Not really, you get them in European fests and gigs too. Download (in the UK) has managed some pretty big ones. I think the cool factor is more in the atmosphere of "this is how many people we've been able to convince to run in circles because they're so junked up on alcohol and adrenaline" as opposed to the traditional moshpit-coolness.

The pits at Alpine Valley were way better. People were at least hitting each other instead of running in circles. Half the people came out with mud all over. Even the pits on the hills (quite steep hills) for Static-X and Lamb of God were better than this. Our DevilDriver pit was MASSIVE!
