Gander was indeed a star during the horrible time - but let's remember all the other Canadian cities where the locals swarmed the airports looking for "the stranded plane people" to take into their homes! At Pearson International Airport, they were turning people away - "We have homes for everyone! We don't need any more volunteers!"
Newfoundland makes me SO proud to be a Canadian!!! I know there were other Canadian towns and airports, who did the same thing, as Gander. Not just being good hosts, but the fact that our country, "bit the bullet", and took the chance, that there were more terrorists, but we landed them anyway!
It was a little hard to take the initial criticism, that those bad guys came from Canada, when, really, they came from the States, internally, and , we ONLY accepted flights that would have been shot down, had they tried to reach their destinations. Canada had big shoulders on this count! I'm SO proud of my country! No one could have known there were no more terrorists, but we took those planes anyway!
Canucks are briliant for their humanity and generosity, I'll be thinking of you on Sunday and not your interminably whinging southern neighbours. Happy trails.
THANK YOU to all of Canada for your compassion and hospitality, you are truly great friends and we will always stand by you! My uncle from NYC was rerouted to BC that day and says that the love and concern showed to him by his Canadian hosts helped him greatly to get through this terrible tragedy.
Did she say, that this only came to light at the Vancouver Olympics?? That happened on Sept. 11 th 01. How is it possible, that a story like that only "comes to light" 9 years later??!! Those Newfies make me SOOO proud! My city also landed a few "unexpected " planes that day. We accomodated them., but we have 75,000 people. Not like Gander. We were GLAD to help! as I'm sure the Ganderites were!!
Its simple why it was talked about sooner, only time Canada makes the US Media is when something happens like the Vancouver riots or the Royals visit. For the most part Canada is not important to the average US citizen. Even though a lot of natural resources from here is sent to the US.
Nice video. Did you do this as part of a school project? I am a from Gander. It was amazing to here the response from people who saw the Tom Browkaw story. I will show our Mayor your video. Thanks for posting.

On the 10th anniversary of the terrorism that touched America, I can't say America has grown, or is better.
The world, is more attuned and heightened to terrorism, and occasionally fails.
America though, has become a stinking cesspool of hatred and disease.
Maybe I should dial that back a bit.
30% of Americans live in a stinking cesspool of hatred and disease.
Make up time:
A deity that doesn't exist honours you and wants you to have a good life if you live in America.
God Bless America

It isn't that we forget from time to time, it's because we remember day to day.
Thank you Gander, Thank you Newfoundland.
