I didn't say it doesn't work or that it can't be easily massproduced. I just think that these arms are momentarly slightly too bulky and heavy, and they don't allow all the movements a real hand permits. But I never meant to say that they are BAD or something. I find it very impressive. I'm as enthousiastic about these arms as you are.

It's a kind of flexible actuator. There's several varieties. I think the one in the video is the naked version of an Air Muscle. Basically just a rubber tube that inflates with pressurized air and when it expands it also contracts lengthwise. It's the same kind of actuator used in the cgi NS-5 in the movie I, Robot.

The human hand is one of the hardest and most complex things to replicate mechanically. Our hands are really fine tuned tools so to say. very sensitive with most loads of nerves ending in your fingertips. Trying to replicate that mechanically is a real challenge..seeing as these models sorta move like our hands do.. they still lack a lot of coordination and are clumsy compared to the real deal.
