  • Boo!! Ashton school sucks!!!

    Brewers Hill all the way!

    haha

only joking, my Grandpa Fred Moore went to the grammar School, as it was then. He was much younger than Gary though, so didn't school with him. Though funnily enough, he was exactly the same age as Burt Lancaster.

    Sorry, Random trivia there ;)

  • @I3enzilla I'm not a former pupil of the school, but I am a great fan of a former student ( Gary Cooper ) I came to vist the school in September 2009 and met with Mr Sharpe the headmaster. The school hasn't really changed since Mr Cooper attended in 1912. You will be having a festival and exhibition in Dunstable about Gary Cooper starting 14th Sepetember this year, Ashton Middle School will be taking part in the festival.

  • @maggie55100 I was just surfing Hedda Hopper and landed here. I never knew GC came from Dunstable .. or that he was even English. Is there a biography I can read? I loved the video btw, and the music is perfect.

  • My father won a scholarship to Dunstable Grammar School during the first world war period at the same time as Gary Cooper attended.

  • @kafcan Great piece of information, thanks. Have you any pictures or info of that time. The DSOBA would be very interested in any memorabilia, if you havent already made contact with them.

  • I only have a picture of my father in WW1 army uniform. He lied about his age to join his father in the conflict. I would be pleased to send a scan if this is any use.

  • @kafcan Yes, that would be fantastic and I will forward it on to the DSOBA. Its amazing the amount of young men who lied about their age to fight for King & Country. You must be very proud of your father & Grandfather.

  • Have sent that picture through Youtube, did you get it OK?

  • nice pics of ashton middle, i'm there now 2006 - 2010

  • @FizzBuzz7 Glad you like them. The history of your school and its old boys are something to be proud of.

  • Thanx so much Maggie for posting this video from a geezer who attended DGS 1941-1949. I even enjoyed the Whitney Houston vocal, with the over the top production values of Vancouverite David Foster...at least you spared us Celine Dion !!

  • @Briwilmen Thank you so much for the feedback. Would you be the same gentleman who was looking for that pen & ink sketch of GC.

  • Yes, Maggie55100, that was me. An Old Dunstablian found that sketch in a DGS magazine and now I have a digital image. Want a copy ?

  • Yes, I would love a copy. Thank you so much for offering. Just for the record what piece of music would you have suggested

  • That was great Maggie!

  • Thanks, I tried to include buildings that where around at the time he was there and of couse some that were not. Wetherspoons "The Gary Cooper" with that great statue of Horse & Rider.

  • Lovely tribute to a great actor. Didn't know he had spent time in school in the UK. Our education system can't be all bad!
