One of my all time favourite BNL songs. Just saw them in concert a few weeks back and was lucky enough to have a VIP pass for backstage. Really super awesome guys, so down to earth. Great video! Thanks for posting. :o)
They were awesome...too bad Steve had to screw things up. He will not be back. His selfish actions threatened to destroy the group. No one is going to buy children's albums from someone who is a crackhead!
@mrsrobinson2001: Go screw yourself. first of all, they have young kids! This was partially for them. Second of all, it got them on stage... Third of all, a lot of the songs appealed to the fans with the exact same sense of humor they have been exhibiting live for years. finally, their tour that year was phenomenal and absolutely packed in all major cities.
@jekst Um, what? I'm saying Steve should have been a better role model (especially since they have kids!), not that they shouldn't have tried a children's album.
A vocal masterpiece. Steve is crazy good and if this was an American band they would be so much more well known. No-one else sounds anything like them and the band is so tight. To know them, is to love them. Awesome song, awesome band, awesome vocals. Kevin's acoustic work is beyond tasty. I do think they will reunite at some point.
what a voice and what a song! i heard this years ago and it just popped into my head! i couldnt remember the name it took ages to find but well worth it! awsome!
I gotta say that as much as Kevin Hearn has done a good job singing to make up for Steven's absence from the band, no one can replace his unique voice, escpecially with this song and Brian Wilson
This is so good that I'm disappointed in myself for not realizing just how good these guys were earlier. Steven's soulful vocals are outrageous and the song is stunning. I will never be caught off guard by anything the BNL do again. I hope they're intact, because while I know the other vocalist is very good, I can't imagine this band without Steven.
Such a shame that Steven Page felt pressured to leave this band. They will not be the same without him. Living in Canada, this band was a rite of passage during my university days in the 90s.
@sgtpepper1138 it would be sweet as hell to hear that he was coming back. no offence to the other guys but steve was way too much of bnl as this vid shows

Along the lines of many of their songs, this song is about being a teenager, trying to get himself laid. He is pleading with his girl to give in to the temptation and give up her virginity. "Hairshirt" is the sexual label(virgin) that his friends have put on him.
Hair shirt is an old term, describing a shirt made of animal hair, that was very uncomfortable to wear. it was wore by people as a way of self-punishment, as a way of asking god for forgiveness. Kind of like whipping yourself to repent for your sins (like the blond dude from the davinci code). whether the song is about losing "it" or not, I don't know, but that's what a hair shirt is.
A hairshirt is a shirt made out of hair and worn as an act of repentence and atonement. He is talking about being sorry about messing up his relationship. At least that's my understanding.
i always thought it seemed to be a song about gender roles and sexuality. But there also are alot of points that could go towards the homosexual. keatingpiers also makes a good point my friend felt the same way. so cryptic BNL!
well i don't know where your looking, but ed wrote the song. Watch this video "What a Good Boy: Ed from The Barenaked Ladies @ BMSC", he says he wrote it after he's finished playing it.
A hairshirt is a shirt made of coarse animal fibers and has historically been used as a means of repentance (because it's uncomfortable). Notice the religious tones as in the chorus he mentions a 'cross that I bear' -- both are allusions to Christianity.
Dude, did you hear anything about this song being about transgenders? It would make sense wouldn't it--"pretty girl...strong boy"? Also, couldn't it be taken a step further to speak for all of us?
The comment right above yours indicates that the song was written with homosexuals in mind and struggles in acceptance. However, it could be viewed in a broader sense of societal expectations on people from the moment they're born and how that come, at times, feel restricting and overwhelming. You don't have to be gay to feel these pressures. One's family might have high expectations for you to succeed and become a doctor which can feel restrictive if you want to be an artist, for instance.
Yes, it was NYC, you can see the Guinness sign right there. It was a special show sponsored by them. I remember seeing this too, there was an amazing version of Break Your Heart in it too.
How is BNL going to perform this and all the other Steve Page songs now that he has left the group?? Ed has a different style (more country-rockish) and I just can't see him singing lead. Does this mean Steve took all of these songs with him?
It's almost like Lennon and McCartney, if you know what I mean. I wish the band the best. 20 years was a long time for them to perform together.
This song is so much better at this tempo. In the studio version, it just seams rushed. This is perfect for a ballad. Great lyrics, amazing melody, and I love Steven Page's voice.
My wife and I met in sobrity. Our families treated us like we had chains of our past on us. I just want to be with my wife forever. And we both know that we're not perfect.
It's just better when you write music altogether. So do that, please

Great album.
They went downhill after this.
Stuff like "Old Apartment" and "One Week" were catchy, but seemed to cater to a broader audience.
Even the "funny" songs on Gordon were better. More heart.
