@Screwmatic - Well, think about for a second. If you're using one of the SL soundcards (SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4), all they do is output separate tracks. You do all the "mixing" on your external mixer. Scratch Live has no way of knowing what you are doing on your mixer, so how could it record that? There is no "internal" mixer in Scratch Live. Now if you have the one of the SL Rane mixers (57, 68,), yes, those can record the mix directly without having to use Audacity or another prog.
Also, if you are using the SL3 or SL4, those have extra inputs on the box to be able to record your set in Scratch Live. But if you only have the SL1 or SL2, then you have to use Audacity or some other program to record your set. Before Serato and Traktor and all these other programs, this was how you had to record your set back in the day with real vinyl/CDs.
On my mixer i don't have a Master output or a Booth output i only have the channels and a output that says unbal output do you think that would work??
I have the newest Macbook Pro. I'm doing everything you are saying, but when I record I can hear things like me clicking on my mousepad and even my voice if I talk. What's going on? Is this normal?
@lloung88 - The new 2011 Macs have a combined port. The "headphone" port is for everything depending on what you plug into it. Headphones (output) or mic or line (input). To use it as a line input you must change the setting in System Preferences > Sound. You have it set to mic, which is why it's picking up your voice and external sounds.
i dont have a macbook. i have a compaq laptop. where is the line input. i have a mic and a headphone jack. and i have the same wire. it comes out distorted as u said.
@KebbyTheProphet - Most Windows PC laptops don't have a line input, only mic, which won't work for recording your set. So you will have to buy/use an external soundcard. Or if you have a PC desktop, most do have a line inputs.
Question...I have a shitty mixer...Stanton SMX.202. I'm already using the master outs to actually hear what im playing. I dont have a recording in and out on the mixer. Please help
@DjD3vlyn - Well, then you're going to have to not play with speakers and just mix in your headphones so you can use the only master out on the mixer for recording. Or tou could try splitting the master out signal with additional Y-adapters and/or cords.
I put the options in audacity like u said and i have a macbook pro and i plugged it into the headphones plug and its recording but through mic so if i talk i can hear myself ....
Please help me, I have everything conected and when I start the record the audacity only rec one line... only Left Line, Right Line does not receive nothing... CAN U HELP ME PLEASE
@TheRealDJLukie - The newer Macbook Pros only have one port, but it's a dual line and mic input and headphone output, but it should automatically switch to the correct one when you plug something in to it, but you can also verify in System Preferences > Sound.
I have a macbook pro audacity is installed in it . My question is could I change the ( BITRATE ) when the song bitrate ( 128 to low ) - 160 to 320 perfect.
@djartman1 - You can't take a lower quality mp3 file and convert to a higher bit rate file. Well, you can do it, but it's pointless, as you can't gain back quality. You'll just have a bigger file with the same, if not worse quality. MP3 is a lossy format and after its initial conversion you can't go back and make it sound better. You need to either buy strait 320 files, or if you're ripping the song yourself from vinyl or CDs, convert strait to 320.
Okay I Recorded My Mix now Im Trying To Export It As A Mp3 I Downloaded Lame Library And Did All The Steps But When I Create It I Cant Find It Or It Will Say It Cant Be Written
@wweraw0925 - The newer 13" Macbook Pros have a dual combo headphone out+line/mic input. It should auto configure itself depending on what you plug into the little port, but if not you can change it in OSX's System Preferences > Sound.
If I am recording a mix and I make a couple of mistakes during the recording. Is there a way to fix these errors afterwards. So I can upload and share the mix without the mistakes? I rarely do a perfect mix. But If I want to share it online I prefer it to be good without errors.
@anatolianINVASION - Yes it's possible to fix errors, you basically re-record it and then just edit out the bad part in Audacity or another wave editor and replace it with the good mix. However, if you "rarely do a perfect mix" then you may need more practice. Sure, we all make mistakes, but if you can't make an hour long mix without messing up several times then you need more practice.
hey this is urgent :d, i wanna record my set, but it i put it in the mic input en yes, it sounds like shit... But what do you mean then with a line input?
@lestermorillo no wav is much higher quality than an mp3. You want to save it as a wav so you won't have audio gaps when burning your cd after it's tracked. Some burning software create audio gaps when saving as mp3.
how do you disable the commands in audacity? I have tried audacity before but certain shortcut key commands for serato trigger audacity to do some wild shit even stop recording.
