  • Dawkins!

  • Thanks for posting this. What elegance and control. A master.

  • I recently discovered this aria, I have been listening to many versions, DVD is just amazing here. It takes quite a special voice to make music like this. My favorite so far.

  • 素晴らしい歌唱。グーの音もでません。

  • sublime.

  • You have put so much time, thought and tender-loving care into this video. I really appreciate the notes and the translation listed. I am glad that someone linked this recording to the Benjamin Luxon version. His is a much slower Sicilienne, but soooooo effective.

  • I've always wanted to hear DFD singing this great aria from the Matthaus Passion. Perfection. Thanks

  • Wunderschön!

  • Many thanks for posting this sublime piece.I have the recording, but it's lovely to be able to put it on a playlist of favourites. How wonderfully he sings it.Another recording I have that is worth listening to is John Eliot Gardiner 's version, perhaps my favourite at a push. Also, if you ever get the chance to see a live performance do go, I went about 18 months ago to The Festival Hall in London with the Bach Choir & good soloists, it was very moving & I'm an atheist!!

  • Thankyou, FiDiTanzer528. A beautiful presentation of Fisher-Dieskau's great singing and Bach's great composing!

  • DFD is truly a voice from another world. The emotion he awakens through his ingenious interpretation of this piece fit no words of description. Just stunning. He takes my breath away every time I hear him.

  • I've been looking for this aria by DFD for ages now. Absolutely superb singing

by one of the greatest baritones. I also like versions by Berry, Mertens and Salminen.

  • any more particulars you can provide on this recording (other singers, label, etc.) would be most appreciated. maybe I can find a copy somewhere--worth having if the rest is anything like this superb F-D rendition! thanks.

  • @bbbartolo

Hi! I responded to you privately but in case others might be interested the original recording is on DG Archiv. The singers in addition to DFD are Ernst Haefliger (evangelist and tenor arias), Irmgard Seefried (soprano), Hertha Töpper (alto) and Kieth Engen (bass) as Christ. Wonderful recording over all if you appreciate Richter's way with Bach, which I certainly do. :) It is discontinued but there are certainly copies available at various places.

  • I discovered this about 3 months ago-supreme Dieskau and Richter-I watch it most days-many,many thanks.

  • I am watching this again today on this Holy Saturday. Thank you so much for the beautiful art work.

  • 1958 was a good year for DFD. Great legato and breath support. May I suggest more Bach arias sung by DFD? Es is vollbracht, Ja, Ja, from Cantata 159, from the Cantata Arias recording from about the same year.

  • Yes, a vintage year. I have those Bach arias and may upload more someday. "Es ist vollbracht" would be great. I did upload one from that recording, "Doch weichet ihr tollen" a while ago. Thanks for the comments.

  • @mdehkram Yes! I had the original Angel recording and "Es is vollbracht" will take your breath away. Please upload it for all to hear.

  • Although I am a big DFD fan, I confess I haven't heard this performance before. Thanks.

  • You would have to have the complete Passion recording conducted by Karl Richter. This was the only time that DFD recorded the 4 bass arias. As you know he always sang the part of Christ in other recordings.

  • Great Fischer-Dieskau

  • Hmm the translation is rather... lose to say the least... is it made to fit the music or something?

  • It's an old piece, and translated from German.

  • According to the booklet with the DGG Archiv recording, the translation is from Eulenburg's Miniature Score (No. 953) with no attribution as to the translator. It is quite bad, particularly as it may make it seem as if this recitative and aria are a commentary by Joseph of Arimathea, whereas they are the reaction of the observant Christian. Wherefor: "liebe Seele, bitte du" "dear soul, ask thou" NOT "beloved servant"!!

But Fischer-Dieskau is still THE BEST! And it's great to hear it here!

  • Wunderschoen!! Exquisite!! The true German spirit.

  • Beautiful beautiful! Brava! I have looked for this on Youtube...so happy to find it. Thank you for uploading!

    David

  • This was a surprise finding this recording of DFD singing "Mache dich, mein Herze, rein". To me it is the very best of all the baritone renditions of this aria. Disekau is always superb !!!! Thanks for uploading it :-)

  • Thanks for commenting. This is the only recording in which he sings the four bass arias. He had always sung the role of Christ in the Passion as you may know. I particularly love his performance of this aria, even the recitative is so beautifully done.

  • Not only that, but the other soloists are marvelous as well. Irmgard Seefried, Soprano, Herta Toepper, Keith Engen as Jesus and above all Ernst Haefliger singing both the Evangelist and the tenor arias. This is a feat indeed! But even if this is not considered one of the historically accurate recordings, it is certainly one of the most accurate from the point of view of illustrating the subject. An absolutely towering achievement!

  • I quite agree. I'm a big admirer of Richter's Bach. No it's hot HIP but it has a power that can't be denied. Thanks for the comments.

  • Wonderful version. Can you post more from this version of Matthäus-Passion please.

  • yes,please!

  • amazing quality, subscribed!

  • I bought the Naxos version years ago, still haven´t found a singer i enjoy as much as on that one. But Naxos so poor sound quality:(

  • Magnificent, Thank you, Karen! All those modern "historicist" performances may probably be more accurate from a technical point of view (and who knows?), but none of them is more commanding, poetical, and expressive than this one. Sheer beauty. And beautiful video as well. Thanks again.

  • @Hjadlowker Genau! Das ist die Wahrheit, sicher!

  • Powerful... and a beautiful video indeed! Happy Easter Karen, and everyone :)

  • As always: a splendid video! Thank you Karen!

  • Thank you so much, Karen. Just beautiful .. I loved it all. The paintings, the music, the performance .. the voice more lovely, velvet & ingratiating than I have

ever heard it before!! So much beauty .. really incredible. Happy Easter, dear friend:)
