for "1ndi64" : the stranglers are very talented musicians that have a broad range in styles. They have always been playing soft songs, like "strange little girl" for example... and I don't think they were trying to appear "raw". They actually beat up other bands and people in general. They was not one band out there that could say they where tougher than the Stranglers. I don't think that is necessarily cool but it's the truth. In this video they where acting soft/pop because they wanted money.

Having been impressed by the Stranglers when I was 15, I admit that nowadays I can find no rawness, let alone any hint of depth in this music. They were trying so hard to appear raw and hard but frankly it was all quite calculated. The proof: Suddenly all the rawness was gone when it was no longer en vogue.

Ok...er...coincidence in time does not 'prove' a connection, but fair comment. Personally I find cause and effect quite difficult to separate here - the Stranglers were both influenced by and influencers of (gr?) the punk movement. In a way any music is 'calculated' - this distinguishes it (sometimes barely) from noise, ol' Johann Seb almost certainly wrote his religious music 'to a template' too. Well yes and no. Of course if you have to play a song for the umphteenth time, it's difficult to preserve the appearance of spontaneity. But if I watch the Stranglers today, I can't help but think, hmmm, those blokes were not really the bad guys they tried so hard to look like. They certainly found a niche for themselves and they managed to impress the young'ins for a few years... but in retrospect it sounds just a little bit too calculated to be convincing.
