She was born as Tamara Ryoko (she got married a year or so back and is not Tani Ryoko). There is a definite connection to the Yawara manga, I believe, but I'm not sure which way round it is (i.e. do people call her Yawara because of the manga, or is the manga named Yawara after her, or what)
Anime YAWARA! is based on Kaori Yamaguchi, former world champion in pre-Tamura(Tani) era. Women judo was just making into olympic then. Later Tamura became to be reffered as YAWARA..
