why the quotes around roots? i agree with you! his funkiness was apparent then, and even more so now. did you ever record with him down at hot licks? we may have run into each other. at any rate, he taught me alot about music. he has a gift, and we all benefit.

Ha! That's funny. I was very close with Lyle 30 years ago and played and recorded with him. His "roots" are not in R&B but rock, progressive and fusion.
