@psycomustang What happened to positive rap? Apparently, Julian Temple set it on fire, covered it with red ants and poisoned it with toxic mercury fumes...
If this is how directors treat the GOOD rap artists, then it's no wonder all the new sucky rappers all film their videos in a strip club!
radio play is whats makin these new wack guys so damn popular...like whack ass lil wayne for ex...but this old skool stuff is so mellow and classic man......GROOVY!!!!!
@Zanders115thDream Me Phi Me was awsome when they dropped....this jam was all over the radio...the ghetto boys were not played as much as this was. Nuff said.
@Zanders115thDream I dont know where youre from, but PLENTY of people have radios where I'm from...and MILLIONS listen every day.....let me guess, youre Canadian?
@PopCulture20 Would you care to elaborate on that comment? So I grew up in a ghetto and for that reason, and for that reason only I'm missing the greatness of this masterpiece? Fact remains, wether you grow up in a ghetto, a mansion or, like in your case, on a circus, shitty music will always be shitty music.
@playmobilzurdo LIKE I SAID, you only identify with ghetto shit like Nick Minaj, Soulja Boy & Lil Wayne so what do you expect from a moron that's emerged with that kinda music? You nothing but a following sheep
I pulled out my cassette version of the album "One" today and came here to see if any of the songs were downloaded. It seems this is the only one. Thanks. This is a great example of what rap and hip-hop should have and could have been.
You know it has been years until I could finally see this video and hear this song. I lost contact with the girl who danced on the ball during the guitar solo. Anyone seen her? Her name is Julia Snyder. She was truly a good friend to me during some tough times. Time and space separated us and I hope she is well.
I bought this cassette. I may have to reinvest in a digital copy. I used to quote his "And hope is a pleasant thing", but no one knew what I was referring. That's how it goes sometimes. NIce acoustic guitar lick at the end, too.
i remember this song but Put sha hands to gether is better i remember he performed that on soul train he was also labeled as the first gay rapper in that time period but the song is cool to me cant find the other song on you tube though says uzipolo king of decatur
This was a great song. I got the CD single from my college's radio station after it was out of rotation. There was a LOT of different things going on in hip-hop at the time. From the Arrested Development, De La Soul and Me Phi Me "educated" bands to the mathematical styles of Fu Schnickens and Das Efx, to the beginnings of Gangsta. Innovation comes and goes, every so often there are periods of garbage. I find it funny that the current trend is the dance club music of 10 years ago.
I don't know what the fuck it is about this song. I love it so much, but when I was a teen and saw this shit on YO MTV RAPS it just didn't feel right to my close minded self.
But after all these years I still love it and its just one of those songs that randomly pop into my head sometimes.
This one takes me back to high school. I use to listen to this tape (and this song) all the time. This song helped in some hard times. Seeing this makes me want to get another copy... on CD this time.
I believe he's your Stepdad! You wouldn't say if it wasn't true. I don't htink he did this cut for stardom. He is in my opinion a Poet with a message. The concept! was dead on!
Try the yellow and red sign forgot the name! The sell everything! Bought the tape back in 93. The album sucked except for this joint. Try Napster for this cut only
Chris Cuben-Tatum aka Me Phi Me was the first rapper other than Kool Moe Dee that had something to say other than the usual stuff you hear in this genre of music. Everyone else was busy perpetuating and reinforcing negative stereotypes about young black males. This guy was really talented. I have this CD. I don't think there's a single curse word on any cut on it.
Unfortunately, the bottom line with record companies is moving CD's off the shelves of record stores. Vulgar stuff sold more.
I'm not as knowledgeable about rap as you obviously. Those two were the first two that caught my attention and came over as positive.I was not then, and still am not today, a fan of the genre called rap. So forgive me for my lack of knowledge on the subject. I can only speak of and draw from what I know and have heard.
I can't remember the exact name of the track, but i think it was something like "Not My Brother". That's the only track I remember having a curse word on it. Used to listen to this tape non-stop.
i remember back in da day When they played this on Hot 97 in NYC. Jeff Thomas goes " This is Flint Michigan's own Me Phi Me, It's a sad new day get hot". Then you hear "Pain it's as dark as the night". I had this recorded on tape, that's why I remember it so well. I love this song so much.
Me Phi Me fills my soul. Get into the Me Phi Me, and leave the others behind! Wake up world, get into the black & red, and you will not be dead. We need more from Me Phi Me, keep it coming, we will follow your love.
I first heard this in '93. I was pregnant and miserable. They had this on tape at my job and I had to listen to it every morning to try to start my day off positive. AND THAT WAS THE INSTRUMENTAL VERSION. When I bought the CD and found out it had words, I was THAT MUCH MORE IMPRESSED. So what it doesn't flow like your popcorn rap. Think of it as POSITIVE SPOKEN WORD, shut up, and listen!

I don't agree! Kool Moe Dee and Me Phi Me were only two of lotsa act back in the day. In those days there were lots of varity in hip hop.
Me Phi Me came out in 1992
Arrested Development also came out in 1992.
Public Enemy came out in 1987
Gangstarr came out with Jazz Thing in 1990, first blending Jazz in to hip hop.
Stetsasonic came out with 1988 as the first hiphop band.
Hen G and Evil E came out with Hermana Tan Linda in 1991 with full Salsa Orchestra and partly in Spanish.
