What strings ya using fellow cellist? I use Spirocores on the bottom strings and Larson(I don't know if they are solos or not) on A and D. Do I see a Larson D string and a Jargar A with spirocores on the bottom? :)
However, as a cellist studying this piece, I noticed that you made a lot more shifts than "necessary," especially near the beginning. Is there any reason why?
@silvr94 You do make a very good point. Many times I would make extra shifts and use alternate strings to alter the timbre, but it just seemed at the time of me watching this video (compared to my own cello, at least) that you were making about 5 shifts for every 3 I made.
i just love this piece. i love the bitter mellow regretful sorrow opening and then at the climax it explodes into a rage, like as if pouring out all its grudge and complains and dies down later in vain. its just so full of drama.
Cello is such a beautiful instrument, your videos are an inspiration for me to continue practice the cello!! so one day i will be able to play this beautiful!
Well I'll say I still like J.L. Webber's interpretation more, but that was also an amazaing job...I won't be able to play like this for quite a long time.
Amazing work, very well played, and the most beautiful part is that you guys felt the piece. I am not an expert, but I know when music is being felt rather than just played. Well done!
how mant episodes do you have so far? i think you guys should play the (i think it's?bach. look up the film "the soloist" (it's coming out soon) it's a beutiful piece. BTW, i love this piece, makes my heart melt. you are a beaitful cellist. tops for the pianist as well!
I notice that you and i have the same bow hand. my private instructor is constantly trying to fix mine, but i'm having a hard time with it. but now seeing that a great cellist like yourself is using the same bow hand, i'm confused as to what's wrong with it =[
Well I'm no cellist, but I do play classical guitar and study classical voice. A lot of the time we learned to do those things on our own without finding a true basic platform to build off of. In classical guitar we are taught to be almost robotic and as we rise in playing, we can be more expressive. Sometimes being too expressive without any basic foundation can lead to bad habits and mistakes. I hope this makes sense.
amazzing but bro you neeeeeddd more vibrato... it just adds so mch more feeling when you go up in volume.. dynamics become just that much more amazing :) bieng a cello player i am intrested in your videos :D
i agree, great intonation and dynamics but the piece is so passionate it calls for just a bit more vibrato. more width. this too close to my violin vibrato at times.
hehe, I played along with my flute. It ties in nicely with a lot of your pieces. It sounds wonderful with a piano and cello. Its a nice top note harmony. :) You guys rock the classical! lol.
this is yattadane/rikufan14 i got the music for this and played it all perfectly except the 32nd triples and runs, but it just comes with practice like anything i suppose.
I really need to post a video and send it to you of me playing it when i get it up to where i want it. I;m really picky so it might be a while, anyway whats coming up in the future? The Dvorak cello concerto perhaps?
I have to agree with iceangel32992, i am not a professional cellist, but next year i hope i'll be able to play the elegie, its one of the best pieces ever wroten for cello and piano, i must say that you express perfectly (in my opinion) every part of the song and i thing that this is what is music for, to express our feelings with a better way.
Fantastic interpretation. You did a terrific job, considering how difficult it is for most cellists, including myself, to play at this tempo, and also because of the unusual key signature.
My first piece that I thought I played with real emotion; it's been two years and I keep on picking it up. It's amazing, and both accompanist and cellist did an excellent job. Lots of emotion and awesome vibrato on the cello part.
I really like the Cello Journey because it has a very simple camera angle, It lets you really see whats going on, So its good to watch if you are just starting the piece.
hey thank you very much for you work publicizing great cello pieces. you play very well. I have been playing cello ten years and i have never heard a better representation of the elegie in my life keep up the great work
I loved this you make it look so easy! My personal preference is to make the end longer, hold the notes out some more, but you did a very good job of not doing that and still making it sound amazing! :) great work.
Enjoyed the sound of you performance. Noticed that in technique, when you move your head around like Du Pre, your bow goes at angles that might not be optimal. I think if you move your head right and turn your neck down at the same time, the motion will compensate and not affect the other parts of the body, and you'll be able to watch the bow a bit as well.
Well done! I played this piece aswell but unfortunately I have not played my cello for quite some time. Cello journey has made me realise that I should play again. This instrument is so beautiful and you play it beautifully! Thank you!!
this is so good - and the piano accompaniment is better than the orchestral version!! im playing this piece now and im using your performance as a source of inspiration! thanks!
you play so well! and that's my favorite cello piece too. but why is it that when i put it on myspace that the quality isn't as good as the one right now?
I'm also working on this peice. Beautiful interpretation, I loved the contrast. A great quality in a cellist is being able to add all of those different colours in a peice. Bravo. Nailed it.
I think people overdo vibrato, confusing it with expression. I like your amount just fine.

@aseretkavon well i find that certain strings and areas on the string sound different than others. each cello is individual.

Nice job... I would prefer a much wider, "juicier" vibrato for this piece though.
