  • It's just better when you write music altogether. So do that, please

  • for Pally

  • Steven's vocals still give me the chills and I've heard the song countless times.

  • Cool... Very nice video... good song...

  • I saw them play in Niagara this past new years. Sucked without Steve.

  • 1 guy is a cunt

  • he looks like he never had a line that set ...for real ...great band ...best song***

  • This song was featured on "Intervention" during the beginning of it's run...makes me cry.

  • This video is fucking incredible, i literally just melted. what an incredibly talented band. so original. I almost shed a tear!

  • Stephen Page, Dallas Green, Gordon Downie, Matthew Good......I think it's safe to say that Canada has the best singers in the world.

  • @M0RGANO It's safe to say anything on the internet.

  • Great album.

    They went downhill after this.

Stuff like "Old Apartment" and "One Week" were catchy, but seemed to cater to a broader audience.

Even the "funny" songs on Gordon were better. More heart.

  • Steven's voice is one of the best out there. It gives me chills. I hope he can get back with his friends and have a blast again. Love, Camille

  • A 2112 bass drum cover? That is awesome.

  • Yeah, he's on crack for sure, but he still sings better than you can!

  • One of my all time favourite BNL songs. Just saw them in concert a few weeks back and was lucky enough to have a VIP pass for backstage. Really super awesome guys, so down to earth. Great video! Thanks for posting. :o)

  • my favorite song to lisen to when i'm depressed

  • One of my favorite songs.... Love the BNL

  • They were awesome...too bad Steve had to screw things up. He will not be back. His selfish actions threatened to destroy the group. No one is going to buy children's albums from someone who is a crackhead!

  • @mrsrobinson2001 Frankly, I'm more inclined to believe that the children's album threatened to destroy the group.

  • @mrsrobinson2001: Go screw yourself. first of all, they have young kids! This was partially for them. Second of all, it got them on stage... Third of all, a lot of the songs appealed to the fans with the exact same sense of humor they have been exhibiting live for years. finally, their tour that year was phenomenal and absolutely packed in all major cities.

  • @jekst Um, what? I'm saying Steve should have been a better role model (especially since they have kids!), not that they shouldn't have tried a children's album.

  • Ouffffff.... what a voice... I got shivers all over me.

  • i like it but it sounds like some one is stepping on his neck

  • Amazing. One of my all time favorite songs.

  • A vocal masterpiece. Steve is crazy good and if this was an American band they would be so much more well known. No-one else sounds anything like them and the band is so tight. To know them, is to love them. Awesome song, awesome band, awesome vocals. Kevin's acoustic work is beyond tasty. I do think they will reunite at some point.

  • Perfection!

  • Seen them 3 times and they will never be the same if he doesn't come back!!!

  • Steve will be back. I am almost positive.

  • what a voice and what a song! i heard this years ago and it just popped into my head! i couldnt remember the name it took ages to find but well worth it! awsome!

  • 4:08 that fun little guitar riff- really cool! and not on the studio version?

This is really great, thanks to whoever put it up

  • "One temptation causes me to slip away"....we'll miss ya steve

  • "When tempation calls, we just look away..."

  • I totally agree :(

    Such a unique gifted voice...

but i still will always love BNL <3

    thank u for sharing! amazing

  • I gotta say that as much as Kevin Hearn has done a good job singing to make up for Steven's absence from the band, no one can replace his unique voice, escpecially with this song and Brian Wilson

  • This is so good that I'm disappointed in myself for not realizing just how good these guys were earlier. Steven's soulful vocals are outrageous and the song is stunning. I will never be caught off guard by anything the BNL do again. I hope they're intact, because while I know the other vocalist is very good, I can't imagine this band without Steven.

  • 'cause it won't take much for me

To show my life ain't over yet.

  • awesome song

  • wow

  • One of my favorite songs. Powerful, touching . . . . brilliant. Ed does do a nice version, too, but Steve gives me goosebumps.

  • Such a shame that Steven Page felt pressured to leave this band. They will not be the same without him. Living in Canada, this band was a rite of passage during my university days in the 90s.

  • @JenInTO I'm sure Steven will be back.

  • @sgtpepper1138 it would be sweet as hell to hear that he was coming back. no offence to the other guys but steve was way too much of bnl as this vid shows

  • what a goood song, what a good band!!!! and awesomely performed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tanks fot that greatttt add!!! flaged for sure!

  • If you flag a video it means you reported it for being innapropriate.

