Agreed. Learn the way, then find your own way. That's what we see here. People like Asai Sensei and Kanazawa Sensei have reached a level where they can make their own kata, therefore helping karate progress. What i noticed about the kata they both make is the heavy use of crane stance. Interesting how in shotokan the crane stance is an advanced, but it's one of the first stances you learn in Okinawan-based styles. Always good to compare differences b/w arts.