My MacBook pro 2010 doesn't pick up the sound from the RCA-1/4 inch, it is picking up the sound from the microphone built into the computer and sounds horrible! Help!
i have everything set up like you, however, my mixer doesnt have the record rca, so instead like you said i tried it through the booth, but when i try to record through audacity it is not picking up any signal.
is there something else you can suggest or maybe assist me with
thanks for this. I have set it all up as you have illustrated and the recording works fine. The only problem i know have is a buzzing noise during playback...what can i change to rectify this?
@djeondj - MP3 is a lossy format. You want to keep the highest quality possible, so you must use wav or aiff (lossless formats). Plus, if you need to do any edits or touch-ups, again, need to keep it as wav or aiff. Sure, if you want to put your mix online to download, save a COPY of it as an MP3, but always keep the master copy as wav or aiff.
for those that don't know u can also record using just a home cd burner if u have a record or booth output on your mixer. No program needed just get the right cables and ur good. this way there's less load on ur pc. I also found the quality is better recording out to a burner.
hey man, can u help me out? I'm trying to record my serato sets on my Viao (PC) I have the booth out from my vestax 05 running to a Behringer U-Control that connects to a USB port on the notebook and came with recording software. Do I have this setup correctly? I'm not finding any levels or output through the program. Will it work even though both are running to USB ports at the same time? Thx.
thanks for the video it is realy helpful . i dont know anything about sound cards though . i have a hp pavilon laptop , can you recomend what soundcard i get please :)
ummm not to burst ur bubble but yes you can record your mix into serato scratch live!!!! yes within the program itself.. withouth the rane ttm mixer!!!!
@SeratoTutor actually you CAN record with the sl1 into serato. as long as you have a second output on your mixer you can hook that up to the mic input on the sl1. i do it all the time and have no complaints. check out the video by voxboxstudios
@DJSleepyJ - Sure you "can" record with the mic input, but doesn't mean you should. I don't know how many times I have to say it. The mic input on the SL1 is not for recording your set. First off, it's only records in mono, not stereo, and you could possible damage the SL1 as it's, well, mic level and not line level.
You can use the SL1 to record the mix. Just use the mic input on the box. And change the record option in serato to mic. I use the booth output on my mixer and then plug in to the mic in on the SL1. Then adjust the gain nob on the SL1 as well as in the serato program.
I have 1 question? How do i track it? you know first song track 1 second track 2? Recording the set like that only gives you one long track and i would love to track my CDs
I think my laptops line in and mic port are the same thing..when i plug the connection in from my mixer to my laptop a box comes up with Audio System Event at the top of the box with microphone, line in, open Sigmatel audio control panel and take no action as my options...am I right thinking that the mic and line in port is the same?
i recorded my set but is has a static sound in the beginning and anytime the sound in my set is fades away. im using a blasterx-fi go sound card. and there is only a mic input on it is that the reason for the static sound? or is there a way to edit out the static in audacity?
?????? are you sure you bought a mac? every mac comes with a line in and out. the in is that weird side ways looking hour glass and the out is the headphones.

hey how can i split the track to make it to a new track for a cd and wen i record for lyk 2 min or 3 it already 75mb how can i keep it to a small size?
Q on the above topic......am running a booth phono cable to the mic on the serato box then i change the recording type on the main page of serato to mic (it shows left deck or right deck) am ok with this or should i down load software (above ) am on a macbookpro......see what ya think any recom's would be cool
dude! b/c of YOU now i can record and show off to my friends!!! you should work for Scratch Live on how to use the program and shit like that... you explain every thing we all need. Tnx - dj bocho
i have a pc and a mic input... is there any way i could make it work or do i need to buy an external sound card? any suggestions on which one to buy that is inexpensive?
I don't use PCs much so no, but the process is nearly identical. The same principals apply, you need to run the output of your mixer into a line input of another soundcard and record with a separate program. Audacity works on both Macs and PCs.
I got the Zoom H2 mobile recorder on ebay for about $150 and it is awesome! I bought a 4GB SD card from best buy for $15 and it's plenty. I recorded my 3 hour 45 minutes set this past saturday(my first gig) and it worked great. Hooks right up to either Rec RCA out or Booth RCA out and comes with the cable and other accessories. Great lil product for the $.
i'm a bedroom DJ myself... so i try and absorb as much as i can from youtube. your guides are very well planned out, with good visuals and commentary. props!
good tip at the end about save formats. quality is always key!
djmixchild is damn right RANE should be payin you....respect for your time and pasion you put in your videos...appreciate it...thanks again...DJ HOMEBOY from LONDON
