You have to apply with the Texas Parks and Wildlife and have never done so. Have helped squirrels, rabbits, raccoons and many birds. If you get caught there could be a fine enforced. I help the animal until they are old enough to survie on their own and help them adjust to rehoming them back to the wild. The squirrel in the video lives in a large oak tree in the front yard and allows me to get close to feed but not touch. .
You are very kind to help this little fella! Could you become a wildlife rehabilitator in order to legally keep little critters like this in your home until he can be released?
This guy was a success, but did find a lethargic squirrel this summer suffering from what appeared to be heat exhaustion. Brought him in the house and within a minute of finding him he died in my hands. Some cannot be saved, but attempt to help when I can.
I tried to save an orphaned baby squirrel not too long ago but he died of internal bleeding because he fell out of a tree and every time I see a squirrel now I suddenly feel sad
I bought goats milk at Petsmart and froze it in an ice cube tray to keep it fresh - only thaw 2 cubes at a time in a cup in the frige - goats milk can only keep 2-3 days (can will tell you how long to keep). Depending if they were scarred from the nest, nest mate killed the mom may or may not return for them. Search the following for a great website to assist just search ... animaladvocates.us/squirrelmanual.pdf
I just found 2 baby squirrels I don't know exactly how old they are but I think they are like 3 or 4 weeks. Should I take care of them or leave them in a basket near the tree?
Since they are so little they don't put up much of a fight. I shampooed mine with flea soap to get the flees off. Yours would clean as good as you can around the wound depending how serious it is... might have to contact a vet to see if they know of a wildlife rescue (most states illegal to keep them as pets). If you put Neosporne on it just make sure it leaves it alone and doesn't lick it off.
Yesterday my dog took home two 5 week old baby squirrels. Only one had puncture woundss but they are on his leg so he's okay. Online, it says to bathe the wounds and put Neosporne on it. This is a task easier said than done. How did you bathe yours?
@TheHoelicious He was running down the middle of a busy street & topped to rest in front of a lady waiting to pass on the street. Held my hand up for her to not move since she saw the squirrel run under the car. Guess he was just to tired to run anymore because I reached under and scooped him into my hands without any resistance. First thing when we got to the house was a bath since he was covered in fleas. Saved a second one this past Feb. when my dog found the nest in a shed in the backyard.
@crazyferret2 that is so nice of you i hope their where more people like you in the world around my house theirs dead cats, dogs, squirrels, raccoons, foxes and more
@ 1peiceaznboi..... I would put money on NO you did not get bitten by a rabid squirrel. They are very rarely infected with rabies and more than likely not survive the attack of the rabid animal biting them to contract rabies. Save your money on the Dr. visit, you will be fine.
Bottle fed him goats milk from a pet store.. Pets-mart. Once he was eating started with Cheerios then moved on to nuts and sunflower seeds. He was released one he was big enough to live on his own. Currently have a little girl that is 9 weeks old and she is eats sunflower and cantaloupe seeds. She sometimes ears walnuts and pecans. Attempt to feed them what I feed in the yard to the wild birds and squirrels - sunflower and nuts.
@crazyferret2 The 1 we watching is about the same age as the one in this video, I think. I would do that but we have just been feeding bacon some apples and these gerbil blocks. If you bout to say something about bacon, that would be his name cuz my brother gave it some raw turkey bacon and he's been fine. Also this is a wild squirrel, i think its been kicked out the nest cause i see other's but they don't come for it.
That's a cool name for a squirrel. The one in the video is now living free in the backyard. Last Thursday my dog found a nest and the mother wouldn't come back, so I have another baby. She is about 5 weeks old and currently enjoying the inside life. They are pretty cool little creatures.
I found one and tried to get mother to get it but I guess something happened to her. So far, 1 week, her eyes have opened and she is still on Isomil. (Soy). I have learned a lot here but it seems like I need to start giving her something solid? I am always afraid I will hurt her. I have used a dropper and she sucks it.
