  • This is the most appropriate version of this song that I've ever heard. Stunningly beautiful singing and wonderful accompaniment. Bravo Thomas!

  • How absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much for uploading this beautiful song ;)

  • I love this Forster's song since I was a little boy, and have never stop loving this song since.

  • Stephen Foster probably the most unvalued American Composer, brought to life by Thomas Hampson. Bravo!

  • For me, this is how the song should be sung, simple and lyrical with accompaniment in kind. A baritone beautifully singing tenor note lines is one of the most lovely sounds in singing, and this song lends itself strongly to this. I have to believe this is how Stephen Foster heard it in his head when he composed it. By far my favorite Foster song. Bravo Mr. Hampson.

  • Oh gosh... and with guitar accompaniment? Just melting. Like a real serenade. Thank you SOOO much for posting.... I'm in love with the voice... sigh.

  • Love the vocal. Don't like the accompaniment. But, beautiful, tender vocal.

  • Thomas Hampson is the best!

  • His name is Thomas Hampson. He is best!

  • The mandolin is perfect accompaniment for this song. Well done.

  • Delightfully talented Thomas! I am willing to bet that Stephn Foster let out a deep sigh of joy when he heard this! BRAVO!!!!!!!!

  • 確かフォスターの作品でしたね。貧しかった頃を思い出します。でも、とても心豊かな気持ちになります。今の高校生は知っているのでしょうか。

  • Thomas Hampson's repertoire is vast!

  • Mr. Hampson, we love you!

  • I always get choked up when I hear this song, and FINALLY I found this version. I like hearing Bing Crosby sing it, but I've never heard of Thomas Hapson until now.

  • Fantastic! Absolutely a gorgeous rendition of this song. Thanks for sharing.

  • Bravo !!!!

  • BRAVO!

Beutiful diction and phrasing BUT natural sound...

this sounds easy but its very difficult for an such well trained singer....

    BRAVO THOMAS HAMPSON!

He is one of the last real artists in this awful musicindustry!

  • Oh, please...let him not be the last! Cheers to new young artists, as yet unknown! But yes...Mr. Hampson is superb. Just saw him at LA Opera this weekend. Ahhhhhh......

  • Excellent!! Very intelligent rendition not using the opera-voice.

  • Tommy can you hear me? You're awesome and I love you.

  • Hermosa interpretación de este gran barítono de esta bellísima canción de Foster. ¿Alguien tendría y podría subir la versión de Robert Merrill de esta misma melodía?. Les aseguro que es extraordinaria.

  • Just got "Long Time Ago" and wondered how he'd perform Stephen Foster. Voila! Meltingly beautiful!

  • I just saw him this weekend at LA Opera. I got his "American Dreamer" Stephen Foster cd....beautiful. His "Hard Times" makes me weep. What a lovely phrase you use..."meltingly beautiful." Nicely said, and...I so agree.

  • Tomkellycartoons,

tell us something more about this concert!!

  • Sorry, Chiara...ran out of room! His whole demeanor is so expressive. A full human being. Witty, warm, and of course, that golden voice. There are two (so far) cds from his American collection. I got #2 (Wondrous Free). When I return, I'll get the other. I also got his Stephen Foster cd. Heavenly. Thanks for asking. I've been singing "Hard Times" since the concert, and can't stop! (not that I sing like he does!).

  • Wonderful! :)

  • Thanks for posting this, I think this is a lovely rendition and the only version I had of it was unfortunately only in mono, so listening in glorious stereo is a treat!

  • great song and a great voice
