How To Change the Ram in your Notebook Computer

So I have a Dell laptop and I want to buy a higher level RAM for it. If I take my old RAMs out and put new ones in, what will I lose and what will that effect on my computer?

@PisolMan If the new ram is faster than the old ram, you will loose nothing. Nothing is stored on your RAM, so no info will be lost.

You prob have 1Gb, and each ram stick is prob 512 Mb, It is recommended that you change Both, and use the same kind (Model) in both slots.

Oh ok, well you could add more ram to the open spot, I have heard you are not SUPPOSED to put 2 different makes, and sizes of ram in at the same time, However i have done it with no problems. SO use your own discretion to remove the old ram when putting new in or not.

Although you are going to pay a LOT more than you could get out paying, The BEST way to make SURE your getting the right kind, Same Model, and Size you want, would be to order it from the company who manufactured your computer. That way they would already know, and you wouldn't need to worry with What kind to get or messing up :P

not to nitpick, but I thought I should make you aware that you shouldn't point around in your computer with metal objects. You could scratch things. Try to use something plastic if you need a pointing device.

R.A.M= Random Access Memory

It does not store anything after it has no power (electricity). Think of it as the door to the warehouse were the Hard Drive (C:) is the content and the PC or Laptop as the whole store. The bigger the door the more and bigger things you can get in or out and you will be able to do it faster. In conclusion the bigger the better. XD

no, Your ram is only Temporary memory, So it just Speeds the overall running of your computer

also when i was looking at different rams they said something like 200 pin and 240 pin...what do they mean?

Not Sure on a DV 4000, haven't delt with one like that, The Differnt Pin Count would be all about SD Ram or DD Ram, You would need to know, Im assuming that DDRam would have 240 Pins, and SDRam would have 200.

Yea, But it not recommended to mix the two, Like one is Samsung then the other needs to be a Samsung.. But i have never followed that.. LOL still no problems...

And wat does Local Disk (C:) store cuz there is this game i want to download but it is 1GB and my RAM is 1014MB and my Local Disk (C:) has 99.9GB left so i dont know if i can download it cuz i dont know where its gonna be stored on the RAM or the Local Disk (C:)?

The more RAM you have, The Faster your computer works. The Ram runs the temporary Processes. Your Hard Drive holds Downloads, Long Term Memory. So you have plenty of room for the game
