In one of Maya Angelou's books she describes a scene from her real life while traveling with a dramatic troupe in Europe. On the train some of them were singing and she used these words to describe the voices "it was like hot silver being poured from a high place" ... this is exactly what this song reminds me of! Beauitful!
I'd seen this movie before but it has been on my mind for some reason.
I checked out this clip, decided to rent the DVD, after I returned the video I came back and watched this and other clips over and over until I just decided to buy the DVD on Amazon.
Now I own the DVD but still like to watch these clips on YouTube.
Online sharing can be a good thing for the studios.

@papermermaid this song is a old negro hymnal about when the blacks were slaves and how they submitted to servitude to not get beaten or killed and how Jesus and faith told them not to let that happen. To keep the fight no matter what. In the movie, this is what DJay feels. No matter what...keep the fight, and let no one tear you down.
I guess it is because I am a student of music that I do not like this work. i tried to, but I don't understand it. Someone explain it to me so I can understand the context.
@papermermaid what i got from it was..even though he was a pimp...by choice...there comes a time when we all think, remember, our pasts and hurts..even though that wasn't said in the movie....so if jesus changed his name...literally but to be taken metaphorically...he would be different or a better person
@papermermaid what does you, being a student of music have to do with anything when it's beautiful music?you simply don't like Jesus, and are trying to bait someone into your false concepts of how Christianity was used to suppress blacks.facts are, the slaves were forbidden to read the Bible especially, because the slavers knew that it was all about freedom and liberty, serving God and not man, condemning of oppression and menstealing, etc. The slaves knew this and used it for their liberation.
1. I listen and study music as required to perform well. I'm a violinist, so it would stand to reason that I have listened to amazing music. 2. Atheists can make and be moved by mythological music all of the time. Mozart had some beautiful music is is based around Israeli mythology (Lacrimosa), Beethoven ode to joy ...the list continues. 3. Just a literature point - It seems you have never read the bible. Christian mythology and superstition is still killing around the world.
They used the bible to justify slavery. The bible tells you haw to beat your slave and how to teat them. The new testament even instructs slaves the 'Listen to their master'. You really need to brush up on your mythology. I was sent here by a friend because she is a singer and thought I would like this song. I didn/t understand it. That/s all. Mythological work can still be good work, no matter how wrong the superstition is.
@papermermaid again, there was nothing to "not understand". the devil in you is revolted at the mention of that worthy Name. What a tired, old, nonsensical claim that the Bible promotes slavery. These were either indentured servants who sold themselves as property of captives of the the heathen nations, in the old covenant, who were to happy they were not killed, yet bore the judgement of slavery which was a mercy unto them. they were commanded to be freed with money every 7 years.
I am not revolted by Jesus as much as I am revolted by fairies, unicorns, and mermaids. He is just mythology.
I love a lot of mythological music. Most of classical music is based on the christian myth. I absolutely love classical music. I love christian mythological art work. The Sistine Chapel. I would love to look at the Vatican, and in the same respect I would love to see the Parthenon, or the pyramids
Note: Slavery is never mercy. Rape is never mercy. Murder is not mercy
@papermermaid so, at best they were to have seven years of godly influence and then released in a better state. this is not at all to rightly justify the kidnapping and or oppression of men, forbidden in the Bible. only when the children of Israel (who were in a theocracy, guided by the Lord Himself), were commanded to be the hand of the Lord, in judgment, to kill or enslave, was it right to do so. the avaricious imperialistic conquest of the European fake Christians had no Biblical backing.
Godly influence? It was slavery! Sexual slavery was written in the bible as okay. The bible gave instructions on how to enslave and rape virgins, girls (to pay for debt), and other people. Slavery, rape, and genocide were okay , that is because it was okay back when this book was written. Since then our morality has evolved enough so that we know that it isn't okay to rape as a war measure, or to enslave our daughters into sexual servitude to pay our debts. Use your reason.
Slavery was never forbidden in the bible. Moses enslaved the people of the land he was leading his people to. If you can tell me where it says that you are not allowed to enslave people I will stand down on this issue. However I have ready the book. Thus your arguments are wrong. But please correct me.
This is why the ushers pass out tissues at my church. This is spirit of God is real and some ppl respond by crying. God uses music to stir the souls of his children.
I am totally against religion in all forms, but there is absolutely no denying the soul and emotion in this woman singing this song so beautifully. If it doesn't move you, you have no pulse. Magnificent.
@dakari09 in the movie dj gets pissed every time someone says his name the wrong way the way he demands his respect a pimp does come in many forms but always demands his respect. how i feel is they put this song in the movie because shit in the movie dj really dont appreciate anyone who says his name wrong after this part of the movie you can tell he takes the lords word to heart and is out in his streets doing what he has to by ne means
My God this is so beautiful that I almost can't take it. I agree with Poetshine..I have look EVERYWHERE for this...the only place I have been able to find it is on Youtube. They have a valuable diamond in this song and don't even know it!!....How dare you not release this as a single....How can you not recognize is beauty and power...how foolish they are.
Theres no way to describe this song sung by this soulful sister. Her voice pulls at ur heart and makes u cry. Its like u can feel the pain urself. Love it love it love it!
This song can bring tears to your eyes. The meaning behind it is incredible. Its been on repeat for 24 hours. I feel like it has altered my life in an even better direction.
To have the ability to belt it out like that... I don't care who you are, if any type of sound can give you the chills ( muscle car, steer bike, bass rattling , a country twang ) this lady has to have given you the chills .
I remember the first time I saw this movie, and this scene came on after the pot deal at the corner store. this scene was unexpected. suddenly I was listening to the most beautiful voice I had ever heard in my life singing those words....and a tear began to roll down my face. at that very instant they cut to him with a tear rolling down his face. it was an amazing moment for me....transcendent, much like her voice is transcendent.
I now own the dvd and to this day I tear up every single time.
'' Jesus told me..that the world would be against me if he changed ny name''... WOW...all i can say is that this is so true! when one becomes a christian he is hated by the world...by the secularists, the liberals, the atheists and peoples of other religions like islam.
@Tillerspoke look all im saying is that the level of hatred towards christians is higher and of a distinctive nature....tell me what happens to a muslim person who converts to chistianity?? DEATH PENALTY...look at all the deep hatred that people have for jesus here on youtube...its so obvious... 'if the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. No servant is greater than his master, if they hated me so shall they hate you'
@shamvara this song is a "spiritual". spirituals are songs that slaves would sing when laboring or worshipping giving them a sense of connection and community when given very little opportunity to do so.
the lyrics are referring to slaves that had their names replaced with the names of their masters.
no matter what was done to them, they still had their connection with Christ, which gave them inner strength to counteract the hopelessness of their situation.
@dunkafelic ah. Okay I understand. (S/N their connection with Christ was beaten into them because according to the bible it is okay to have slave. that is why so many of them wanted to remain slaves.
Meaning I told Jesus it would be alright if I have to take on new responsibilities and if I am confronted with worldly challenges because I decided to become a Christian, to be use by him. To Die to Self. TO GO HUNGRY IF NECESSARY AND ITS OK IF THE WORLD HATES ME. POWERFUL.
I finally saw "Hustle and Flow" last night. This song just slapped me in the face and made me cry (power of the Holy Spirit??!!). Why did they leave the absolute BEST song off the soundtrack and leave all the "Pimp" songs on?
This is why I like too sing. I want to achieve what she has. The power to make you cry at something so beautiful that it just silences you. You can't help but cry too.
