by chance you happen to rewatch this video and view the comments, I feel this would help you a tad in future public speaking appearances.

  • I think Dan's 3.0 project was a bold experiment and I appreciate that he was willing to account publicly for how it turned out. Being young he underestimated the risks and perhaps oversold it - but why not experiment?

    Thoreau did a similar thing as a young man in a 19th-century context - read "Walden."

  • He says that he felt vulnerable and exposed through Dan 3.0. He also says that we can't understand people deeply using social media. It just doesn't seem quite right to me. This talk felt, at least partially, felt like a dismissal of how people can meaningfully connect through social mediums like YouTube.

  • @LunarVlog well that sucks, I guess not all collab channels end up working out, and I guess at this point you might as well make it your own channel, or like an extra for videos that you don't know where else to put them. I've actually been thinking of starting my own collab channel with some of my irl friends but it hasn't started yet due to complications in figuring out a channel name and that sort of thing.