I caught a baby squirrel and I am curently feeding it. I looked at manuals on what to feed it. When it gets big enough and starts eating bigger foods then I am going to release him. :)
Awwww. Thats so cuteee. We just rescued a baby rabbit its brothers and sisters were being chased by a hawk. It was so sad. They all split up and one came to our gate. I was crying and saying "WE NEED TO HELP IT! PLEASE!" Now its inside and safe. Were pretty sure the hawk got 1 but the last one and the one i have are safe. Now the baby rabbit we have we named her Faithful. But we don't know what to feed it.. Its so small and it won't eat solid food. Please help.
Its not abusing them IF U KNOW WHAT U R DOING FOR ONE THING THEY HAVE TO BE KEPT WARM, OR THEY DIE, ANOTHER U FEED THEM PUPPY FORMULA, WHEN THEY R READY FOR SOLIDS FIRST GO TO GRAPES CUT IN HALF. LATER U INTRODUCE NUTS. THEN WHEN THEY R READY U RELEASE THEM, BUT DEPENDING ON THEIR DEMEANOR THEY CAN MAKE WONDERFUL PETS. FYI INCASE ANYONE FINDS A SQUIRREL. USE HOT WATERBOTTLES OR HEATING PAD UNDER CONT. AND UNDER MATERIAL TO KEEP THEM WARM, A PLASTIC CONT W/HOLES DRILLED IN IT FOR THEIR SAFETY
so i'm about 6 weeks into raising henry (my baby squirrel) and ive had him since he was abuot a week old (just a pinky) ... I'm doing what your doing and everything is going great... but he does bite a lot. Not hard at all, I kinda think he's playing but I'm guessing he's just teething.. this is normal right? I know your not a professional, but did your baby do the same??
I just found one myself, maybe an hour ago. Looks just like this one, so I guess its about 5 or 6 weeks old. The wildlife center is closed, so I guess I'm on my own for at least tonight. We're getting the Esbilac in a little while and he ate a pecan and it now curled up in my shirt. Do I have to help him go potty? Should I give him water too, or just the formula?
That is so sweet of you! I really don't have a problem with wild animals as pets as long as the person knows what they're doing. I mean, that's how we got all domestic pets at first. And squirrels as just so sweet and smart.
He is a daily visitor to the backyard feeders. He keeps his distance but still looks if I call him.... "little man". He was fun to have for a while and glad to have helped him avoid getting run over on the street.
@brigidtheirish some squirrels are mean one jumped at my brother and attacked his face for no reason he just reached and got the football we had no idea of him...i liked that squirrel he attacked my brother :D best day ever...
@phanjonathanm lol I'm sure it was funny in retrospect, but I'd be worried about an animal that attacked for no reason. It could have rabies or distemper or some such.
@brigidtheirish nope it didnt it was funny all around the reason he had to go up cuz he threw a hard ball at me and had to get it i had blood over my face
Jack rabbits were found in my dad's garden. Skunk was found as I was ridding some county backroads. The raccoon was received when a guy cut down a tree and found them, left them for the mother to return but she didn't. Wild animals are stil wild all were released back to the wild once old enough and trained to hunt for food.
He was so scared from the rain / hail / cars and strong wind he ran to me, so I picked him up and held him against my chest for the 3 miles to home. He was wet and had to be bathed because he had fleas. He is now living free somewhere near my house and still see him from time to time eating from the bird feeders.
Hey, did you end up keeping this squirrel? I found one thats about 4 wks old & I've had her for a week now & have grown to really love the little critter. If u kept her, I'd like some advise if you could. Thanks alot.
my dad had a pet flying squirrel for awhile... but that was 50 years ago almost. its cool you were able to help it out, it sounds like it will do fine it your yard. for some reason i think its face looks like a wombat...
I can't imagine anybody giving you crap for raising a baby squirrel who would have otherwise surely died. You did a very noble thing and should be commended for your kindness.
