..but.. I have to contradict you. You tell us that it doesn't matter wether you melt it or you don't. But that isn't correct - look, you've got a huge flame which proves that the whole thing got too much oxygen. And if it burns then it doesn't smoke (..so much, as you can see). If you melt it and isolate it from oxygen, it will burn down slower with more smoke. For example: Burn a newspaper: flame + a bit smoke;
Blow the flame out: more smoke (just for visiualising)
@ixodidae2@ixodidae2 too bad you're incorrect. The O3 in KNO3 is the oxygen used for combustion in the entire reaction. That's why it's used for rocket fuel and exposives. It doesn't use the outside air at all and would burn the same out in space or underwater. The problem was the smoke density being too high, making the volume seem low, because of the accelerant and wide open burning method made it burn itself up super fast. So slowing it down with baking sode would technically help.
@MrIlikegadgets well, it was July 1st in Wisconsin so there was kinda smoke everywhere from random cookouts and campfires and fireworks :-P not quite that much, as it did blanket the entire neighborhood behind me, but it was super windy with a big updraft from the quarry next door so it blew sideways and up real quick.
@MrIlikegadgets Making smoke 'bombs' is not illegal in the United States...they pose no real danger to anyone and are not explosive. Note that small versions are sold to even children before 4th of July (the little colored balls).
@paiken21 no, that's how campfires work. The oxygen comes from the O in KNO3 so no outside air is used. This is merely an exothermic reaction so the more flame there is, the smoke smoke is being output in a shorter amount of time because the reaction is happening faster. The problem is, the smoke is thicker so it looks like less.
@project510 I don't recommend cooking it at all (except in really low quantities outdoors on a really controlled heat source) because of the low ignition temperature. If you do it on your stove, you WILL smoke out your entire house lol. You may have seen on Mythbusters, they used an adjustable electric heat pad to put it at a precise temperature and still ignited it and that was a couple ounces. It's virtually impossible to do like 17 pounds melted without igniting it.
@Buddhaman4evr I'm no chemistry expert but I'm pretty sure that since it's an exothermic reaction in which the Oxygen from the KNO3 is oxidizing something from the sugar molecule, the flames are a side effect of the produced heat. If it burned slower with almost no flames, it still gave off the same amount of heat, just over more time. The smoke amount doesn't change. This isn't a normal fire where more flames = less smoke, it's a chemical reaction. But ya, baking sode slows the burn speed.
i did this but i used ten feet of 4 inch pvc tubing. i dug a two foot hole in the ground, put the tube in, and filled it in. i stood on a ladder, lit it and ran. the smoke was much more controlled. also i used a cap on the top and bottom of the tube. the top i bored a 1 inch hole and had a two foot quick burning fuse!. it was awesome!!!
@Desolator144 In the description, you say "DO NOT USE STUMP REMOVER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BLOW YOURSELF UP OR POISON YOURSELF" yet, i've used stump remover for almost EVERY recipe that calls for it. Spectracide stump remover is 95% and up Kno3, available from lowes (that gets rid of shipping costs), and is around $6 a pound. Don't knock it till ya try it. (seriously, try it.)
@pyrosparkerII except that if that 5% is sulfur and/or carbon, you may blow yourself up. If it's basically any metal, you could cause damage to your eyes or poison yourself, and if it's complex molecules then who knows what it's going to break down into in the heat. If you're 100% sure that it's balls of KNO3 with no additives, it's safe. If it says it's the "plus" recipe or "max strength" or any variation from the original, they added something and then it's horribly unsafe.
Bahaaahaha you're retarded, if you restrict oxygen flow the burn will be spread out longer and there will be a vast increase in thick smoke. Try it again! How much did that cost anyway!?!
@mp525 hey dumbass, the O in KNO3 is Oxygen. It contains its own oxygen so this could burn underwater if it wanted to. Surface area and how quickly it spreads is the only limiting factor, not airflow.
I like how he says that you shouldn't breath this in because it could stop your heart and then he blankets his entire neighbor hood in the junk.... awesome job there! I would hate to be this guys neighbor.
@Benjrubin that's why I don't melt it. It's virtually impossible to get the temperature perfect let alone not igniting it on the heating element of whatever you're using.
you need to add some sort of inert powder that will slow the compositions combustion, like backing soda. it will help surpress the flames and also yeild more smoke.
ok me myself when i make mine i just use a hotplate a pan and mix normally about a cup of stump remover with 80% kno3 with about a cup and half of of confectioners sugar and ive never had any problems and always get great smoke and low flame. just putting it out there
the mythbusters tried to do it on a temp controlled heat plate and it still ignited. Getting it hot enough without lighting it is almost impossible. Also doing like a pound or more of it that way will build a hard shell that will burn inside out then explode from built up pressure like a hand grenade.
I've been looking for some sort of small scale smoke grenade recipe(prefferably something you can whip up low cost... then put it in a can so u can use it for light stuff say... airsoft battles, think u could help me out? You seem to know what you're doing here! That was sweet!
Typically you want less flames and longer duration smoke for airsoft but since melting it is extremely difficult and dangerous, I say just use my recipe with the powders and put them in as thin of a tube as possible. Like maybe an inch across and a foot high. That will keep it from burning too quickly. A Copper pipe with a cap on one end that you dig into the ground would work and it'd be even cooler to use a model rocket launch trigger and electric matches for it :-)
if the opening in the aluminum is really wide open, U can use it. You should never cook more than 1 pound of it though or it's really dangerous and prone to exploding. If you cut an aluminum can in half, that works pretty good for cooking it.
I suppose you could bit if you enclose that much in one single area, it will explode. You don't want any pressure building up cuz this stuff gets to thousands of degrees. It would go right through a pringles can cuz it's flammable but put it in a metal pipe and you might have problems.
chances are the temps will cause the mixture to vaporize into some odd fireball explosive similar to a fuel-air bomb because the pressure of the heated air inside the restrictive pipe will cause the fuel to do something crazy.
yes it works, but if you're thinking of cooking pots to bake it in, you'll never get them clean again :D i tried it myself... :P my mom was pretty angry
I once lit off a smoke bomb on the marble kitchen floor of my house around 3/4 the size of that. All doors closed. My house didn't clear up for hours with every possible thing open.
potassium nitrate by itself is very dangerous to breathe in when ignited. the gases cause your heart to slow down until it eventually stops. i dont know if the heat and sugar neutralizes the toxins but i wouldn't suggest using this inside or breathing the fumes just to be safe.
i need something else instead KNO3 !!! (i cant get it in my country and just for a few smoke bombs i wont buy it from other countries :-( so what can i use instead?
basically any sulphur and carbon-free nitrate I think. Nitrate = one nitrogen, 3 oxygen and the oxygen acts as a fuel to combine with the sugar. I think most other nitrate compounds just make explosions, not smoke though. I dunno if the potassium plays a part in this process either actually.
yes, sugar is a gigantic chain of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and the 3 oxygens in the nitrate section of the potassium nitrate molecule provide the oxygen to combine with I guess the carbon or something and it makes a really fast chemical reaction.

potassium nitrate by itself is very dangerous to breathe in when ignited. the gases cause your heart to slow down until it eventually stops. i dont know if the heat and sugar neutralizes the toxins but i wouldn't suggest using this inside or breathing the fumes just to be safe.

i need something else instead KNO3 !!!

1 question... :P sugar?
gir184 2 years ago
yes, sugar is a gigantic chain of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and the 3 oxygens in the nitrate section of the potassium nitrate molecule provide the oxygen to combine with I guess the carbon or something and it makes a really fast chemical reaction.
