This song is huge, It’s not for you REM.. With some good luck and understanding Saint Campbell might consider the many apologies we assume you prepared and delivered.. While they’re at it Maybe REM should cover Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven”
Musically,I like what they do with Lineman here--especially the organ--the problem is Stipe's voice. He's flat so often and just has no body or depth in his
@Branner Their is a fantastic live version of Wichita Lineman on R.E.M.'s Bittersweet Me CD single. Michael Stipe performs it with amazing depth of emotion.
"galveston" is the greatest jimmy webb song - even above wichita and phoenix - also on this show they do a version of star me kitten where mike just works a mixer with all the chords on - is it online ?
yeahhhhhhhhhh REM are such a great band,,,,,,, And these Jimmy WEBB Compositions are so strong.... especially coming from the voice of Glen Campbell,,, Anyhow...i love these songs so i added my recording of GALVESTON.... Hope y`all like it..:)
I've listened to this again after a while, and I had forgotten just how much the band miss Bill Berry, and I think they have too - they really are a three legged dog, as Michael once described them. This has a niave, lyrical charm that they need to get back to.
Rem never stopped writing good songs but they don't have the same charm these days.Take this eitcheta lineman cover..its got that old x factor they used to have..beauty,melody ..their music used to feel like you were getting a hug
Isn't it wierd how Stipey says "if any one of us were to leave this couch right now, we would not be REM" with Bill looking on in the background? One album later, Bill did "leave the couch" and REM have never really had the same comercial success since?
he's whistling galveston in the background too. bill was supposedly good at editing the bands material. they've been less disciplined and too far out since he left.
Yeah they have, sadly. Bill did all their arranging and when he left I think the band was kind of left in the dark in as to how to arrange their songs. He was good at working out harmonies with Mike Mills, and he also contributed the chord changes to "Everybody Hurts" and wrote "Permanent Vacation" and "Can't Get There From Here", and a couple of others I think. Out of all of them, I think Bill was the most musical.
he did not leave quite voluntarily though. he had massive health problems. during a tour, i think it was, bill had broken down with cerebral apoplexy and was forced to give up drumming and touring on that scale. had to undergo surgery and all that. so the fact that he's still around, albeit somewhat "quiet", should be cause to rejoice. although i agree - rem have never been quite the same since.
@DunderHugo It is definitely one of the best lines ever written.. "and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time, and the Wichita lineman is still one the line..... I know I need a small vacation, but it don't look like rain; and if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain.." blue collar man so much in love and so worried about working the line... yeah DunderHugo, I agree
You know they've got confidence, to try a cover like that. They did great in my opinion. I guess that's why R.E.M. has been around so long. Great groups and artist usually attempt covers, and this is a great example.
Tribute to Glen Campbell, recently diagnosed with alzheimers.

Why the hell don't they release their version of Galveston!?
I don't normally enjoy listening to REM, but his voice and the bass are really complementary.

I like it. No it's not Glen Campbell but, they do a great job in my opinion.

I wish they would have cut and released "Galveston", but I am thankful for this fragment. Their cover of Wichita Lineman is one of the best.

It say's 'Jimmy Webb covers' because Jimmy Webb wrote Galveston and Witchita Lineman so I guess they are more his songs than Glen Campbells