  • u iz dumb

  • Hair shirt is an old term, describing a shirt made of animal hair, that was very uncomfortable to wear. it was wore by people as a way of self-punishment, as a way of asking god for forgiveness. Kind of like whipping yourself to repent for your sins (like the blond dude from the davinci code). whether the song is about losing "it" or not, I don't know, but that's what a hair shirt is.

  • A hairshirt is a shirt made out of hair and worn as an act of repentence and atonement. He is talking about being sorry about messing up his relationship. At least that's my understanding.

  • i always thought it seemed to be a song about gender roles and sexuality. But there also are alot of points that could go towards the homosexual. keatingpiers also makes a good point my friend felt the same way. so cryptic BNL!

  • Lol @ Rush Bass Drum

  • Steven Page has said this song is about the struggles of homosexuals in an unaccepting world. This song is great.

  • I've never thought that. It was Ed who wrote it anyway I believe.

  • No Page wrote this. Look it up. This is definately his writing style.

  • well i don't know where your looking, but ed wrote the song. Watch this video "What a Good Boy: Ed from The Barenaked Ladies @ BMSC", he says he wrote it after he's finished playing it.

  • I just looked it up; words by Steve, music by Steve and Ed. Ed's full of it, as usual.

  • I love this song. Great lyrics.

  • steve page looks unusually stylish / rugged here. he should stick with it! love BNL!

  • really a shame, drugs,,takes another band, been there, done that, lived through it,hurts to see great musiciabs let the drugs burn-em

  • Really? How so?

  • A wonderful live rendition of a very touching song. Thanks for the share!

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Excellent song. Can somebody explain the reference to her name being the "hairshirt" he wears?

  • A hairshirt is a shirt made of coarse animal fibers and has historically been used as a means of repentance (because it's uncomfortable). Notice the religious tones as in the chorus he mentions a 'cross that I bear' -- both are allusions to Christianity.

  • Aha, I get it now. Thank you very much

  • Dude, did you hear anything about this song being about transgenders? It would make sense wouldn't it--"pretty girl...strong boy"? Also, couldn't it be taken a step further to speak for all of us?

  • The comment right above yours indicates that the song was written with homosexuals in mind and struggles in acceptance. However, it could be viewed in a broader sense of societal expectations on people from the moment they're born and how that come, at times, feel restricting and overwhelming. You don't have to be gay to feel these pressures. One's family might have high expectations for you to succeed and become a doctor which can feel restrictive if you want to be an artist, for instance.

  • Good thoughts man, good thoughts.

  • on their dvd, it says that this video is from Toronto or something. not sure, but i know it was in canada.

am i right? correct me if im wrong, but i don't think that this was in NY.

whatever, this song is amazing, steve is too.

  • Yes, it was NYC, you can see the Guinness sign right there. It was a special show sponsored by them. I remember seeing this too, there was an amazing version of Break Your Heart in it too.

  • I think he(Page) will get his act together and they'll have reunion tour. They need to be together.

  • a great song, even better when you factor in that he involved the word hairshirt, not exactly common dialect

  • How is BNL going to perform this and all the other Steve Page songs now that he has left the group?? Ed has a different style (more country-rockish) and I just can't see him singing lead. Does this mean Steve took all of these songs with him?

It's almost like Lennon and McCartney, if you know what I mean. I wish the band the best. 20 years was a long time for them to perform together.

  • Great song guys well played :)

  • Very underrated song... amazing lyrics, amazing tune and the voice is perfect for the song!!

  • Beautiful song.

  • This song is great so deep and enveloped in real emotion

  • great song for karaoke if you have the voice for it! Pure emotion and their best all time song!

  • yeah, not exactly an easy song to sing well

  • I was thinking the same. Did you find a karaoke version (no vocal track)? I'd really love to try it!

  • No not yet! Probably to rare a song for karaoke. Seeing the post Steven Page group tonight. Won't hear this song again, sad!!!

  • i listen to this song everyday .. it is beautiful .. and so, so real

  • i absolutaly loveeeee this song.... it realtes so much to me, this was the band that i grew up listening to, and still growing up with

  • is there a human alive who can't see? why we wake up scared? genius.

  • this song blew me away!

just pure talent, unbelivably monumental track

    one of thier best songs

  • FANFUCKINTASTIC

  • This song is so much better at this tempo. In the studio version, it just seams rushed. This is perfect for a ballad. Great lyrics, amazing melody, and I love Steven Page's voice.

  • SO this song is a good wedding song

there was a board saying this wouldn't be a good wedding song

  • My wife and I met in sobrity. Our families treated us like we had chains of our past on us. I just want to be with my wife forever. And we both know that we're not perfect.

  • This was my wife's & My first dance at our wedding.
